1. What are the "best" games for PS3?
2. What are your personal favorites?

3. I'm looking for something similar to the old Phantasy Star Online for the PS3...do they have something like that? I'm playing Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion right now, but it's a little too RPGy for me. Too open-ended. I like something a little more structured with less RPG, online with teammates, etc. Any ideas?

I've only had mine since Christmas, so I'm not really qualified to say what the best games are.

I have NCAA Football 09. It's a really good looking game, but doesn't play as well as the PS2 versions, IMO. It blows my mind that it is the second iteration of the game on the PS3/360 and so many features from the PS2 games are missing. They don't even have all the D-1A stadiums, for crying out loud.

I also have FIFA 09. This is a really pretty game to look at, with tons of options and stuff. However, it's a lot tougher to play than the FIFA games on PS2. I've played about five games and have yet to score a goal.

My latest addition is GTA IV. Not much to say here--if you're a fan of the other games in the series, you'll like it. I'm not very far into the game, and I haven't really seen anything that has blown me away yet.

I picked up Bionic Commando: Rearmed from the Playstation Network for $10 bucks. As a fan of the original on the NES, I highly recommend this game. Grin, the company who developed it, wrote the book on how to remake/re-imagine a classic. They made good changes that you never really realized that the original needed, and everything works. High-quality game, especially for the price.

Good tip; I loved this game as a kid. I never saved Super Joe, though... :D

NP and I have an Ecks Bawks, but if you're online you might want to try Mega Man 9. Judging by your "loved this game as a kid" comment, you've been playing awhile :)

It would have been nice to have video games when I was a kid.

We finally got Pong when I was in high school.

Bio Shock, try playing it at a friends.....kill one of the "little sisters" you know, one of the little girls carrying around a syringe? Then, wait and see what happens...tee hee tee hee. :D

Metal Gear 4 Guns of the Patriots, it's pretty fun but some parts are just a pain in the *** to get around like the Geckos...the maps aren't worth a **** compared to previous versions, Otacon is even whinier in this version..beating Vamp is close to impossible..it's where i'm stuck now.

I've heard Call of Duty 4 is one of the better games, but i've yet to try it.

ps3mediaserver is easy to use.

playon is great. i signed up for the $9 a month netflix because you get 1 dvd at a time but unlimited streaming. very easy and very convenient.

plus hulu is cool. i was watching the first season of the fall guy the other day. :)

The Call of Duty franchise needs a radical update. I played that tunnel (World At War) and finished it in about three days. Now it's on the shelf. Probably won't do much with it unless I have a buddy over and we snipe each other. It was nice to get into the jungle instead of crumbling Euro cities, but still.

Then.

I got Fallout3, which is the opposite of a tunnel (rail game). Like a good PC game, there is a world to explore with quests to complete, yet it also has pretty decent FPS scenarios and cool weapons. I started it just after I got back from Miami and I'm still wandering around the devastation that is post-apocalyptic Washington D.C. two months later.

Well, I was all ready to say Oblivion before I finished reading your thread. I think it's an awesome game but understand we all have our own tastes. Other than that, Guitar Hero is the only other game I've played a lot.

I am digging Oblivion, but it's just too open ended. I prefer something a little more laid-out...e.g.- when i know one weapon is better than another, and now I can go to point B or C from A. Oblivion is so open-ended, and you don't really know if you're making the right decisions. Plus, from what I've been reading, you can mess up on a permanent basis if you don't level correctly, don't do a quest before your lievel is too high, etc.

call of duty is all about online play imo. i still haven't logged very much time on the actual game just jump online and own some 12 year olds.

NP and I are playing through that right now. I had every intention of being the bad girl while he was the good guy, but alas, I chickened out after several resets. I just didn't have the firepower to eliminate all the annoyances of having bad karma... you know, people you get missions from cower in your presence, the rest of the town tries to kill you, etc.

Thus, I became a good girl character... but dang it, as soon as I figure out what I need to do here and there, Megaton is mushroom clouding for the lowest-possible karma mission in the game! (Negative 1000)

Mallen, out of curiosity, why didn't you go with XBox 360?

