did or did not the OU helmet logo change for one year sometime in the 90's to a 'squattier' version instead of the paperclip version.....????

Oklahoma switched from white helmets to crimson ones for the 1966 season, which also marked the debut of the traditional interlocking "OU" logo, which was "rounder" in shape for the first season than the "block" version which appeared the following year and has been used ever since. There have been some minor changes to the logo during the intervening years.

A change to the shade of "crimson" used on the helmets was made sometime around 1977, the earlier color having been basically "red", and I believe the facemasks were also changed from gray to white at about the same time. Apparently white facemasks were not added to all helmets at the same time; there may have been some seasons in which both white and gray facemasks were used simultaneously by different players. The helmets have remained essentially unchanged since about 1977, aside from a switch to "metallic" paint for the 2000 season.

*1 Oklahoma used white helmets during their first game of the 2003 season, a home game against North Texas, as part of a plan to wear uniforms "similar to those worn during the Bud Wilkinson era of the 1950's at OU."

The helmet logo didn't change, but the midfield logo did, briefly. I think it was in 2001 or 2002 though.

seems like i had heard that schnelly tried to change the logo but met some stiff opposition ????......also, setem, thanks for info about the white helmet game...i had been wondering when that was.....i knew sooners played a 'throwback' game but couldnt remember when or against who

I don't know if they changed it on the helmet or not. Back in the mid-90's, they did change the logo to a "square" slightly canted OU. I think it was Snelly that did it. When they built the Switzer center, that square logo was built in to the floor.

As far as I remember the helmet has always had pretty much the same logo. I think there might have been a few players that had a "concussion helmet" in the 70's which had a smaller round logo, I think Steve Rhodes wore one. It had what looked like a cap on top of the existing shell.

That "leaning logo" abomination was around when I was in school. The basketball team used it but I don't think the football team ever did.

The logo on the helmets never changed. The "Turbo OU" logo was everywhere in the 90's, but it never made it onto the helmets.
