January 7, 1892: Mine explodes in Oklahoma

117 years ago today, a massive mine explosion leaves nearly 100 dead in Krebs, Oklahoma, in 1892. The disaster, the worst mining catastrophe in Oklahoma’s history, was mainly due to the mine owner’s emphasis on profits over safety.

Southeastern Oklahoma was a prime location for mining at the turn of the 19th century. Much of the land belonged to and was leased from Choctaws and thus was exempt from U.S. federal government laws and regulations.

Although the mining company’s indifferent attitude toward safety was well-known, there were more than enough immigrants in the area willing to work in the dangerous conditions at the Krebs mine, where most miners were of Italian and Russian descent.

Krebs, Oklahoma - 1910 - Salvatore & Angela Mantegna are on the right, with their first child, Signorino (Henry). Family on the left is Guiseppe & Carmella Randazzo, Salvatore's closest friend, and their daughter, Ellen. Both men were coal miners working the most dangerous mines in the world. The mine operators solicited Sicilians from Calascibetta to coal. Even today, McAlester has a rich, Italian heritage...with a big Italian Festival each Memorial Day weekend

The Osage Coal & Mining Company’s No. 11 mine was notorious for its poor conditions. This led to a high turnover of workers, and the company routinely hired unskilled labor, providing little in the way of training to get them up to speed. This was true for even the most dangerous jobs, like handling explosives and munitions.

In the early evening of January 7, several hundred workers were mining the No. 11 mine when an inexperienced worker accidentally set off a stash of explosives. Approximately 100 miners were burned or buried in the explosion. Another 150 workers suffered serious injuries. Nearly every household in Krebs was directly affected by the tragedy.

Between 1885 and 1934 at least 144 mining deaths occurred in the course of Osage operations. The Great Depression triggered in 1929 caused the company to shut down the mines at Krebs and auction its equipment.

It wasn’t until 2002 that the victims of the Krebs mining disaster were honored by a memorial built at the site of the old mine.

Wow! I had no idea. Krebs is also home to Pete's Place (http://www.petes.org/), where you can find some quality grub, especially if you've been camping for a week.

Didn't you ever wonder why one variety of Choc beer from Krebs, OK is called "Miners' Mishap?"

found it:

It has been long rumored there was a mine cave-in near rural Wister (OK) in 1904 that trapped ten Chinese immigrant laborers and a brace of mules. As the story goes, the mules were saved because they were worth 27.00 each at the time. There is absolutely no evidence this event ever occurred and it is merely a tale told by snipe hunters and back-slapping good old boys over cold beer and dominoes.:D

I am very familiar with that explosion and several others. My great grandfather, who lived with us when I was growing up, quit school in the 3rd grade to go work for that company. Somehow he managed to live through a lot of explosions and was one tough old man. They told him he had cancer in '63 and would live 6 months. He died at the age of 92 30 years later. Where we grew up, and still where a lot of my family live, is where a lot of the mining happened.

My grandma told me that everyday in the evening, the whole family would gather in front of their house to see if they could see my great grandpa coming home from the mine down the road...and he made it out each and every time.

Little humor to this story...My great great grandfather was a survivor of that mine explosion..however he cheated on his wife and tried to leave her with 8 kids..couple of months after this explosion they found him dead due to some poisoning he had received courtesy of her.
