View Full Version : Calling out current OU students!!

I made thread before about colleges, and I don't think anyone who currently goes to Oklahoma responded. But I ask this now because I've been doing a lot of thinking, research and now I'm 50-60% sure I want to transfer to Oklahoma. The next step would obviously (sammy B!) be to visit the campus and look around.

So I'm wondering if anyone who currently attends the university would be soo kind enough to help a fellow Sooner fan get a tour of the campus? :D

But yea, I'd appreciate it. It'd be sometime from now to Summer. Don't know. I'd probably try to come down during an Oklahoma home basketball game, so I can get a feel of how the games are too.

but yea, if anyone's down. Lemme know!

Look dillweed. Mapquest N-O-R-M-A-N, O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A and come on out. WTF do you think you need a personally guided tour and a free t-shirt and OU bookbag in order to make up your mind? It's a large public university campus in the heart of the Reddest of Red States. Lots of students. Great sports. What more do you need? A cookie? Are you Special Ed up there or something? Sheesh.

It does. You see them all the time.

"This over here is the statue of Carl Albert. And that's the Student Union. And that over there is the Nuclear Laboratory, where nothing nuclear actually happens anymore. And that's the Electronics Lab, where there aren't any electronics labs anymore. And that's the Law Building. And, in keeping with the pattern, no, law isn't taught there anymore. That there is the building where architecture is taught. Yes, it's hideous. Ironic, no?"

In Spul's defense, you can learn a lot of things about the campus and community from an average student that you might not learn from an official tour.

In Spul's defense, you can learn a lot of things about the campus and community from an average student that you might not learn from an official tour.

Exactly. I remember on the tour they gave me here, they tell you the basic stuff. Like cafeteria is here, library is here, gym is here, blah blah blah. It gave the basic stuff. But from playing sports I became friends with some of the upperclassmen. Through them I was able to find out a lot more about the campus then some tour. Found out about some nice chill spots and areas to study, short cuts to get from one building to another. Then a lot of tips and tricks on parking, best places to eat, etc. Things that aren't on the tour.

Even OU knows that, hence why they have those videos on their site with underclassmen trying to give you a feel. But there's only so much you can learn from a 10 min video.

If someone wouldn't mind, great. But if you don't want too, cool. But please keep the PMSing aimed away from me. Thanks.

On the northwest side of campus is the Fred Jones Art Museum, featuring a kind of pony thing with light up demon eyes. Look to the southeast, where you will see the bursar's office, where you will be assraped each spring by the Oklahoma Legislature."

I've never been on our official tour, but the word I've heard most often to describe it is "hokey."

I met an ADPi sophomore at summer registration prior to my fish year that did a great job at showing me around campus.

That over there is the South Oval. That big thing with flowers is the passion pit. I totally nailed a chick there.

That over there is the Blender. I can't remember what it's actually called. However, if you pledge a house on South Greek, you're pretty much going to have all your classes there. If you pledge a house on North Greek, forget that it exists, you'll never have a class there. I totally nailed a chick here, though.

Yea, man. I get what you're saying. But I plan on getting my PhD in either english or journalism. I'm keeping my grades up, doing extra curricular work, doing co-ops, so I can get into either Stanford, Columbia, or Harvard. Will be tough, but everything worth it is.

But I've read a lot about it, and getting a masters or further in Journalism, entry level pay is around 60-90,000 as a editor at a newspaper.

But I'm also minoring in creative writing, so the English gives me good solid foundation on that too. Right now I'm currently researching and working on a TV screenplay. I write short stories from time to time. Then also write for paper. And I also record my own music.

so I figure doing all that, I can make decent amount of money here and there. Throw that all together and should get me enough to provide a good life for me and my family. lol That is what I hope at least :D

But also I plan on writing a sports novel about being an intense sports fan witnessing all those heartwrenching losses then finally witnessing your team win it all for the first time. I was hoping I could start it after last week, wrote a quick article before the game that could serve as a before/after type of thing, but.... :(

Let me put it another way. Do you think someone who writes the sentence, "But nahh I don't plan on drinking. haha It's a lie to say I never had drop,..." will make $70,000 a year his first year out of college as a newspaper editor? Never mind the fact that newspaper people are getting laid off faster than you can say "spell check"?

Not that I think journalism isn't a noble calling. Just don't expect it to be a moneymaking enterprise. I would also suggest you consider ALL the writing you do, including message board posting, to be "practice." Develop good habits now, because professional journalists are Nazis about that type of thing.

Lol judging my use of grammar by message board posts? lol I can see what you're saying by using all forms of writing as practice, but I do enough writing where a little posting on a message board shouldn't throw me off course.

And as for the newspaper business, I agree. My hope is that i can achieve a columnist position similar to what Rick Reilly or Bill Simmons have. Bill Simmons racks in little over $500,000 for what he does. Currently for my sports newspaper I do a lot of opinion pieces. So that'd be the ideal position.
Yes, it'll be tough. But I'm gonna give it my all to achieve those goals.

And as far as money making enterprise, I agree with you. But like I said earlier, I'll be doing a lot of other forms of writing and my music on the side as well. I already make a little here and there with music, and hopefully I can get some of my other creative writing works to pick up.

It'll be tough, but just because the odds are against me, I'm not going to give up man.

just go. if i could get away with it, i'd go back in a second. but, i don't think my wife would allow me to go back as a freshman.

i took a 5 1/2 year break from OU to go to the navy. when my time was up, there was never any doubt i was heading back to OU. i'm never more proud than when i tell people i graduated from OU.

GO!!!!

SPuL, try the Reserve, the Commons, University Greens, and (if you really wanna spend money and live around rich chicks) Crimson Park. Those are complexes in Norman where a lot of students live.

^thanks man. Appreciate that. I like apartment living too. Be able to cook for yourself, have your own bathroom, nice quiet, etc. Best part about dorms is dropping in on those parties, and it's not like I can't do that if I live close by.