I've had mine since they came out, tons of games, and the new NetFlix feature is sweet.

I often wondered if I should get the PS3, but other than NCAA football, basketball and Madden, I don't play it nearly as much as my kids.

1. Bluray player
2. Free online play

Although the Bluray thing isn't really all that awesome now that everyone can stream videos instead.

8time, I know you asked Mallen, but Let me answer that one for Mallen

NP and I were at his friend's apartment in San Antonio, where there was a Wii, a PS3 and an XBox 360... and a kicka$$ compy or two also.

We had a LOT of silent time where we were like "Ok, what random sh!t do we discuss now?" because... the PS3 was taking forever to start up its games. There were patches or whatever to install before you could play a new disc, purchasing a game from a PS3 meant waiting through the insanely long download... wait, wait, wait.

NP was pretty sold on getting a PS3 and not a 360 up until this experience for reasons mentioned above - Blu Ray and free online play. However, waiting FOR-E-VER for the PS3 to download whatever was necessary to play a game was ridiculous.

For the record, the 360 allows you to download stuff and then do something else. A little 360 green ring logo appears on the bottom of the screen when it's finished so you can immediately go to that. The PS3 had a boring loading screen that we couldn't direct away from (or if we could, we didn't know how).

For a second opinion, here is the greatest Web comic on the Web, Penny Arcade:

badger,
I bought my 360 long before the PS3 was available. I got lucky at Best Buy (insert joke) and walked in as they were putting a shipment out.

I love the Halo series (which PS3 doesn't offer), and really don't care about the Bluray thing. I've had my 360 go down once (red ring of death), and Microsoft told be to mail it in. I did, and they returned it (hard drive intact) within two weeks.

Like I said, I really play only sports games (except Halo and the COD series). Unless PS3 comes out with some Sony exclusive kick *** sports game, I'll stay with my 360.

I could insert another type of joke, because those that got lucky in the non-inuendo way were usually the ones that got scammed, when it came to Best Buy and the 360 release.

Much like other stores did when the Wii came out (Toys R Us comes to mind), stores would send fliers on the price that you expect (I think 360 was about $400 when it first came out), but in order to get it, you had to buy a bundle... a worthless "buyer protection plan," a few games, Xbox Live subscription, accessories... the price jumped to $600 or so.

Read more here. (http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/7102.cfm)

Apparently one store was caught on a local TV station as they tried to "bundle" their way to more money, so they HAD to honor the advertised price, heh heh.

1. Bluray player
2. Free online play

Although the Bluray thing isn't really all that awesome now that everyone can stream videos instead.

BluRay was the biggest reason for me. I can get OnDemand but anything through the cable company is going to be more compressed than most of your BluRay movies.

I haven't tried streaming sources. How long does it take to download them? How is the compression ratio? What's your guys opinion of those? Since I get my Internet through cable, I imagine they're not going to provide the bandwidth I need to download too many movies.

I didn't get scammed....just lucky.

It was back when my youngest son was going to half day kindergarten. I picked him up from school and went by Best Buy (probably to get a CD). He saw a stack of 360s set up at the front of the store. I went over to them and said something like "Oh, I'm sorry son...these are empty..." then I picked one up and realized it was full. I looked at the Best Buy employee standing near, and he just shook his head "yes". I grabbed it and ran. I picked up NBA basketball and one other game I can't remember (and an additional wireless controller). I can't remember what I spent, but it wasn't over $600.

That was a long way of saying I didn't get scammed.

PS3 streams fine. if you want to use the ps3 browser check out iclips.com for some concerts or you can stream a radio station you create from pandora.com

as far as streaming videos you can't go wrong (as in works right out of the box...or install as it were) with ps3mediaserver to stream your movies off your computer and playon to stream your netflix account and your hulu account as well as cbs, cnn, espn.

just google ps3mediaserver and playon and you will easily find them both.

i start the show and pause it for about a minute or less to allow a little buffer space and then i watch the show without any glitches.

i am sure their sites have info on the compression rates

I bought my 360 for $399.99 originally. I always buy the protection plan. ($59)
I have had errors come up and took my XBox to the nearest Best Buy and they've always replaced it. No waiting 2 weeks for a replacement. So, the last time I had a problem, they replaced my Xbox with store credit because they couldn't get my receipt number to pull up or something, so I got an XBox 360 Elite with 120GB of memory because they are now $399.99 instead of the basic 20GB model. Don't mean to kick PS3 or anything, but if you have problems and bought your stuff at best buy, there shouldn't be any real long term problems. XBox has a lot more downloadable content than any other gaming system. So, I can download demos of games before I go to rent or buy them.

