My wife dumps a bunch of canned **** (corn, green beans) in there with chicken broth and chicken. Then when it's almost done her version of dumplings is canned biscuits that she jut stacks on top and lets cook about halfway.

She can't cook anything...not even a sammich!

The wife typically will boil or preferably pressure cook a whole chicken. She lets the chicken cool, then bones (heh) the chicken. Strains the broth - gets some of the fat off of it and puts the broth and chicken meat in a big pot. Slices some carrots, celery and minced onion and puts it in the pot and lets it simmer. Some other seasonings I'm sure. She makes the dumplins from Bisquick - follows the directions on the box.

damn good.

Vet, it's your dinner, add what you like. I like corn and peas in mine along with that other stuff.

Newbomb's wife has it right. And Bisquick makes a pretty good dumplin. I would call them very very close to made from scratch.

Crucifax, your line about mushroom soup cracked me up. lol

Dumplings from scratch are way better than Bisquick dumplings. If you use boneless/skinless chicken breasts boiled in home made chicken stock, you don't have to worry about skimming the fat off or boning the chicken. It just falls apart. Fresh or frozen veggies and a few special spices make this stuff primo!

Who the **** puts carrots in chicken and dumplings?

Tailwind, this puzzles me. Scratch>Bisquick for the dumplings. Probably legit.

"Boneless/skinless chicken breasts" for chicken and dumplings? Not legit. Bring on the dark meat. :)

Yeah, there's a reason I generally cook even though I work all day!

And...this is my life. We I leave town for work I have to make sure my wife has spagetti ingredients and hamburger helper as this is all she can make.

Chicken and dumplings is chicken and dumplings only. That's the way my great granny made 'em and I know she was right.

Eh, just the chicken and them dumplings...the ones made from scratch not the ones the dog leaves behind on the floor.

Though that would be a great dinner for your friends, if they are horns. :D

:les: Tastes like down home cookin!

Peas? Carrots?

Have you people lost your minds?I'm with JM on this one. If you add veggies to chicken and dumplings then you have something closer to chicken noodle soup.

I've started to cheat in recent years. I make mine using chicken broth out of the can and adding rotisserie chicken pieces. I do make the dumplings from scratch though.

When you are trying to cook "heart-smart" breasts are the way to go. Less fat, dig?

One of the biggest disappointments of my life was ordering chicken and dumplings, then getting some sort of cream-of-chicken soup with peas and carrots with a biscuit (literally) baked on top. If that isn't a deceptive trade practice, I don't know what is.
