View Full Version : 04's Attempt: OU vs. Iowa State Recap

Throughout my childhood I came to fear one game on our road schedule more than any other: Ames. You knew Lawrence would be tough. You expected Columbia and Stillwater to be tough, but you never knew what to expect when you traveled to Ames. We've won easy, and we've been blown out. We've won close ones, and lost heartbreakers. I've never gone into a game in Ames the least bit confident, and yesterday was no exception.

Being the bullies of the league like we are this year has its advantages. Sometimes our guys are protected by the officials and sometimes we're allowed to get away with stuff we'd ordinarily get whistled for (like the travel on Blake's fadeaway dagger). But on the flip side we have to be ready for the best our opponent has to offer. A team like Iowa State will look like garbage and lose to a team like Colorado but, at home, they turn into an uber-motivated beast. Yesterday's game was a non-stop affair of haymakers and uppercuts. We'd make a small run, and they'd respond. We'd punch, they'd counterpunch. As a fan, it was a helpless feeling. I can't imagine how aggravating it would be for a player.

We finally had them. It was 65-60, and we were one stop away from really putting the clamps on them. Then they hit a three with a hand in the face. Then we miss. Then they hit another three, and in a span of about 40 seconds we'd gone from up five to down one. Regardless of perceptions held about how good or how bad Iowa State is, you look at the scoreboard and see you're down 66-65 with a few minutes to go. You either fold or make the plays to win the ball game. Instead of folding, we outscore them 13-2 the rest of the way and win 78-68. That, my friends, is the sign of a championship ballclub.

Wake didn't make those plays yesterday.
Texas didn't make those plays yesterday.
Duke didn't make those plays earlier this week.

But we did. And we've been making them all year long. Those thoughts will serve us very well come March.

SCORING BREAKDOWN:
1st - 19 [spit.]
2nd - 14
3rd - 18 [millions of loogies, loogies for me.]
4th - 27 [you need coolin', baby, i'm not foolin'!]

[b]LEADING SCORERS:
29 - Willie Warren [finest freshman guard to ever play at OU, in my opinion.]
23 - Blake Griffin [turning into a second-half monster.]
10 - Juan "The Chupacabra" Pattillo

LEADING REBOUNDERS:
15 - Blake Griffin [ho, hum. another 20/15 game.]
6 - Willie Warren
4 - Taylor Griffin
4 - Tony Crocker

PLUSES:
1. Willie Warren: It's so odd to see a true freshman carry us through games, but we definitely lose both the Rice game and the Iowa State game without him. I'm convinced we're working on those 27-footers in practice because we hit them with regularity. But then to be able and stretch the defense and take advantage of it by driving to the hole when needed speaks to a very high basketball IQ. The kid is a phenomenal player. PHENOMENAL. And that dunk, holy cow. We've had more all-timer dunks this year than I ever thought possible.

2. Blake Griffin: How many times can a guy put up 20 and 15? It's incredible. His offensive rebounding was special yesterday. He kept possessions alive where we desperately needed points. His falling down assist to Pattillo was one of the greatest plays I've ever seen by a big man. His vision from the post might be his most underrated asset. He also had a tremendous block at the end of the game that erased what would've been a sure lay-up.

3. Austin Johnson: We saw now what he means to us on the defensive end of the floor. We were forced out of position by Johnson not being able to guard Garrett up top. With everyone moved up a spot, the lane was an open freeway for the Cyclones and they took advantage of it when he wasn't on the floor. When he came back, he again stepped up to the plate and hit another big shot to put the game out of reach. He did it against eATMe, he did it against the Aggroids, and he did it against Iowa State. Three huge road wins, three huge shots by Austin Johnson.

4. Juan "The Chupacabra" Pattillo: He's still raw to the speed of the D-1 game in certain phases, but the guy has got great hands and he's using them to finish on the opposite side of Blake. He's the key that's turned us from a generous Top 10 team to a sure-fire Top 5 bunch. His athleticism has left me slack-jawed on many different occasions.

MINUSES:
1. Taylor Griffin: Probably his worst game of the year. He blew a couple of lay-ups and had a rough time defending Brackins. He'll be better, but he may lose quite a few minutes to The Chupacabra as the year progresses.

2. Broadcasting Crutches: If you took a sip of Schlitz every time you heard the words "Hilton Magic" yesterday you would've been loopier than Eddie Sutton on his way to the airport.

3. Rebounding: We did well overall, but we let a few get away defensively that led straight back to Cyclone points. There's no way they should've had 10 offensive rebounds. But, I shant gripe too much.

7-0 in the Big 12 with a pair of home games ahead this week. K-State did us a huge favor yesterday in Austin, so we just have to keep taking care of our business. Once you start rolling like we are, the confidence just continues to swell. Right now we don't just think we can win the close games, we KNOW we're going to win them, and that is extremely refreshing. I've died a thousand deaths watching us lose close road games over the year, but I never felt like we were going to lose in the second half yesterday. I just knew we'd make plays, and we did. I'm really starting to believe in this group, and it's scaring the hell out of me. It's a good scared, but it's still scary. :)

Thank you for your time.

