odd casting though.

MGM gets its 'Stooges'

Penn, Carrey, Del Toro part of studio's plan
By MICHAEL FLEMING

MGM and the Farrelly brothers are closing in on their cast for "The Three Stooges." Studio has set Sean Penn to play Larry, and negotiations are underway with Jim Carrey to play Curly, with the actor already making plans to gain 40 pounds to approximate the physical dimensions of Jerome "Curly" Howard.

The studio is zeroing in on Benicio Del Toro to play Moe.

The film is not a biopic, but rather a comedy built around the antics of the three characters that Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Howard played in the Columbia Pictures shorts.

The quest by the Peter and Bobby Farrelly to harness the project spans more than a decade and three studios. They first tried at Columbia, again at Warner Bros., and finally at MGM, where Worldwide Motion Picture Group chairman Mary Parent championed the cause and bought the WB-owned scripts and made a deal with Stooges rights holders C3.

Production will begin in early fall for a release sometime in 2010. The Farrellys, who wrote the script, are producing with their Conundrum partner Bradley Thomas, and Charlie Wessler.

C3 Entertainment principals Earl and Robert Benjamin will be executive producers.

Project will get underway after Penn completes the Asger Leth-directed Universal/Imagine Entertainment drama "Cartel." He hasn't done a comedy since the 1989 laffer "We're No Angels."

The Farrellys have long had their eyes on Del Toro to play Moe. Del Toro, who's coming off "Che," showed comic chops in the Guy Ritchie-directed "Snatch."

The surprise is the emergence of Carrey to play Curly. Howard established the character as a seminal physical comedian, from the first time he appeared in the first Stooges short in 1934 until he suffered a stroke on the set in 1946.

Benicio del Toro? srsly?

it must be based entirely on physical simularity.

But Javier Bardem, the d00d who played Anton Chighur in No Country would be a better pick. I think it would be cool to watch Moe use that pneumatic cow-killer thingy on Larry played by Sean Penn.

Sean Penn can take a flying leap off a bridge...he's been a piece of **** actor since his only decent role: Jeff Spicoli.

Bout time somebody else recognized that fact. Doesn't matter how many Oscars and other accolades Sean Penn has won, to me, he'll always be Spicoli.

Why didn't they just get OUR Curly in it?

Because "OUR Curly" likes to get ****faced and then **** in strange chicks' closets.

And that's not comic gold?

Actually, it wasn't Curly. It was Larry that pisses in the closet. And leaves longwhorn socks in my RV bed.

If (when) they screw this up, I hope everyone associated with it burns in hell.
Why can't studios just leave some things alone. IMO there is NO WAY they can equal or improve on the originals on this one. (I think Carrey can come the closest.)

Sean Penn? really?

I will Sean Penn credit for Bad Boys, Mystic River and Carlito's Way.....and will try to forget about all of his other "characters"...Sam, Milk, Madonna's beeyotch.

I'll give him one thing, he called out Nicholas Cage for making meaningless action shat instead of being an actor and doing quality work.

meaningless action shat instead of being an actor and doing quality work.

WTF does Penn mean by that? Acting is inherently meaningless. I've always believed that fact explains why so many of them go crazy, suicidal or both when they finally realize the main difference between them and performing animals is human actors are capable of speech. Methinks that is also why they have so many darn awards shows. Those are merely attempts by actors and their handlers to assign some level of "official" recognition to people who have huge self-worth issues resulting from the fact they have dedicated their working lives to creating entertaining diversions for the rest of us.

What it means is that acting can be an art that accurately reflects the human condition and sheds light on certain emotional or social aspects of our lives or it can be an excuse for people to eat popcorn and drink 800 oz sodas.
