If you've ever considered it...

We "adopted" a young infant girl in Equador in the 1980's and supported her until she was 17. Many, many letters and much school-work was sent and it felt quite rewarding.

Sometime during her 17th year, we received a letter stating that she had violated the rules/values(?) of CCF and had to be released as a beneficiary. This was very sad to us as we had considered going to visit.

We accepted that there are certainly boundaries and the 17 year relationship was pretty darn cool.

We didn't adopt another child as life got in the way in my own family.

Just wanted to share an experience if anyone is interested.

Along a similar vein, I'm a big fan of Kiva.org where you can lend money to entreprenuers in developing countries. While not helping children directly, I figure that helping folks raise food and start businesses will help children indirectly.

Mrs. Rogue loves kiva.
There's a funny t-shirt they have that says, "will you help me buy a goat" or some such.

FWIW, I'm not a fan of the OK based "Feed The Children" group.
I liked it in the military and still love going through the book when it's time to do the Combined Federal Campaign every year.

Everything was through CCF. We knew the village but not the address.

Sorry guys but i can't trust organizations like CCF that spend so much time and money advertising their cause. Who's really receiving the money? I just don't trust'em.

I generally check with these guys first:

www.charitynavigator.org

They give pretty high marks to CCF.

$.82 cents on the dollar goes toward the cause for CCF. 2 execs over $120k in compensation. I think I stick with my local charities.

Thanks for the link Homey!

Sorry this became more about me, but the truth is...about the time Aida was being "moved along", my ex was about to become my ex. Things got in the way, Homer. CCF did nothing to discourage the visit that never happened.

We started in the early '80's and it was primarily a leap in Faith to trust the organization, which also was promoting Faith. We didn't have websites to check but again, our experience was a very good one and CCF appeared to do exactly what they claim they do. It was very cool to get photos of Aida growing up and all her letters were sent handwritten and a copy of the translation came with it.

I'm glad you had a good experience LB, I focus close to home and put in 6 to 10 hours a week helping the local community. I get a lot of satisfaction knowing the folks I'm helping. they are mainly veterans and current active duty families.

Do what feels right to you!

OKC's Feed The Children, 3 execs (all related I believe) over 150k.
No, sir, I don't like it.

I too favor helping local folks when possible. These guys get a lot of my time and some of my money. Only two stars, but I've spent enough time there over the years to know there's no funny bidness going on. For one thing, they are spread out in too many facilities around Tulsa because the NIMBY's oppose a consolidated facility at one location and the economies of scale that would make possible.

Since we all see the CCF adverts, I thought someone would benefit from my own experience.

I do support local organizations as well:

17 year old girl... think she got pregnant out of wedlock? Just speculation, but that's probably what happened if I had to fathom a guess.

I usually like to stick to local charities because you can see the effects of your donations first-hand. I always do the United Way thing through my employer, because Girls Scouts is a beneficiary (was one not too long ago). I heard from longer-term employees that they used to have to watch a 30-minute infomercial if they chose not to donate :D They discontinued this shortly before I arrived.

Perhaps Baj, but that seems like a harsh disqualifier...she'd need more Christian help and support.

No, we stopped speculating. She may have run off with a fella...I hope she is doing well.

I find the beef with compensation interesting. I would like to see the number of organizations with a billion dollars worth of assets paying their CEO 200k. My guess is the number is not very high.

Then your guess would be very, very wrong.
