WASHINGTON — As former President George W. Bush's helicopter whisked him from the Capitol over the 2 million people on the National Mall to Andrews Air Force Base, parts of the crowd burst into a riff of "Nah nah nah nah, hey hey hey, goodbye," a song usually reserved for losing sports teams.

Bush left the presidency with the lowest approval rating of any president except Richard Nixon, according to a new New York Times/CBS poll, which put Bush's final rating at 22 percent.

Wow, I can't believe you just said that.

Not that it matters as it is trivial and quite picky but since you brought it up, it was our Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (nominated by Bush) who couldn't get it right. Of all people who should get it right he should but he messed it up.

Obama paused as if to tell Roberts that he messed up the oath. It's sad when Obama had to get Roberts to repeat it correctly. Of course, by that point Obama was flustered and he ended up stating it as Roberts initially did but it was clear Obama knew the oath and Roberts was the one who messed up.

Again, it's not really a big deal but since you brought it up I'll point out that your constitutional scholar messed up the only thing he had to do that day.

Things are already set into motion. If you lose your job it will because of the once in a lifetime economic collapse that was set into motion long before we even knew who Obama was.

Our entire government, dem and republicans, dropped the ball on common sense regulation of our banking sector. They all forgot all of the lessons we learned from the Great Depression.

Some (democrats) were blinded by increases in home ownership rates and were clueless to the law of unintended consequences. Others (Bush and even Clinton) were blinded by the dogma of limited regulation.

interesting thread.

just a comment on one earlier post... about W keeping our country safe. well, he didn't. we don't need reminding of what happened. we might be able to blame clinton for that, but it happened on W's watch.

i digress. i heard this point explained very well the the day on the radio - local guy, vietnam vet, liberal. basically said that whole point of not being attacked since 9-11 is complete BULL SH*T. paraphrasing, "i've dropped a tissue out the window everyday i've ever come to work, and elephants have never stampeded main street in rochester, ny. does that mean if i don't do it one day, elephants will go on the rampage? NO."

just because you did something (or didn't) doesn't mean you prevented something else from happening (or not happening).

personally, i'm very optimistic about O... and couldn't be happier about W being back in texas.

A great summary of Obama on Nova or Frontline this week. "Dreams of Obama" describes how they "managed" his U.S. Senate career so as to reduce any negatives. Daschle told him to run now before he had a voting record. Not a slam, but this guy is very calculating and he did what he did to position himself for this point in time. Shrewd, but I wouldn't want to be on his bad side or in his way. This did not just "happen", all of this was planned. I suspect from what I saw in this story, he may be more moderate than many think in building concensus for his issues, but he is a liberal - socialist in thinking.

Good review of his early years and his Harvard time as well.

I'm not disagreeing with anything you're saying. I just want to point out that it's interesting that you saw this enlightening documentary on PBS. Some folks might call the notion of public televison "socialist," yet apparently they are the only news outfit providing credible, balanced news coverage at the moment.

As discussed in other thread today, it's a bad deal when news outfits become corporatized. They are expected to become profit centers, and the quality of the resulting journalism goes swiftly down the s**ter.

I think we're all missing a valid gem coming from this thread. LAS is an inappropriate abbreviation for Los Angeles Sooner. LAXS is much better, and it distinguishes him from any Vegas sooner. :)

I dare folks on both sides of the Aisle to start a thread where two disagreeing parties can come out respecting each other, perhaps even gleaning some tidbits from opposing views that one may find useful.

Some opening dialogue may go something like this:
Opening Post: "Dear former President Bush,
The majority of information that I've read, watched, and listened to places much of the blame for this current economic crisis on your head. Therefore I'm relieved to see you exiting office."

Replies: "I can see where this may appear as his fault, but I disagree because I feel that there is more to blame beyond the executive branch. This includes a democratic led congress, a republican led congress, etc etc. I'd be interested in reading more about what persuades you to feel this way about our former President."

See how it works? It's called eliminating hyperbole, polarizing statements , false dichotomies, and basic overall disrespect for numerous folks we've only been acquainted with online. It may actually increase your knowledge base, and, at the same time, you may even make friends!
