I'm staying in a hotel in Baton Rouge right now; obviously, LSU will be the first game shown here on Thursday but if LSU wins I won't get to see OU play on Saturday because I'm going to my parents' house this weekend and they get the Shreveport TV stations and LSU is going to be playing at the same time. Guess which game KSLA-TV will show. Even though its coverage goes up into McCurtain County, they'll air the Bayou Bengal game.

Also, AT&T's Mobile TV service is free for two months if you have never subscribed to Mobile TV before and you have a compatible phone. The best part, Mobile TV has four channels for the NCAA tourney. So you won't miss any games.

I've got a giant 42-inch HD TV in my hotel room. I really don't want to sightsee today and order room service instead and I want to stay an extra night instead of having to check out tomorrow.

3/19/2009, 03:11 PM
I see a few of you hit all three early games, but it will be interesting to see if anyone remains perfect through the rest of day one.

For the record, I am not :( LSU was one of my spiteful "hate this team" picks. :D

bri
3/19/2009, 03:14 PM
For me it was more, "These guys lost to Mississippi State. How good can they be?" The answer: "Better than Butler, apparently."

badger
3/19/2009, 03:19 PM
My picks are hardly ever educated basketball-wise because I really don't watch a lot of college basketball. But, it's still fun to pick the sister-in-law's alma mater (Western Kentucky), the parent's alma mater (Wisconsin), the school that's going against stupid OSU (Rocky Top) or the one that will hopefully take down the cheatin' trojans (I think that was Boston College, but I don't recall)

Collier11
3/19/2009, 03:23 PM

Good thing Memphis got at least 35 from the bench, but they only won by 11. They'll go down soon enough.

Collier11
3/19/2009, 03:42 PM
Everyone forgets the run Memphis made last yr, they arent the same team but it doesnt matter that they played in Conf USA.

Plenty of the top seeds come out sloppy and disinterested in the opening game. I think they will be fine and so does my bracket

bri
3/19/2009, 03:45 PM
If they can actually make threes, they're a tough out.

badger
3/19/2009, 03:47 PM
It seems like far too many teams are relying on their three shooters this season... which is probably why the conference tourneys were so weird.

Collier11
3/19/2009, 03:49 PM
thats just the way cbb has become, the 3 has revolutionized the game as so many say but it has also taken away some

bri
3/19/2009, 03:55 PM
The mid-range jumper is the most important shot to be able to make in modern basketball. Because of the three-point line, defenses come out further, but they still have that back-end rotation to stop layups and dunks. If you can get past your defender on the perimiter off the dribble, then pull up from 10-15 feet and make that little jumper before the bigs come out to help, you're money.

Collier11
3/19/2009, 03:57 PM
too bad that 80% of pro and cbb players cant consistently make that shot or they just wont shoot it

bri
3/19/2009, 04:03 PM
Exactly. All anyone ever wants to practice are threes and dunks. But how many of the great game-winning shots of all time have been threes or dunks? Most of them have been the dreaded 10-15 foot jumper. That's why you don't see as many clutch buzzer-beaters as you did a decade ago, even though everyone is seemingly more evenly matched.

King Crimson
3/19/2009, 04:12 PM
you know who makes the mid range jumper a lot, Missouri.

bri
3/19/2009, 04:13 PM
And I have them in my Sweet 16 because of it. :D

King Crimson
3/19/2009, 04:27 PM
I think Mizzou is going to make a run in the tourney, they have all the ingredients

maybe, but i think it's kind of funny to think MU is a "hot team". they lost 2 of their last 3 conference games by double digits (at KU: by 25; and at ATM, when the conf title was on the line).

and the average rpi of the teams they beat in the Big XII conf championship is about 65. the only NCAA tournament team they beat was OSU, minus Eaton for a lot of the game.

bri
3/19/2009, 04:29 PM
That's why I think they can run through the lower seeds, but I couldn't give 'em the nod over Memphis.

Kevin Harlan's calling the MSU/UW game. I'm not even watching, I'm just listening to him growl the call. :D

badger
3/19/2009, 04:36 PM

Inakrut! [hairGel]

Shouldn't we count their undefeated run through the conference tourney as their last 3 conference games?

Inakrut! [hairGel]

Shouldn't we count their undefeated run through the conference tourney as their last 3 conference games?

not my point. conference regular season. in the tourney, they won 3 games against 3 teams with an rpi average about 65. i bet there isn't much precedent for a Big XII team to win the conference tournament playing *only* one eventual NCAA team.

badger
3/19/2009, 06:08 PM
believe me, I'd prefer that the conference tourney not count for anything too... out of fairness, though :D

We haven't had a jump shot money maker player like that since Hollis.

Sooner04
3/19/2009, 06:21 PM
The disappearance of the mid-range jumper is the reason, in my opinion, why scoring has dropped off in the last 15 years. Mid-range is where you'll find the hole in today's defense, but there isn't a soul out there who can exploit it.

Players aren't nearly as offensively skilled as they once were.

bri

And that's why we haven't really been worth a damn since Hollis. We were good this year coasting on Blake's talent against frequently inferior competition, but just like Sherri's over-reliance on the Paris twins, now that we're in the postseason I fear it won't take long to discover that sh*tty guard play can nullify a dominating big man.

It was makeable, but it was also really good defense.

Yeah, but what were they winning by? Weren't they up 18 or something?

Didn't they blow a huge lead last year to Drake when they got pressed?
