Question about the draft?

I admit to knowing little to nothing about the ins and outs of pro football. I am a college football fan and thats just about it. I thought I remembered a player being drafted a few years ago and he(maybe Eli Manning?) refused to play for the team that drafted him? Have I been hit in the head or did something like this happen? How? Does that happen often?

both Elway & Eli Manning made it well know that if drafted they would not play for the team that picked them. IIRC it was San Diego that drafted Manning & ended up trading him right away to NY.

Yup.

Elway was drafted by the Colts and said he'd go play baseball instead.

Manning was drafted #1 by the Chargers and traded for Philip Rivers and Shawne Merriman.

And no, this doesn't happen very often. You have to have the right combination of circumstances where the player can afford to sit out a year.
