That's awesome, but when are we going to get rid of Herm Edwards? He hasn't been fired yet has he?

I could actually see a case for giving Herm another year, especially when you look at the coaches who aren't available this year, who'll be looking for jobs next year - like Shanahan and Cowher.

Tell him if he gets us to the playoffs, he stays, if not, he's done.

Herm probably deserves another yr but I dont know if I want him around, he is a decent coach but ive never seen a team lose so many games that they had won, well except for the Thunder. I would love to get Cowher but I have been hearing that they are going after the Giants D-coord Steve Spagnola

KC has some good young talent, we need to decide if Thigpen is worth investing the future in, I like what I saw for the most part. LJ wants out so trade him and get some more picks. Trade Tony so the guy can go to the playoffs next yr which will likely be his last. It isnt as bad as it looked, the last two years the chiefs record doesnt indicate how close they were to winning. This yr I believe of their 14 losses they were winning in the 4th qt of 6 or 7 of those.

Herm's toast. Mortensen says Shanahan is KC's target:

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City Chiefs coach Herm Edwards was fired Friday. And former Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan may be in line to replace him.

Edwards was 15-34 in three seasons with the Chiefs, including 2-14 this season. He had one year remaining on his original four-year, $12 million contract.

"On behalf of my family, I want to thank Herm for his service to the Chiefs," Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said in a team statement. "After careful deliberation over the last week, Scott and I decided that it was in the best interests of the Chiefs to move forward in a different direction.

"This was not an easy decision. Herm is an outstanding football coach and a man of integrity. We appreciate his leadership over the past three seasons, and we wish him all the best in the future."

ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen reports the Chiefs have targeted former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan to replace Edwards as their next coach, according to league sources.

One source claims there have been negotiations with Shanahan and that a deal was near but another said Chiefs owner Hunt has targeted Shanahan without a clear-cut result.

Shanahan could not be reached for comment and has not responded to text message inquiries. A Chiefs spokesman had no comment.

An NBC-TV affiliate in Kansas City reported Shanahan as a possibility at midweek but a team source and a source close to Shanahan either denied or downplayed the story. A Chiefs official told Mortensen on Friday night that he did not believe Shanahan would be the team's next coach. The official fell short of entirely ruling it out.

Adam Schefter of the NFL Network, who once covered the Broncos and co-authored a book with Shanahan, is reporting that there is no chance he will be the next Chiefs coach.

A league official noted that there was "no way" the Chiefs could be negotiating or near a deal with Shanahan because the team must comply with the Rooney Rule that requires interviewing minority candidates. The source said Hunt would be the last owner not to comply.

However, a league source said that Hunt has focused on Shanahan after hiring Scott Pioli as the team's general manager. The source said Hunt did research on the last 19 coaches who have been hired in the NFL and determined their average salary to range between $2 million and $3 million, which would be an acceptable proposal by the NFL Management Council. Broncos owner Pat Bowlen would be obligated to pay the balance of Shanahan's three-year contract at approximately $6.5 million per year.

Edwards' status has been in doubt since Pioli was hired on Jan. 13. Asked at his introductory news conference about Edwards' status, Pioli declined to say.

"Since my arrival last week, Herm and I have had several conversations as part of my overall evaluation of the football operation," Pioli said in a statement. "After careful consideration, Clark and I felt that it was best to make a change. What I conveyed last week in the press conference I still believe to be true -- Herm is a great man and a tremendous football coach. He respects the game and the league, and he is passionate about his players and his craft.

"Over the course of this last week, I have also spent time meeting and visiting with most of the assistant coaches, and I will continue to do so over the next several days. All of the coaches from last year's staff, with the exception of one, are under contract through the 2009 season."

Edwards was 41-44 in five seasons as head coach of the New York Jets, including three trips to the playoffs.

Edwards came to Kansas City from the Jets and made the playoffs in his first season, when the team was 9-7. But he was under fire after the team finished 4-12 in 2007. Team management gave him its support, but expected a run at the playoffs. Instead, the team went 2-14.

"I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Hunt Family for the opportunity to spend nine seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs," Edwards said in a statement. "It has truly been an honor and a privilege to serve as the head coach of 'Lamar's Team' the past three seasons.

"This is going to be a very good football team. The support of Chiefs fans across the country has been tremendous. They are truly passionate about their football team. Chiefs fans will be proud to cheer for this team for many years to come. With the tremendous nucleus of young talent on this roster, I sincerely believe that his team is poised to do great things. I respect the tough decision that was made to move in a new direction. I wish the players and the organization the very best as they move forward."

In Edwards' three seasons in Kansas City, only three teams had worse records: Detroit, Oakland and St. Louis.

Prior to joining the Jets, Edwards spent five seasons serving as assistant head coach/defensive backs coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, working under head coach Tony Dungy. Edwards served as a scout for Kansas City from 1990 to '91 before joining Marty Schottenheimer's staff as defensive backs coach ('92-94).

I don't know that that isn't a bad thing, lets be honest...under Shanahan how many years have they taken a RB in the draft when it was not needed?
Or traded for one/two when they have a stable of workable guys already within the team?

The defense isn't bad, some tuning up could help especially at the ends and safeties(from what i've watched of them)but the offense couldn't score on a trio of 3yr old kids.

I heard today that some nutjob thinks Bomar will make a superior QB in the NFL. Yeah, that was on Fox radio...so take that for what it's worth...not much. "He has the size/speed/and quick release but he needs to work on a softer touch and to not overthrow the ball......"

