View Full Version : Congrats, Big 12!

Baylor came from behind double digits at the half and immediately rushed out to start the second by taking back the lead over Georgetown. They went on to win at home by two.

Congrats also in order to Kansas State, who beat some mid major team... Illinois State? Anyway, they won by four at overtime at home.

Baylor's win marks its first postseason victory since 1950. Hopefully, this will be the first of many congratulatory remarks for all Big 12 teams in this postseason... so long as they don't play us, of course :)

Congratulations also go to Texas A&M, who won 79-66 over BYU (http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/scoreboard).

aTm qualifies as the first upset of the tourney, because that 15-seed couldn't hold onto their lead against Memphis, tee hee. The Aggies were a 9-seed, whereas BYU was an 8-seed.

Yay, Big 12!

Dangit. I picked BYU in that one. I figured the Aggies would come out stinky.

 I refuse to congtratulate the Big 12 team that beat Minnesota last night on grounds of principle.

:D However, much adulation and kudos to the other Big 12 team who won last night, the mighty Oklahoma Sooners. All the cheap shot fouls and body slams to the floor cannot stop you from your destiny in Detroit!

Early nicknames for the university's athletic teams included the "Hawkeyes" (which is now associated with the University of Iowa), the "Antelopes" (which the University of Nebraska at Kearney later adopted), the "Old Gold Knights", the "Bugeaters" and the "Mankilling Mastodons"; the usage of "Cornhuskers" (Taken by Nebraska after Iowa University had dropped it)[citation needed] in favor of all others occurred around 1900.[1] However, they lost to the Lobos of the University of New Mexico in the opening round of the NIT, 83-71

The list used to only include Nebraska, because they lost yesterday to New Mexico, whose university mascot is the Lobos.

They lost 70-52 to San Diego St, whose mascot is the Aztec. Aztec is a term used to refer to certain ethnic groups of central Mexico, particularly those groups who spoke the Nahuatl language and who achieved political and military dominance over large parts of Mesoamerica in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries, a period referred to as the Late post-Classic period in Mesoamerican chronology.

The empire reached its height during Ahuitzotl's reign in 1486-1502. His successor, Motecuzōma Xocoyotzin (better known as Moctezuma II or Montezuma), had been Hueyi Tlatoani for 17 years when the Spaniards, led by Hernán Cortés, landed on the Gulf Coast in the spring of 1519.

Despite some early battles between the two, Cortés allied himself with the Aztecs’ long-time enemy, the Confederacy of Tlaxcala, and arrived at the gates of Tenochtitlan on November 8, 1519.

The Spaniards and their Tlaxcallan allies became increasingly dangerous and unwelcome guests in the capital city. In June, 1520, hostilities broke out, culminating in the massacre in the Main Temple and the death of Moctezuma II. The Spaniards fled the town on July 1, an episode later characterized as La Noche Triste (the Sad Night). They and their native allies returned in the spring of 1521 to lay siege to Tenochtitlan, a battle that ended on August 13 with the destruction of the city. During this period the now crumbling empire went through a rapid line of ruler succession. After the death of Moctezuma II, the empire fell into the hands of severely weakened emperors, such as Cuitláhuac, before eventually being ruled by puppet rulers, such as Andrés de Tapia Motelchiuh, installed by the Spanish.

Texas becomes the fourth Big XII team to lose, dropping our NCAA tournament record to 7-2. Not too bad so far considering we've won two 8-9 matchups and a 7-10 matchup. Our only two losses were 2-7 and 1-9 matchups so there is no shame in those losses, well no shame except the fact that we have to claim Texas as a team in our conference.

Kansas, Missouri, and OSU play tomorrow to see if they can join Oklahoma in the Sweet Sixteen.

A hearty, hearty congratulations to Big 12 teams on the women's side of the tourney.

Texas A&M beat Evansville (who?!?!) 80-45. Iowa State beat Eastern Tennessee State (ditto?!?!) 85-53. OU wins 76-47 over WNBA alum Cynthia Cooper-Dyke (I can hear you giggling across cyberspace you NTTAWWT'ers) and the Prairie View A&M Jack Rabbits (did anyone else pick up the multiple "let's go rabbits!" chants? lol). KSU beat Drexel 68-44

Most amusingly, Skeletor nearly blew her Baylor postseason up against a 15-seed Sunday, when they barely beat UT-San Antonio 87-82. Whoopsidoodle. Those poor lady bears are not going to last much longer :D

The lone first-round loser was Texas, tanking to Miss State 71-63. This qualifies as an "upset," as Texas was a 6-seed, MSU was 11.

Insider sources also report that Nebraska was the lone loser on the men's side for opening round play against New Mexico's Lobos.

I big hearty congratulations to Baylor... men. They will be heading to the Final Four of the NIT for the first time ever... and of course, as most of you have probably heard, this season represents their first postseason win(s) since 1950. They won 74-72 against Auburn, at Auburn.

Their wimmen's team won also, but just barely. Their pukely beige unis earn the honor of "second ugliest behind Ga Tech's torso bras."

I didn't mention it, but Thug Riley and the Lady Pokes are out of the WNIT. Whatev.

In other women's second round tourney action, Texas A&M destroyed Minnesota 73-42, Iowa State beat Ball State 71-57, Kansas State lost to Vandy on Monday 74-61.

With OU's win last night, that means the Big 12 will have four teams in the Sweet 16. Not too shabby! :D

Hmmm... I would say that the women's tourney is a different thing altogether, because upsets on team's own home courts are a lot more frequent. The home field advantage just isn't there for a lot of teams (unless they're used to playing in mostly-empty gyms, hmm?) and the fact that teams will even play on their home courts in the opening rounds to begin with.

Also the Big East had three 1-seeds, whereas the Big 12 had a grand total of 1, Oklahoma.

Also, get this - the 4 remaining Big 12 teams are all in separate regions, meaning there is a remote, remote, REMOTE possibility we get all four Final Four teams. I know there's UConn, but hey, nothing like an NCAA investigation distraction, right? :D
