As a Coldplay fan there really isnt a way to describe them, they obviously arent rock although that is the closest way to charecterize them, they may be somewhat of a soft alternative with some rock type moments I guess?

Now they certainly are a great band, just not sure what kind of band

I kinda consider them modern brit rock, or atleast that's why the playlist i have them in is called. They only use some guitar, but not in many of their songs. They also actually play their own instruments which is bonus.

Coldplay sucks, U2 ain't had a soul since there was a glimmer of peace in Ireland, and the American music scene is a monstrosity of mediocrity that occasionally imports some British mediocrity to prop itself up and maintain mediocre status. The only way to get good music anymore...in any genre...is to dig through the real underground and hope those good bands don't pull a Devil and Daniel Webster bit and sell their soul for an MTV featured vid.

There are truly good bands all over the place that only get by on a cult following here or on foreign sales where places like Europe still have big festivals and so on for all forms of music.

We're so media saturated here and so used to the lowest common denominator in music that some tart can wail about a milkshake and be a star or some untalented moron who's never been in a band or wrote a song can win a contest and have a record deal while hardworking bands sell 2000 copis in the US and if they are lucky they'll manage to be huge in Europe or Japan where even though they have their pop scene have a loyal and devoted base of people who like real music...who care about talent!

i wouldn't quite go as far as saying that Coldplay sucks, but they seem to get WAY too much credit. (same with current U2) i'm not really a fan but i don't hate them or anything. i think i have X+Y somewhere and it's not horrible to listen to or anything.

Did you even listen to the comparisons? There are a million songs out there that have like sounds throughout them and in this song it is only a very small portion of the song that is even somewhat similiar, that doesnt make them copied...Satriani is bitter cus no one gives a crap about his song

Crucifax Autumn

That;s actually really funny. Satriani sells plenty, makes craploads of money from guitar clinics, is worshipped and copied by countless musicians, can boast of teaching some of the guitar greats of the last 30 years, and makes oodles of money on his always sold out G3 tours. He was around before Coldplay and he'll be around after.

I never meant to imply that he isnt talented, hell the guy has been nominated for 15 grammys for what it is worth. But this to me screams of bitterness, sorry.

If these guys were arrogant pricks it would be one thing, but the Coldplay members all seem very humble and even self depricating even. On top of that they had 4 grammys previous, I dont see what their motivation would be other than sheer coincidence if anything.

Win Biggest Music Award, you can say all you want about them not meaning much but I gaurantee you that anyone who doesnt have one would love one and Coldplay has 7

Sell Records, Coldplay is the biggest selling band in the world other than U2 right now. Their latest CD was #1 in something like 10 diff countries

Fan support on tour, Coldplay sells out tours in countries around the world

So if none of those work, what would you like good sir?

Scott D
2/11/2009, 02:53 PM
dude, I don't care. I just had to point out that being nominated for and/or winning a Grammy or AMA doesn't mean anything in the overall scheme. That's more marketing than anything, same with radio airplay.

People can like what groups they want to like. I think it's more of a flaw of the system that groups have to get labeled to win awards.

Music is music.

Collier11
2/11/2009, 03:18 PM

How precisely do we determine "biggest band in the world" status anyway? While these couple of bands sell huge amounts of cds in England/US and a few other European countries, there are other bands that top/near top the charts in these countries as well as all of Europe, South America and Asia, play huge concerts in all corners of the world, play huge festivals, have bigger overall fanbases, more loyal fanbases. etc.

Examples: AC/DC, ABBA, The Bee Gees, Elton John, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd have all sold between 200 and 500 million albums.

U2 is in the 100-200 million range alongside Aerosmith, Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, Cher, Bowie, Deep Purple, The Eagles, Dire Straits, ELO, Fleetwood Mac, Genesis, George Michael, Gins n Roses, Metallica, Status Quo, Tina Turner, and the Who to name a few.

in the 75-99 category are Scorpions, Journey, Van Halen, and Earth Wind and Fire.

Alice Cooper and Sabbath are in the 50 - 75 range alongside Iron Maiden, Def LEppard, the Beach Boys, meatloaf, motley crue, and REM...again just to name a few.

Coldplay is behind all of these in sales overall.

And you'd think say Springsteen has sold more than Maiden, but you'd be wrong. He's in the same range and behind. Maiden has sold 70 million albums worldwide, without any radio or mtv support to speak of.

I just paused trying to find definitive numbers on all-time concert attendance, but bands like Maiden and Alice Cooper have been seen at individual shows on all the continents by as many as 125,000 people and Maiden's headlining gig at rock in rio had 25,000 people. Maiden has done tours thet went into every type of government rule on all the continents and went behind the Iron Curtain multiple times before that Billy Joel show.

Another comparison is a relatively obscure band like Dream Theater selling out shows in like 70 countries in the last 15 years or so.

It's hard to say who's "the biggest" because of crap like the net savvy of the fans of bands, how widespread their appeal is, whether they are a "live" band or a studio band.

Hell, Hannah Montana is outselling U2 and Coldplay in the US, but who's gonna say she's the biggestin the world?

First let me say that I was merely trying to rile up the Coldplay haters amongst us, I really dont care. Biggest band in the world would probably be based off of most popular in mainstream or commercial success I assume, im not sure what numbers they use. Coldplay sold the most records in 08 of anyone but im sure they dont sale as many concert tix as some, hell this guy---> Andre Rieu has the biggest concert in 09 so far in the world. I was basing my statement off of an article I read today saying that Coldplay might have passed U2 as the biggest band in the world, it then cited record sales from their records that just came out

Coldplay has been around 10 years compared to the next closest of those listed which would be I imagine GnR or Motely Crue who have been around somewhere in the 25-30 yr range? Also keep in mind that people buy far less CDs these days and Coldplay has still sold 40-50 million in those 10 years I believe

And you'd think say Springsteen has sold more than Maiden, but you'd be wrong. He's in the same range and behind. Maiden has sold 70 million albums worldwide, without any radio or mtv support to speak of.

Actually I will refute that, Coldplay sold more cds than anyone including Hannah Montana last yr. with nearly 800k. Compare that though to past times when the #1 cd each year would sell a few million in the 1st year of its release

Critics choice best album-Billboard Fleet Foxes
Best Album Grammys-Robert Plant and Allyson Krauss
The Top 5 selling concert tours based off of gross ticket sales were
Bon Jovi
Springsteen
Madonna
The Police
Celine Dion

Most downloaded CD of the year-Coldplay (most all time also but this avenue just started in the past 5 years or so)
Top selling Album of year- Coldplay

Crucifax Autumn
3/9/2009, 01:45 AM
LEt me just say...most LEGAL downloads. Like I said...lots of this depends on computer savvy! lol

And gross ticket sales....

hmmmso because soem bands overcharge for a shot their gross goes up? Because some are ticketmaster their gross goes up? Again, no indication of actual worldwide appeal of the band.

I'm not saying Coldplay's not huge, but all the assorted variables make it impossible to determine biggest band in the world.

Collier11
3/9/2009, 02:01 AM
Oh I know, like I said I have no idea where they get that term from...ive just read several times in the past cpl months that either U2 is the biggest band in the world or stuff like Coldplay is trying to catch U2 as the biggest band in the world

3/9/2009, 09:47 AM
I'm just trying to say that the criteria is silly and doesn't factor in things like longevity (either way), pure # of people who are true fans and not just buying the "hot" song at the time, actual # of people who see the shows compared to the gross money sales of shows that charge 100 bucks plus per ticket compared to the 30 dollar ticket guys, and so on.
