Zombies and Nazis. They're the two groups we, as a society, have agreed can be killed without further justification than their title, so it's only natural someone would eventually think, "Let's just make zombie Nazis so that we really don't have to feel any remorse in their murder." Norwegian director Tommy Wirkola's Dead Snow isn't the first time the two forces will merge, but it may be the first time "Ein, zwei, DIE" is used as a tagline, so for that it's won my kudos.

Funny People

Is there a second Adam Sandler movie I want to see in my adult life? I think there might be! Funny People may be a formulaic finally-truly-living-after-nearly-dying romantic comedy, but how can you resist Adam Sander, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Jason Schwartzman, and others all acting not-that-hammy in a Judd Apatow film? You can't. Unless you're one of the people who are sick of the overexposure of Judd Apatow and all of his cronies, in which case you'll hate this:

In a darkly comic homage to "Alien" and "The Thing", the cast and crew of an adult film, stranded in a blizzard, must band together against a mysterious and deadly alien, which has possessed the actor with the biggest part--Ron Jeremy (naturally). Now, with the monster on a killing spree, the race is on to trap and destroy it before there are more victims of its peculiar skills.

Um, yeah.

Movie News

Mickey Rourke, enjoying new-found popularity after his acclaimed role in The Wrestler, and Scarlett Johansson, still enjoying constant popularity for being really hot, have officially joined the cast of Iron Man 2.

Rourke, who had reportedly been in negotiations for months following Marvel low-balling him with a $250,000 offer, will take on the part of the Russian villain Whiplash, while Johannson will be replacing a previously-engaged Emily Blunt as Soviet spy Black Widow. Plot details are still minimal, but I can only assume these two characters are teaming up to prank Iron Man into believing he's time traveled to the Cold War.

Jackie Earle Haley Officially Creating Nightmares on Specific Street

http://www.iwatchstuff.com/2009/04/06/jackie-earle-haley.jpg

Adding to his geek cred and ensuring him a signing booth at comic cons in case this acting this doesn't work out, Jackie Earle Haley has officially signed on to wear a blade-covered glove the A Nightmare on Elm Street remake. From Variety:

Jackie Earle Haley is moving to Elm Street, signing to star as iconic killer Freddy Krueger in New Line and Platinum Dunes' relaunch of "A Nightmare on Elm Street."

Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are producing with John Ricard co-producing. Samuel Bayer will direct from Wesley Strick's script, with lensing set to begin next month in Chicago.

New Line decided last year to relaunch the movie series centered on the iconic killer, who haunts the dreams of teenagers and kills them in their sleep. Krueger was played by Robert Englund in the 1984 original, spawning nine films and two TV series in what was New Line's most lucrative franchise until "The Lord of the Rings."

It's so much harder to completely deride these cash-grab sequels when they make a smart, fan-approved decision like this one. A naturally creepy, Academy Award-nominated actor playing the infamous dream-haunting killer sounds unnervingly positive. Where's the talk of arbitrary, unnecessary updates to the iconic Freddy Krueger appearance? This morsel isn't enough to lure me into the positivity van, but I am cautiously approaching it.

I rarely support classic horror remakes, but I might be on the wagon for his one. Rorschach to Freddy? I like it.

Office Space's Mike Judge has a new comedy coming out, and unlikely his largely-overlooked last film, Idiocracy, this one's getting a theatrical release! The Juno duo of Jason Bateman and J.K. Simmons have re-teamed, and they're now joined by a scraggly-haired Ben Affleck, SNL's Kristen Wiig, and Mila Kunis as "babe Jason Bateman's sexually frustrated protagonist really wants to sleep with." With a team like that, how could it not be pretty good? Have a teaser trailer:

Michael Bay is good at what he does. Put Megan Fox scantily clad on screen, blow stuff up, have non-stop action and make an entertaining movie. He will never, I repeat, never win an Oscar for best director.

If Steven Spielberg watches it and the only two words he says are "It's awesome", I'm sold. Loved the first one, second one looks 10 times better.

It's Natural Born Killers, with zombies, only not at all! More accurately, it's the Zombieland trailer, starring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin, and Emma Stone as zombie survivalists, and Mike White as a guy on a toilet.

Sir Ian McKellen delivers Stephen-Fry-in-Hitchhiker's-Guide-style narration over the whole thing, and it's a joy to hear Gandalf say the word "zombie." A real sandwich for your ears:

Roland Emmerich, director of such regular-people-and-a-few-government-people-coping-with-apocalyptic-events films as Independence Day, Godzilla, and The Day after Tomorrow, has a new regular-people-and-a-few-government-people-coping-with-apocalyptic-events film coming out this November, and this time the danger is more real, and more vague than ever. It's not monsters, aliens, nor global warming or cooling--this time it's just crazy schit happening, dudes!: We're so *ucked!

