Maryland is getting thrashed by Duke! Down by 40 just starting the second half.

Gary Williams is gone after this year as I assume he will retire. Maryland is a basketball school!

To be fair, wasn't Maryland close to the Big East crown this past season?

And didn't this guy win Maryland a title in 2002?

However... the thread topic is a far more intriguing discussion. Jeff Capel is a hot coaching commodity and Because his family is still fairly young, he is probably not feeling obligated to stay in Oklahoma just yet like Stoops or Coale would (they have elementary-age kids, Capel's kid is very young still)

So... Jeff Capel... Geoff K-Pro... what will it take for you to stay here longer? If the answer is "Gut LNC and make seating closer to the court and more fan and student friendly," I will hug you.

Well, G-Town is pretty close to College Park, so yes. :D

Williams is GONE after this season. Think Phil Fulmer in Tennessee.

Williams has only had one winning record in ACC play since winning the championship, and Maryland has pretty much ceased to be relevant as a factor in the ACC for five years. He's basically a skinny basketball coaching version of Fulmer at this point. Ever since Billy Hahn left for La Salle, and subsequently disgraced himself, Maryland has been unable to recruit top tier talent, which is inexcusable for school with Maryland's facilities and tradition.

IF Quannas White had been healthy that would have been our title

Only if by "close to the Big East title" you mean "Plays in the ACC."

In fairness, their chances of winning the Big East or the ACC are pretty much identical.

You can recruit to Oklahoma.
You can win at Oklahoma.
You can get paid at Oklahoma.

Big things are on the horizon, sports fans. You need not worry. This job is not a stepping stone. It's a destination.

Thanks for the optimism, I think you're right! I imagine the list of schools Capel would leave us for is fairly short...

Shows how much I follow Maryland football... they really suck, but so do the teams in whichever conference they play in.

So... forget Maryland. Where will Jeff Capel go and why... how can we get that prevented

A sprained ankle changed history in NCAA basketball in 2002. In 2003, Hollis was so beaten up in the Big XII tourney that he was nearly unable to perform and we still made it to the Elite Eight playing Syracuse in New York. In football, Jason White had wrist and leg injuries carried over from the season and we made it to the BCS Championship game in 2003 playing LSU in Louisiana.

Maryland isn't the only school who would be interested. Arizona might be looking soon. As good as job as Maryland, maybe better. I hope Capel stays, I really like him. He is a great coach and a great person. Same for Coale and Stoops. I like the people we have leading our programs.

I think Capel is here until Coach K retires and then he will have to compete resume wise with a lot of other coaches. Unless he wins a title.

As for gutting the LNC and making it more basketball'ish, why on earth would we do that? refurbish and built on to the Fieldhouse... PLEASE refurb and build on to the fieldhouse we only need 10000 seats for basketball anyway.

Edit: Nevermind refurb has already begun since I left campus... This is a REAL basketball facility. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McCasland_Field_House

I think a deep run in the tourney, especially a Final Four run, will go a long way to keeping Capel here fore the long haul. Look at where we started. To come from where we were to where we could be in just three years shows a lot about what kind of program this is, as well as what kind of coach Capel is.

Duke's facility is famous, but IT IS A DUMP! There's fewer seats that are always sold out, but there is no hope of them ever changing Cameron Indoor Stadium because that place is too special to alumni and administration, methinks.

Thus... that might give us a little bit of a bargaining chip in the Capel duel should it ever come to that.

My hope is that we secure Capel in a longer deal that he can't opt out of. It's what allowed the Milwaukee Bucks to keep George Karl when the UNC job came open (the job went to SMU's now-head coach Matt Doherty).

Or perhaps, Duke will escort Coach K out after a few more tourney meltdowns which will leave all of his faithful former dookies so upset that none will want the job at Duke.

Wishful thinking :D

If Maryland or Arizona want Capel I dont' see him stayin' at OU. I would like to think I am wrong but just don't see him staying and turning down either of those two school especially Maryland

What are the chances that they would ever change the configuration of LNC? It would so awesome if they would bring the seats closer to the court. The atmosphere at LNC just isn't what it could be if fans were closer to the action. As much as I dislike OSU, the atmosphere there is great. The crowd is right on top of the court and makes the games even more exciting to watch.

I completely agree, ive always said the only thing that I am jealous of the little brothers for having is gia. I might just be an optimist but I think if we remodel the inside of the LNC and made it a much better place to WATCH a game that more people would make the effort to be there and not stay home to watch on TV.

Plus having a more imposing arena would help with recruiting. It would also show Capel that we are serious.

I have it on pretty reliable authority that this can't be done due to the proximity of the water table to the surface.

LNC is going to be what it is, and it just isn't designed for basketball. Not in the traditional sense anyway. It's like a mini NBA arena and those arena's are designed not to be a basketball arena, but to be an arena for many sports due to taxpayers paying for it, for everything from concerts to hockey games.

The Field House though, can be one of those legendary facilities and right now it is 8000 seats. It is more of a wrestling facility now.

If I ever make my millions, I would propose building a classic style basketball facility connected to LNC and make another wing down there for both Womens and Mens basketball games. I would rather have it closer to the traditional campus, but I also like the parking and the advantages to leaving the games compared to football.
