The "Queen of Rockabilly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wanda_Jackson)" will be only the second Oklahoman elected. OKC's Charlie Christian is the other. Both of them are in the "Early Influences" category. Wanda was overlooked for a long time, and I think Elvis Costello's lobbying over the past few years had a lot to do with her finally being inducted. Originally from Maud, she attended OKC's Capitol Hill High School before she was discovered as a teenager by Hank Thompson. She still lives here in OKC.

Besides being truly the first woman rock and roll singer ever, she had the added distinction of having dated Elvis for a while, early in both of their careers.

Others inducted include Metallica, Run-D.M.C., Jeff Beck, Little Anthony and the Imperials (a personal fave), D.J. Fontana and Bill Black, both of whom played with Elvis, Bobby Womack and Spooner Oldham.

A bit of editorializing: it is unbelievable to me that Christian and Jackson are the only two Oklahomans in the RnR HOF. Off the top of my head I can think of at least Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys and also Woodie Guthrie who belong in the "Early Influences" category, alone. Seems like J.J. Cale, Hoyt Axton, and Leon Russell probably belong in the conversation too. I'm sure Rhino could help me with any I've missed.

Bob Wills & The Texas Playboys went into the Hall in '99.

Scanning the list, I'm a little surprised The Gap Band isn't in there. I mean, if you're gonna induct Earth, Wind and Fire...

No **** about Bob Wills? I stand corrected, but glad to hear it. I remember reading a while back that Charlie Christian was the only Oklahoman in the HOF. Surely it wasn't ten years ago that I read that...

Of course, whoever wrote it may have been counting Bob Wills as a Texan since he was originally from there, though by that measure Charlie Christian was a Texan too.

It's about flippin time. That chick was absolutely amazing back in the day. I saw a documentary on her that was awesome, "Nice lady with the nasty voice". I was shocked that she can STILL sing like that.

You could've known about this three days ago, if you read my blog. (http://www.oklahomarock.com/blog/?p=1418)

Jackson becomes the fifth Oklahoman act (born or adopted) to be inducted into the Hall. Woody Guthrie (http://www.rockhall.com/inductee/woody-guthrie) (1988), Charlie Christian (http://www.rockhall.com/inductee/charlie-christian) (1990) and Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys (http://www.rockhall.com/inductee/bob-wills-and-his-texas-playboys) (1999) have all been inducted as early influences. The Ventures (http://www.rockhall.com/inductee/the-ventures) were inducted in 2008 as performers.

I'm still floored by this. For a woman to be singing like that and doing what she did at the time is just unreal. Pure greatness...

Damn, I thought Elvis was said by many to be controversial in the way he performed, Wanda was pretty much the female version of him.
Her voice, was made for singing that style of music.

Congrats Wanda!