Duh, no ****? We said the same thing when he was here.
Read:Bomar selected #126 by the Tampa Bay Bucs....I can see it now.

Or Chiefs, dear lord....my dad loves the team and I have a soft spot for them for some reason and I hope they don't venture down that road.

Getting rid of Edwards was a step in the right direction. There is a lot of talk about Shanahan taking over, but there is also talk of OC Chan Gailey. Lots of young talent on this team. They need to grab another QB - Thigpen and Croyle are not the answer, DE - to replace Jared Allen, and TE - because Tony G only as a season or two left. Shore up the Oline and Dline and they compete for the conference in two years.

A couple of things KC, Gailey has no shot, nor does Shanny from what I hear but that is by his own choice. 2nd, I wouldnt suggest wasting a qb pick in this years draft unless it is 4th rd or later, give Tyler another year to see how he develops and get a qb next year if need be.

Also, if you can get anything for him, trade TG, he deserves to play for a winner in his last few years. Also, get rid of LJ...he doesnt want to be here and weve all seen that RB's can be found quite easily, get all the draft picks we can

Yeah, we don't have any receivers.....

We still have TG and Bowe just had a 1000 yd season with no qb and only his 2nd year in the league

Is Bradley still with the Chiefs?

It was good move for them, the reports that I have read (KC and Boston) said that when the Pats franchised him, they were going to have to trade him or have more than 25% of total salary tied up in two QB's. So the Pats didn't have the leverage that they had hoped to get a better deal. It was better than just letting him go for a compensatory pick that would be no higher than end of the third round.

So now what, with the #3 pick do we go after the best Defensive prospect in Curry, do we get an o-lineman so Cassel doesnt die this yr, or do we trade down for extra picks?

I would prefer trading down as long as we can still get an o-lineman in the mid to late first round

Mixer!
3/2/2009, 08:13 PM
Convential wisdom says if there's an outstanding pick when it's your turn, you take him. So grab Curry and try to package some extra players up to trade for picks.

The Chefs were the backup deal. The 3 way with Denver and Tampa would have been a better net deal for the Patriots, but Denver wasn't going to get what they thought was enough compensation for Cutler. The Pats would have been sitting pretty with 2 2nd rounders instead of the one they got from the Chefs.

Collier11
3/3/2009, 10:06 AM
actually all reports say that Denver came in too late after KC and NE already had agreed on the deal

This guy lists the Chiefs as an outside contender, this is a pretty good write up.

5. The Kansas City Chiefs

Offense: It sounds insane to even have the Chiefs on this list, considering the franchise only won two games last season. But the utter disrepair that occurred under former coach Herm Edwards had a lot to do with two things: the quarterback and the discipline. And general manager Scott Pioli took major swings at both of those problems by replacing Edwards with Todd Haley, an offensive mind who is a strict disciplinarian, and trading for quarterback Matt Cassel, who has the potential to immediately solidify this unit. Despite the lack of success, it is not an offense that lacks talent. Running back Larry Johnson, when properly motivated, is still a top-10 talent at his position. The offensive line already has its young franchise left tackle, Branden Albert, in place. And the skill positions are good enough to offer a serviceable passing game with the likes of tight end Tony Gonzalez and wideouts Dwayne Bowe and Mark Bradley. In short, it’s a unit that isn’t completely starting from scratch. It should be good enough to be middle of the pack as it is, and could be exponentially better if Johnson remains on the roster and can be brought around by the motivation tactics of Haley and assistant coach Maurice Carthon.

Defense: There still isn’t an official defensive coordinator, but there continues to be speculation in personnel circles that former Browns coach Romeo Crennel could eventually get the nod. If that doesn’t happen, it could go to Clancy Pendergast, who is on staff but hasn’t been given an official title yet. Without Jared Allen wreaking havoc on the other side, defensive end Tamba Hali was an utter disaster last season. The new coaching staff has to determine if that was an aberration and whether the former first-round pick can be salvaged by putting better pieces around him. Defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey had a lukewarm first year, but like most dominant interior linemen he should see dramatic improvement from this point forward. Linebacker Derrick Johnson should be very solid if he stays in the middle, particularly with Dorsey improving in front of him. The addition of linebacker Mike Vrabel will provide some desperately needed leadership amongst the front seven. Without Allen’s emotion, it was simply a flat group last season. Cornerback Brandon Flowers was a nice young addition who should fit well with the new regime.

Work to be done: Where to start? There is a ton of shuffling yet to be completed. Many of the coaches on staff still don’t have a title, and Haley is believed to have just recently finished his film evaluation of the current roster. That means virtually everything is still in flux, including the team’s base defensive alignment. Indeed, there are more questions than answers right now. But the top three to be figured are: (1) Find a defensive coordinator with whom both Haley and Pioli are comfortable, and take a hard step forward with the scheme. (2) Settle on the third overall draft pick, which could be traded or used on Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry, who would go a long way toward helping shore up the team’s front seven. (3) Make a decision with Larry Johnson, whose status is still up in the air.

Bottom line: It would be staggering to see this team turn it all around in one season, and mind-blowing for a Super Bowl run to occur. But the team does have a nice talent base to work with, and Pioli has shown the ability to go on amazing hot streaks where talent acquisition is concerned. If Cassel solves a lot of the offensive problems … and Larry Johnson gets his head screwed on straight … and Haley and Pioli get this team disciplined quickly … who knows what can happen. Especially considering the ties of Haley and Pioli to the school of Bill Parcells, whose methods worked wonders in only one season in Miami.