From the writer of The Wrestler comes another sports-themed film that initially sounds kind of amusing its premise but ends up being really, really tragic (and probably really good): Big Fan, starring Patton Oswalt as a parking lot attendant and New York Giants fanatic who must cope with the aftermath of being beaten half-to-death by his football hero.

Watch this trailer. It appears Kick-***, as its name implies, might genuinely be kind of kick-***. I mean, assuming I'm using the term correctly. It's like a "cool" or a "rad," right? That's a "kick-***"? Then yes.

Oh, and it's recorded illegally from a convention, so don't tell Johnny Law.

Want your first look at Don Cheadle's War Machine suit and Mickey Rourke's Star Trek: The Next Generation-inspired laser whips to be shaky, dark, and both visually and aurally indiscernible? Then enjoy the Iron Man 2 footage that was shown at the Comic Con. Besides the aforementioned War Machine and Whiplash scenes, it contains: Tony Stark put on trial by Larry Sanders, Scarlett Johansson jumping around, Sam Rockwell holding guns, and evidence that "I am Iron Man" is basically Tony Stark's equivalent of Urkel's "Did I do that?" What a treat for a Monday afternoon.

The Late William F. Buckley wrote the following shortly before he died:

You must have the narrative of what happened one day last week.

I was at work, with an assistant, on a long project, a book about the Goldwater campaign and the events leading up to it. At noon I had an e-mail from my oldest friend, a historian-belletrist, a knighted Englishman, whose message was that I must interrupt whatever I was wasting time on in order to catch a particular movie.

The title he gave me was The Lives of Others. My companion hadn’t heard of it either. Still, so urgent was my friend’s recommendation that we instructed Google to advise us where, within reasonable reach, we could find it.

We were given one theater 15 miles east of my study, at an odd hour of the evening. But west about the same distance was a matinee at 4:15. So we threw duty to the winds and arrived at the theater in Mamaroneck, New York, which like most modern theaters husbands five different movies, requiring you to specify which it is you are there to see.

We were ushered into a dark chamber entirely empty. The ticket seller told us that if we had arrived two minutes later, the theater would have been shut. “If there’s no one here, we don’t show the film.”

Two hours and twenty minutes later we came away. The house was still empty. I turned to my companion and said, “I think that is the best movie I ever saw.”

Moon was awesome.
A Serious Man was just plain incredible, buch like virtually everything the Coens have released.
Hurt Locker is a great movie, but has a ton of problems with accuracy as far as actual military procedures.
Men Who Stare at Goats is on my watch list, but I haven't seen it yet.
The rest on that list I either haven't seen or think suck.

I'd add, and not all are new...Some are just lesser known over the last 2-3 years:
W Delta Z
Whatever Works
The Man From Earth
The Maiden Heist
Staten Island
Anamorph
Antichrist
Harry Brown
Capers
5 Dollars a Day
Across the Hall
Fanboys
He Was a Quiet Man
Killshot
Lake Mungo
The Killing Room
Synecdoche, New York
Wristcutters: A Love Story
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
Young People F*cking
The Chemical Wedding (AKA Crowley)

That's just a few off the top of my head, with a mind toward more variety and movies that are different and/or lesser known.

I'm adding Look to the list I posted on page 8. The one from 2007 about security cameras and so on BTW, not any of the other 5000 movies with that title. I watched it last night and it was a truly different kind of movie.

The IMDB Synopsis:

The Post-9/11 world has forever changed our notion of privacy. There are now approximately 30 million surveillance cameras generating more than 4 billion hours of footage every week in the United States. And the numbers are only growing. The average American is captured over 200 times a day - in department stores, gas stations, changing rooms, and even public bathrooms. No one is spared from the relentless, unblinking eye of cameras hidden in every nook and cranny of day-to-day life.

Shot entirely from the point of view of the security cameras. Adam Rifkin's "Look" follows several interweaving, storylines over the course of a random week in a random city.

A high school English teacher tries his best to be a decent husband; a department store floor manager uses the warehouse for more than just storage; a Mini-Mart clerk has big dreams; a lawyer struggles with a sexual dilemma; and two sociopaths thrive on ruining the lives of random strangers. "Look" tells five private stories which unfold before the prying eye of the covert camera to chilling effect.

We all choose to hide aspects our lives from those around us, whether it is as benign as picking our noses in an empty elevator or something much darker. "Look" poses the pivotal question: Are we always alone when we think we are?

