Yeah, they suck ***, but unfortunately, that's called "rock," isn't it?

This new rock is complete crap. There's the one band that did the cover of "Careless Whisper," for one. I've never liked Nickleback, but their new song "You look cuter with something in your mouth" or whatever has taken it to a new level. If you're over about 16 and you like that stuff, you have a problem.

I like "Steal My Sunshine" and the video's OK, but the big drawback in the video is the male singer wearing the Yankee cap. Backwards, no less.

And I don't think, in the history of pop, there has been a song more sucky than this:

Oh, forgot about this one. "Telephone Man" by Meri Wilson.

I went to my apartment on a Monday at one
A-singin' do lolly, lolly shicky bum, shicky bum
Started movin' in it on a Tuesday at two
A-singin' do lolly, lolly shicky do, shicky do
Wednesday at three I called the phone company, singin':
"Hey baby, put a phone in for me"
Thursday at four he came a-knockin' at my door, singin':

"Hey, baby, I'm your telephone man
You just show me where you want it and I'll put it where I can
I can put it in the bedroom, I can put it in the hall
I can put it in the bathroom, I can hang it on the wall
You can have it with a buzz, you can have it with a ring
And if you really want it you can have a ding-a-ling
Because-a hey baby, I'm your telephone man"

Can you believe that? And then he says:

"Now when other fellas call ya tell 'em how it all began"

Well...can you imagine?

My heart began a-thumpin' and my mind began to fly
And I knew I wasn't dealin' with no ordinary guy
So while he was a-talking I was thinkin' up my plan
Then my fingers did the walkin' on the telephone man

Singin' hey lolly, lolly
Hey lolly, lolly
Hey lolly, lolly
Get it any way you can
Right? Ha ha ha, so...

I got it in the bedroom, and I got it in the hall
And I got it in the bathroom, and he hung it on the wall
I got it with a buzz, and I got it with a ring
And when he told me what my number was I got a ding-a-ling

A-singin' hey lolly, lolly
Hey lolly, lolly
Hey lolly, lolly
Just-a doin' my thing

Ha, ha...I've never done anything like this before!

LFO Summer Girls worst lyrics evar

Yeah...I like it when the girls stop by.. In the summer
Do you remember, Do you remember?
...when we met..That summer??

[Chorus:]
New Kids On The block, had a bunch of hits
Chinese food makes me sick.
And I think it's fly when girls stop by for the summer, for the summer
I like girls that wear Abercrombie and Fitch,
I'd take her if I had one wish,
But she's been gone since that summer..
Since that summer

[Verse 1:]
Hip Hop Marmalade spic And span,
Met you one summer and it all began
You're the best girl that I ever did see,
The great Larry Bird Jersey 33
When you take a sip you buzz like a hornet
Billy Shakespeare wrote a whole bunch of sonnets
Call me Willy Whistle cause I can't speak baby
Something in your eyes went and drove me crazy
Now I can't forget you and it makes me mad,
Left one day and never came back
Stayed all summer then went back home,
Macauly Culkin wasn't Home Alone
Fell deep in love, but now we ain't speaking
Michael J Fox was Alex P Keaton
When I met you I said my name was Rich
You look like a girl from Abercrombie and Fitch

[Verse 2:]
Cherry Pez,cold crush,rock star boogie
Used to hate school so I had to play hookie,
Always been hip to the B-boY Style
Known to act wild and make girls smile,
Love New Edition and the Candy Girl
Remind me of you because you rock my world
You come from Georgia where the peaches grow
They drink lemonade and speak real slow
You love hip hop and rock n roll
Dad took off when you were 4 years old
There was a good man named Paul Revere
I feel much better baby when you're near
You love fun dip and cherry Coke,
I like the way you laugh when I tell a joke
When I met you I said my name was Rich
You look like a girl from Abercrombie and Fitch

[Repeat Chorus]

[Bridge:]
In the summertime girls got it going on,
Shake and wiggle to a hip hop song
Summertime girls are the kind I like,
I'll steal your honey like I stole your bike

[Verse 3]
Bugaloo shrimp and pogo sticks
My mind takes me back there oh so quick
Let you off the hook like my man Mr. Limpet
Think about that summer and I bug, cause I miss it
Like the color purple, macaroni and cheese,
Ruby red slippers and a bunch of trees
Call you up but whats the use
I like Kevin Bacon,but I hate Footloose
Came in the door I said it before,I think I'm over you
but I'm really not sure
When I met you I said my name was Rich
You look like a girl from Abercrombie and Fitch

[Repeat Chorus]

[Bridge:]
In the summer girls come and summer girls go
Some are worth while and some are so so,
Summer girls come and summer girls go
Some are worth while and some are so so,
Summertime girls got it going on
Shake and wiggle to a hip hop song
Summertime girls are the kind I like
I'll steal your honey like I stole your bike

[Repeat Chorus]

People are probably more passionate about music they hate than music they like.

A couple of songs already mentioned (Barbi Girl and Sugar) are staples in my business (i.e. they are often requested).

Some of the songs I consider among the all time worst pop include:

In the Year 2525

Whiter Shade of Pale

Brandy

I guess "purists" will say that Brandy was the only pop song of those three, so okay, those other two are just bad songs, genre left open.

Therefore, I would also include most country music, any hip hop/rap song that cannot be played on the radio without significant editing, and most anything that came out in the 90's.

"we had fun, we had seasons in the sun. But the wine and the song, like the seasons, all have gone." "Goodbye, Michelle, it's hard to die
when all the bird are singing in the sky, Now that the spring is in the air.
With the flowers ev'rywhere."

Disco Duck, Convoy, Afternoon Delight - awful awful awful. The 70's truly was the cultural nadir of the 20th century.

I think novelty songs probably shouldn't be included (which would include my suggestion of Telephone Man) because they're in sort of their own category. Is there really a debate over whether Disco Duck is worse than The Streak? They're both horrible.

Trivia: Convoy was done by an advertising guy. C.W. McCall was a character he created for a series of advertisements, I think for a hardware store. The guy who created it now inflicts us with that Mannheim Steamroller crap.

the whole trucker "subculture" thing that was driven by and also drove CB radio sales was an interesting moment in 70's American culture. the "romantic" bandit, anti-authority culture that had access to unofficial, illicit even means of communication. it's like the samizdat literature in the former eastern bloc....secret, underground communications outside the official means of communication that organized social action....like speeding, or silent protests of Soviet Occupation in Poland or Czechoslovakia.

personally i really despise that jesus jones song about waking up from history and the soup dragons "free". and edie brickell, but she's been getting beat up on Family Guy a lot so maybe i'll leave her out.

I used to be the same way out of complete hatred for that song. That being said, I "discovered" some of Van's other stuff a couple of years ago and it's REALLY good. I opened up to the remainder of his catalog and there's some incredible stuff in there. Moondance is an all-timer.
