If nothing else, at least I like both these teams. Whoever wins becomes my de facto rooting interest for the Stupendous Bowl. Of course, if the Purple Sooners win, I'm that much happier.

Nothing like seeing Phil Simms and Jim Nantz standing next to each other with microphones to reassure me that leaving the sound off is a wise choice.

Bah.

Fox/CBS made the decision, don't they always make those decisions for the NFL?

From what I heard, Fox and CBS alternates the game time. After all, who really thought an NFC West team would actually HOST the NFC Championship Game. If you did, you should have put money down in Vegas on them.

that was td
No it wasn't.....he was clearly down short of the goal line.

really. he clearly had possession and control
The NFL carrying the ball around like a baby for 5 minutes after the catch is a bit ridiculous..but it was correct according to the rules. Much like the bogus "kick going out of bounds" call in the Cards-Eagles game. It should have been Steelers ball at the 1 foot line but the rule is the rule whether it is bad or not.

It would help if the Ravens could get a first down.

One other thing, why doesn't anyone do the old Dick Winder Quick QB Sneak play? It seems they take so long at the line that it let Mr. Longhair to move all the way up and make a play.

Worst officiating call of the day. Personal Foul Roughing the Kicer for 15 yards and a first down and he never touched the kicker. The only time he touched him was when the kicker laid a drop kick on him. Oh well, at least they didn't give up any points. Hope Ivy is ok, he got rocked.

Why don't the Steelers get called for helmet-to-helmet contact? Flacco got hit in the head by Harrison with his arm one time. It makes it easier to be the Number 1 defense when they let you do anything you damn well want to out there. That is the fifth helmet-to-helmet and leading with the helmet that I have seen from them today, and the officials have yet to call a single one out there.

StoopTroup
1/18/2009, 10:06 PM

whether or not it was intentional is moot. He launched his body like a missle, hitting the runner helmet to helmet. I don't know if there is a more textbook example. Bogus no call.

I don't believe that any player goes out there to intentionally injure anyone. I think his only intention was to separate the player from the ball. They all know they are "one play away" and there is too much money to be like a player from the 70's and before. It is a different type of player now. I respect "tough" play and feel that was an unintentional "cheap shot"...after all, he had his head down and leading with it so he had no idea where he was going to hit McGahee.

But if all the defender gets is a headache and a fine from the league office, he will take that every time for a key turnover like that.

StoopTroup
1/18/2009, 10:32 PM

blue...you lost me with the 1st statement.

It's a violent game and driven by money, fame and recognition.

There might not be Coach's actively sending headhunters in...but I'll never believe guys don't take shots at each other when they get lippy or are looking for revenge on a hit from last year or in College.

That's not the NFL I've watched for 40 years.

bluedogok
1/18/2009, 10:45 PM
I don't believe any of them go out with the intent to end the career of another player, maybe knock him out of the game but not to injure to such an extent to change someones life. I think there were some in years past that did, I just don't think those players exist in the league like they used to. That kind of hit has the chance of doing that, but I don't think his intention was something to that extent. I don't think that was exactly Jack Tatum hitting Daryl Stingley out there.

sooner59
1/18/2009, 10:48 PM
It was a brutal play, but its not like he was a QB being blindsided or a defenseless receiver trying to catch a ball. McGahee caught the ball, turned, began to run and likely saw it coming. It was just a high speed collision between a defender and ball-carrier in the open field. Yeah, he didn't have to launch his helmet into McGahee's, but in all fairness, thats not against the rules. In the NFL, "for now", a defender attempting to tackle a ball-carrier in the open field can legally hit them helmet-to-helmet. I hate to see it, but its football. Its a rough game. Too bad for the Ravens, I was hoping for Super Bowl rings for OUr former Sooners.

Ground_Attack
1/18/2009, 10:50 PM
that's pretty much my point bluedog. I don't think it was intentional either, but regardless, helmet to helmet should draw the flag. It probably wasn't intentional, but it wasn't smart. Most holds and false starts are really "intentional", just reaction. They are still penalties.

tulsaoilerfan
1/18/2009, 11:10 PM
So do you think that play would have been a penalty if it had been on a QB? I do

bri
1/19/2009, 12:38 AM
Oh, the offending party would have been taken out back and shot if it had been on a QB.

MUST...PROTECT....PRECIOUS....QUARTERBACKS.

sooner59
1/19/2009, 01:51 AM
If a QB took off with the ball and had that happen, it was their own fault for not sliding. I would be upset if they actually threw the flag. Most of the times QBs get the flag when scrambling is because they slide and the defender spears them head first. I understand trying to protect people but the NFL is losing credibility of being "actual" football with every new rule. Not that I support pounding the QB, but they just keep adding new rules. Personally, im ok with the horsecollar.

RUSH LIMBAUGH is my clone!
