If you are talking about a horse, I believe the generally accepted practice is to shoot it.

We have a 17 week old bichon (2lb.8oz)that is just a great puppy. She has PRAA (Persistant right aortic arch) as confirmed by a barium xray. Surgery to correct is around 2000-2500.00 I am wondering if that seems right and if anyone has any advise regarding the success/failure rate of this type of surgery. I would hate to pay so much and have her not make it anyway.

We wanted to see if a teaching hospial would like to take on the case because we just don't know wether to invest that much in a puppy. She is really lively and fun but I am afraid we are going to have to put her down as much as I don't want to.

Any suggestions?

Heh.

Hypothesis: This is a duck.
Materials: Feathered animal we think is a duck. Pokin' stick. Hallway. Duck food.
Test: 1. Does it quack like a duck? We poked the feathered animal, and it did, indeed quack.
2. Does it walk like a duck? After placing the feathered animal at one end of the hallway and the duck food at the other end of the hallway, it did indeed walk like ducks have been observed to walk.
Conclusion: It walks like a duck and quacks like a duck. It is, indeed, a duck to all significant degrees.

I don't care, it made me laugh.

As much as I dislike stoolwater, I had a very sick Schnauzer a few years ago. My vet sent me to the osu animal hospital, and they were fantastic. They informed me of their diagnosis and told me up front what my costs would be for the treatment. I had to pay half up front. My dog was in ICU for 4 days and the student vet called me 3 times daily. If I have to cheer for anything at osu, the animal hospital was top notch. I would give them a call.

85,

Spoke with a Dr. at the teaching hospital. Most likely the odds of the dog surviving without the surgery is grim. The price does not seem out of line for that type of surgery, and that particular surgery is fairly uncommon and much more difficult to perform on such a small animal. So, there are really no survival statistics. As for teaching hospital being cheaper, They said not really, and not on a surgery like that for sure.

Sorry man, I wish I had better news.