If we actually go to Texas and lose then that K-State win yesterday will really make us look bad.

How is that exactly? Did we not beat KSU on their own court?

Because a mediocre KSU team beats Texas at Texas and if we go down and lose then thats gonna look bad on us.

What happens if we look bad as opposed to kinda bad or not as bad as I thought or we are as bad as some think we are or man...we ain't that bad or we are as bad as we thought we were?

Seriously...

I don't think were bad at all.

Matter of fact...I think we're pretty good. Which is better than I thought we were. I remember thinking we might be OK this year and then I saw OUr boys play at the BOK and I thought...that was a pretty easy win...either Tulsa is really bad or we're really good or maybe even both. :D

Everybody is trying to knock us off folks!

When we come to their Town...people are buying tickets to see us get knocked off. I know...I was shocked too. :D

When your Number One in the Big XII they come gunning for you! It's always been that way. It's nothing Coach Capel has created...it's what he's finally taking over. He's gunning them down ONE BY ONE!

GO SOONERS ! ! !

the Arkansas game looks semi-bad. If we lose on the road in Austin its not bad. They have gotten the better of OU down there. KSU stole one yesterday. It happens.

and I agree 04, this teams knows its gonna win the close ones. I can now watch the game completely because I too believe we will win. I used to turn the channel when other teams would play like ISU did yesterday.

I knew we were going to win in the second half, but I didn't know if we would cover the 9 points I laid and neither did half the sportsbook at The Mirage.

Good wrapup. I like this team.

Not in the least. If we're 31-3 at the end of the conference tourney nobody is going to remember that one of our losses was on the road in Austin to a team that lost at home to K-State.

They'll just say, "Oklahoma, 31-3, and the #1 seed in the _________ Region."

No, that crap doesn't matter that much in basketball, you'll be talking about a 30 win team. All that K-State win means is more cushion for OU in the conference standings.

We beat KSU at their house. What are you getting at?

The only thing I worry about at this point is that the Big 12 is terrible, and we're getting an inflated sense of our self-worth because we're playing against crap all the time. I don't know how true that is, but that's my concern.

I still say we're a really good team that can beat anyone if we're on.

I felt like we could have run away with it in the first half. It seemed like when we got the 11 point lead, we got a little too loose on the offensive end. Taylor jacked up a couple of shots that he needs to put back in his tool bag and leave there. Then they got hot and got some confidence.

AJ's cool as a cucumber. That 3 he hit broke their will. Ein fuhrer jacked up a desperation 3 their next possession and the game was over.

No way, our conference is the best! We have only *quality* losses. I mean, just look at Arkansas. Wait, never mind.

Heh! I will say that our team changed after that game for the better. They got that loss out of the way, then decided they would turn up the intensity a notch no matter who the opponent was.

That's not saying they play their hardest all the time, but I think they learned not to take anyone lightly. Hopefully. Please.

And what exactly is "goaltending"? The last few times I've seen that called against Blake, I didn't see the ball "inside the cylinder" and the TV announcers disagreed with the calls.

Where's the "cylinder", vertically above the rim or horizontally, encompassing the entire backboard?

Here's the NBA definition:

Section I-A Player Shall Not:
a. Touch the ball or the basket ring when the ball is using the basket ring as its lower base.
EXCEPTION: If a player near his own basket has his hand legally in contact with the ball, it is not a violation if his contact with the ball continues after the ball enters the cylinder, or if, in such action, he touches the basket.
b. Touch the ball when it is above the basket ring and within the imaginary cylinder.
c. For goaltending to occur, the ball, in the judgment of the official, must have a chance to score.
d. During a field goal attempt, touch a ball after it has touched any part of the backboard above ring level, whether the ball is considered on its upward or downward flight.
e. During a field goal attempt, touch a ball after it has touched the backboard below the ring level and while the ball is on its upward flight.
f. Trap the ball against the face of the backboard. (To be a trapped ball, three elements must exist simultaneously. The hand, the ball and the backboard must all occur at the same time. A batted ball against the backboard is not a trapped ball.)
g. Touch any live ball from within the playing area that is on its downward flight with an opportunity to touch the basket ring. This is considered to be a "field goal attempt" or trying for a goal.
h. Touch the ball at any time with a hand which is through the basket ring.
i. Vibrate the rim or backboard so as to cause the ball to make an unnatural bounce.
PENALTY: If the violation is at the opponent's basket, the offended team is awarded two points, if the attempt is from the two point zone and three points if it is from the three point zone. The crediting of the score and subsequent procedure is the same as if the awarded score has resulted from the ball having gone through the basket, except that the official shall hand the ball to a player of the team entitled to the throw-in. If the violation is at a team's own basket, no points can be scored and the ball is awarded to the offended team at the free throw line extended on either sideline. If there is a violation by both teams, play shall be resumed by a jump ball between any two opponents at the center circle.
