I know it would be hard to tell before the bcs era but i was just wondering which team has lost the most games when given that winning would make them the nation championship...i know we have won our fair share but id be willing to bet we have lost the most to hahaha we should have like 12

I don't know the exact numbers but as well as winning the most majors in golf Jack Nicklaus has finished second the most as well. It happens. You play in big games and you lose some of them...sometimes more than you win.

I know Bama got short changed a few times. 1966 and 1977 just to name 2.

There's probably close to 100 teams that have NEVER had the chance to play in one as well.....let alone lose one....

Impossible to tell, because we have no sure way of knowing how the AP would have voted if the outcome of bowls was different.

My response is simple: North Texas has lost fewer national title games as OU. So has Texas. So what?

Miami won titles in 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991, 2001

They played for titles they did not win in 1985, 1986, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1994 and 2002.

Off the top of my head, OU would have been champs in 1978, 1984, 1987, 2003, 2004, and 2008 by winning its bowl game.

Are you saying the 1977 season with the 1978 Orange Bowl which they lost to Arkansas? Yeah, they could have possibly won that season without the bowl loss.

They did win their bowl game in the 1978 season (1979 Orange Bowl) by beating Nebraska in a rematch. It was the OU-Nebraska loss which cost them the shot at the title and created the rematch.

All the great teams when it comes to traidtion have lost a lot of chances to win the NC.

ND, OU, OSU, Michigan, UN, Bama, USC, etc have lost their fair share of NC titles.

Losing a big one isn't as bad as not ever going to one IMO.

Yeah, I should have said 1977.

I believe it is to show the naysayers that the more MNCs you play for, the more of them you will lose. Ya win some and ya lose some, but if you don't ever play in them, you will never win them. While it sounds so simple (and it is), some fans in the heat of the moment after our recent loss, have been unable to see it.

OU has won titles in 1950, 1955, 1956, 1974, 1975, 1985, 2000.

OU could have won the MNC in 1915, 1918, 1949, 1953, 1954, 1957, 1958, 1967, 1973, 1978, 1986, 2003, 2004, 2008.

Blows what Miami U has done out of the water.

throw out 1915 and 1918 since national titles were not awarded then. 1954 and 1957 were split title years so basically OU was on the outside looking in and titles were awarded before the bowls. Same with 1958 and it was either LSU or Iowa and LSU got it.