The only problem is the lack of a blu-ray system which PS3 has. For gaming purposes, XBox 360 all the way.

When I had my problem with my 360, Best Buy said they would replace it (on the spot), but I didn't want to lose my HD data. That's why I sent it in. Didn't you lose everything when you got your replaced?

Used to own a 360 and I liked it; but I sold it in order to raise funds to buy a new car.

I'm torn right now as to buy another 360 or take the plunge and buy a PS3. To me, besides the obvious price tag, there's one difference between the two systems: PS3 has "MLB: The Show," with the newest version coming out today. I've heard great reviews about "The Show" and I want to play it bad but I don't want to pay $400 for a system just to play one game, not to mention the game itself costs about $60.

You can find some pretty good online deals for Xbox Live subscription cards - NP and I found them online for $30 each, which is like having a Poor College Student SF.com sponsorship! It's cheap!

Even the regular price of Live is less than my Bronze Sponsorship here - Bronze is $60 annually, Live is $50, so you pay less than $5 per month to play games online. It's a pretty good deal!

The download times for PS3 really bothered me, but if you don't mind, then more power to you! Yay, Blu-Ray and stuff ;)

If you don't like paying $60 for a game, I recommend checking out online rental services similar to Netflix, like Gamefly.

Eh, the initial download for MG4 was almost 4minutes, BioShock took about 2-3minutes(depends on your web speed...mine is top tier so it didn't bother me much)it just got annoying after playing for awhile you had to download more stuff.

But the download for MG4 is kinda funny, all Snake does it light up a smoke....all the while you are getting messages that "smoking is bad for you"
and he kinda leers at the message when it pops up. :D

An observation:
I've noticed XBox owners love to pick on PS3's, yet I never see PS3 owners paying any attention to XBox.
Makes me wonder who's really happier with their purchase.

(I know this will provoke a 4 paragraph response from badger. I'm not really trying to do that, just stating an observation. :) )

It's one thing to install a program on a computer. However, IMHO, that same incredibly long wait should not also be required for a video game system (and yes, REQUIRED (http://blog.capcom.com/archives/839)) in order to play a game.

Wasn't Blu-Ray supposed to be uber fast? Oh the irony.

EDIT: As you can see, my response was only two paragraphs. We've only had the 360 for a few months and we don't have PS3, I was just giving our reasons for choosing one over the other, that's all.

We are big fans of the MGS series and are hopeful that the game will come to 360 eventually. Considering how long the wait was between 3 and 4, I think I can stand to wait a little longer for enemies that moo at me.

Only the first time you play it and only on a few games. XBox never loads data on the HD?
And I've never waited 20 minutes for data to load.

Yes, there are updates that are not mandatory (they are mandatory for online play however). I'd say they take 30 seconds to install.

And there is TONS of data on the XBox 360 drive! We started with like 120GB, but when we first started playing, we only had 105 GB available. Like many Microsoft products out there (hehe), the 360 came bogged down with trial software for several things. I tried them out and for the most part they sucked.

Oh dear! "MG" did you say? You mean that game that came out for the NES and ONLY the NES in the 80s? Before Sony even produced a video game system after Nintendo dumped their CD project for Panasonic?

Or perhaps, are you referring to MSG, the most recent additions to the series?

If so, I counter your argument with subject a:

One of my OU dorm friends was a lifelong Nintendoer until the Virtual Boy.

I was only teasing - NP and I have DS's, so it's not like I'm anti-Nintendo.

I'm also not anti-PS3. I wouldn't mind getting one. However, if the game is out for both PS3 and 360, I'd probably opt for the 360 version.
