UF beat: Defense is in for an OU track meet
December 20, 2008
by Brain Steele

Florida's defense might want to start running track to get ready for the national-title game.

UF's matchup with Oklahoma won't be the slow and grinding type of game that the SEC title game against Alabama was. The Sooners run a no-huddle offense, far different from the Crimson Tide's grind-it-out offense, and it will affect the way the Gators substitute on the defensive side.

"It makes it tough," UF defensive line coach Dan McCarney said. "You're going to have to [substitute] in between series. You're going to have do it during a timeout or when a ball goes out of bounds. ... You see guys back on their heels, not even ready [when they play Oklahoma]."

Safeties Coach Chuck Heater, who has been relying on a three-man rotation of Major Wright, Will Hill and Ahmad Black, knows he'll need a lot of snaps out of all three.

"You got to be ready and get your call in quickly," Heater said. "You got to be careful when you're substituting because you could have too many guys."

Good thing Florida is so fast or otherwise the subs might get left on the sideline.

They can have 3 extra men on the field and get by with it because they are so fast the refs won't see them running..

All year long teams have been trying to adjust to Oklahoma's tempo. They often try to practice at an even faster pace than our game tempo in order to condition their players and to be ready for our game speed. They have all failed miserably. One key problem is that they can't simulate the high quality of all our athletes (and the huge depth at all positions) and the flawless execution of our players. They can practice all they want, but nothing they do will prepare them for real game situation against our offense.

Chuck Heater sounds like a porno name.

Maybe a bad cop show.

This will maybe only resonate with the people who have kids, but I keep envisioning that kid "Dash" from the movie the Incredibles whenever I hear about the speed of the UF defense.

Was it the TCU game where there were several 1st quarter calls with illegal substitutions? Their D didn't know whether to scratch their watch or wind their azz.

Florida guys, this is real. You might have all the team speed in the world but you've never seen football played this fast.

I saw this posted before and I agree, one thing that will hurt us in the tempo of the game is all of the TV timeouts. There are usually a million of them, so this will be in UF's favor.