"Look" around you and wonder... who is watching?

127 Hours-I hope they show it in OKC, this movie looks absolutely incredible!

Battle: Los Angeles- Corny title, same over-used theme of apocalypse/alien invasion. But the trailer makes it look like it could be a totally kick-*** movie.

Cowboys and Aliens- I have no idea what this movie is about (obviously something to do with cowboys and aliens), but it looks awesome.

Battle Los Angeles is supposed to be a mix of Independence Day and The Hurt Locker. Could be great or could be crap.

127 Hours looks incredible, Franco is a highly underrated actor IMO

Battle LA looks like it could possibly be good

Cowboys and Aliens looks retarded other than the fact that Favrau directs it, that might make it worth watching

The Fighter

For those of you who dont know about Mickey Ward, go youtube some of his fight highlights. This guy was a beast, would go toe to toe with anyone and took a beating to produce 3 Fights of the Year if I remember correctly

Groundhog Day directed by Michael Bay. Got it.

Obviously you didn't see Moon or you'd know that Duncan Jones is much better than that. As for Collier's comment about the "love story" side of it, he had a touch of that in Moon too, and it was better for it.

Just had to point it out since Bay is a huge hack and one of the worst things to happen to the art of filmmaking ever.

Thor Trailer is Live, and It Looks… Decent?

http://cdn.fd.uproxx.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Hopkins-Thor-Movie-LobsterDog.jpg

Marvel’s Thor stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, and Anthony Hopkins, and was directed by Kenneth “Cap’n Shakespeare” Branagh, so if nothing else, the concept is really weird. Like the teaser, it opens with Clark Gregg interrogating Thor, trying to find out where he got his training — Afghanistan? Chechnya? Try VIKING HEAVEN, MOTHERF*CKER!!

Just because no movie trailer thread is complete without it, I present...The Human Centipede

In all seriousness, I recommend this one (although I have yet to obtain a copy). Bradley Beesley cut his teeth doing Flaming Lips videos, has done Okie Noodlin', The Flaming Lips documentary entitled The Fearless Freaks, and also the acclaimed Summercamp!.

Here is his latest...Sweethearts of the Prison Rodeo:

This takes place in Oklahoma, at one of the last prison rodeos conducted.

Really?

Yes, really. I thought it was great and I've seen it in quite a few top tens of 2010 critics list. The two kids in the American version are insanely talented which is the main reason the film plays so well besides the story-line, cinematography and 80's soundtrack.

A couple of years ago, "Let the Right One In," a Swedish horror film-cum-juvenile love story about an eternally preteen vampire and a bullied loner of a schoolboy, placed on the MSN top 10 list. Against all odds, the American remake of the film -- relocated from the contemporary suburbs of Stockholm to the frozen winter days and long nights of 1983 Los Alamos, N.M. -- earns its place on the 2010 list as the rare remake that honors the original while creating its own evocative (and distinctly American) take. Director-screenwriter Matt Reeves' first feature, "Cloverfield," was (by design) nervous and jittery, a film charged by the adrenaline of panic. "Let Me In" couldn't be more different. The haunting atmosphere of stillness and silence is as formidable as its dark, wintry setting, and the icy chill cuts to the bone and to the heart. In many ways, Reeves' vision is both more feral and more vulnerable than the Swedish original: The angel-faced monster (Chloë Grace Moretz of "Kick-***") and devoted human boy (heartbreakingly lonely Kodi Smit-McPhee) are just a couple of kids in a predatory world, and their devotion is as genuine as it is inevitably tragic. Under the hush of snow glowing softly below the hazy streetlamps is a jumble of primal emotional drives -- to live, to feed, to connect, to survive, to sacrifice one's heart and soul (and blood) -- that erupt with a terrible and beautiful ferocity. -- Sean Axmaker

Wow. I almost forgot. The American was surprisingly good. You have to respect a movie where the main character only does one of two things: Bang hookers or builds machine guns. I will never thumb my *ss at arthouse cinema again.

Different strokes I guess. I gave that movie a solid "meh". Just didn't do it for me.

Speaking of doing it for me, a movie I was prepared to hate and ended up really liking was Black Swan. Portman wins walking away. Can't get that damn song out of my head.

Yeah, I saw Thor is 3D earlier. I liked it. Looking forward to Captain America now. Everything is setting up for the monster blockbuster The Avengers. Apparently it will include Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Widow (Scarlett Johanson), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), and The Incredible Hulk...among others. I hope Natalie Portman is in it. She's hawt. :hot:
