Okay, I applauded the Prez's plan to begin merit pay for teachers and increase the length of the school day. GOOD on BHO

I gave him a pass, so far, on the trial balloon he floated to ask vet's private insurance companies to reimburse the VA for their care. NO FOUL on BHO

But...

During the campaign, he said he'd be hell on appropriations bill earmarks. He's recanted. In fact, they've embraced the succ of earmarks. NO LIKEY.

The administration knew full well many of the bailed-out financial services companies would honor their contractual obligations to pay bonuses to certain execs at those companies. In fact, the Justice Department advised the administration and Congress not to put any such restrictions in the bail-out buckets because that would result in litigation brought be those due bonuses and raises under their employment contracts. Now, they are acting all self-righteous and shocked. Rather like the Vichy French police captain in Casablanca when he shut down Rick's backroom casino. NO LIKEY.

Today, I hear AG Holder has put the kibosh on commercial airline pilots being able to fly armed to defend their cockpits from hijackers. Notwithstanding the fact that to date, no airline pilot has been observed brandishing his weapon innapropriately. NO LIKEY

At least that's the way I see it.

Merit pay and longer school days are not going to fix what's wrong with our schools, and to say what would fix them is not PC.

Apparently Congress has passed NO legislation since the current prez took office. He promised during the campaign that any bill would be posted on the internet for five (5) days prior to signing. I have seen none of that so they must not have sent him anything to sign. NO LIKEY!

What's wrong with you? They posted the 1400 page Stimulus package the night before they voted on it. You had, like, 8 whole hours to read it.

Longer school hours can make a difference

There were times when i'd be leaving work at 7 pm and kids were just getting out of school in korea

Poor basterds. They're probably burned out by the time they reach puberty.

I had not heard anything about the Prez being against earmarks. I thought that was the hallmark of his opponent.

He campaigned on halting the practice. Just like his opponent. He also said no former lobbyists would be in his administration. But for the former senator from South Dakota's tax problems, he, a former lobbyist for health care interests, would have been our Secretary of HHS.

What I like:

His timeline on removing troops from Iraq
Increasing the number of troops in Afghanistan
Phasing out stop-loss
Ending the ban on federal funding for stem cell research

What i don't like:

His explotation/scare tactics in pushing the economic stimulus plan through. To me it's very reminiscent of W using a post 09/11 world to shove the Patriot Act down our throats.

That's fine and dandy, but that's not the reason their education system is better than ours.

firing incompetent teachers can make a difference. that's a key in the plan.... to make it easier to can them... instead of promoting them to principal.

I don't disagree, but do you have a plan for replacing the fired ones?

....and there will be a lot of them.

I'm in the air on what I think until we have time to see what comes of these policies and so on, but on the teacher thing Obama HAS come out against the teacher's union on making it a bit easier to get rid of bad teachers. That doesn't mean anything will come of it...that's why I'm reserving judgment until I see how it all pans out on all fronts.

More then getting rid of incompetent teachers we need a way of getting rid of kids that are there for no other reason than the law says they have to be.

Seriously? If they don't show real world results while teaching acurriculum that's not "teaching the test". Then actually hire really good people and pay them competetively according to their experience and education...experience actually doing as well as teaching. If they suck, fire their azzes too and move on.

Teaching isn't something we can just play around with and I KNOW there are better people for the position if we'd pay them. Same goes for all the support staff in schools. At my job I deal with teachers, coaches, administrators, principals, etc. on a daily basis. And seriously...98% of them are dumbazzes in this city. They can't spell, don't remember the kids' names (and these are the ones getting trophies and plaques for their accomplishments!), can't add up the total on their invoice, don't understan what I mean when I tell them artwork guidelines, don't get the concept of "just send me the jpeg...don't embed it in a word document" nevermind the dumb look I get if I ask for an EPS, PSD, PNG, etc or ask that it be in CDR or AI format or ask that it be 300 dpi minimum.

Even worse is their grammar...grammar they've thought out in carefully composed word documents...in text for plaques and acrylic awards. They are willing to spend $30-100 or more a plaque/acrylic, but they can't write anything coherent.

I realize I type some bad English on this board when using a conversational tone, but I was an English major and intended to teach. With the pay levels they get and the lack of any incentive to do a good job I pretty much abandoned the whole concept. Without even finishing the schooling I know for a fact that I could do a better job.

I was correcting my daughter's grammar the other day and told her she'd never pass an English course in school without learning the rules and she said, "My English teacher don't think I talk bad". I explained to her that that was one of the many reasons Nevada ranks 48th in education in the US.

I know there are a lot of dumas teachers, but I don't believe there's any real intent in this country to pay teachers what they should be paid, and so you're not going to attract enough bright peeps into the profession.

For one thing, fix it so school districts don't have to hire education majors. ;)
