They aren't going away. There seems to be no groundswell to be rid of them, at least at OU, where it counts. Little Red is but a distant memory. I think the TV coverage has shown more of the Horsepigs lately than they used to. They don't offend me as much as in the past! WHAT'S WRONG, HERE???

My 2 y.o. absolutely loves Horsepigs, is totally transfixed during the bball games. I have also come to terms with the Horsepigs, they are here to stay.

My loathing has been almost replaced with ambivalence towards them.

I use to yell 'horsepig' and act like I was dying anytime they showed up on TV. (just to be an assnozzle goofball...and act like it was the kiss of death)

At the start of the year, I still kind of disliked them....but now....Im starting to accept them too. They look a lot better then before, and sometimes they look pretty athletic on the sidelines, and even look kind of funny (forgive me, father lord)

So, yes. Spek to RLIMC.

I'm going to ask a totally nOObish question. And by all means flame me all you want if you think it's going to increase your sperm count.

But did the phrase "Horsepig" originate from this site? If not who and where?

Increase my sperm count. LOL

Yea, Im pretty sure it originated from here. It was at least 2 years ago. Not sure from who though. Cause they looked like Horses that were pigs before they fixed the costumes several times.

Once you are over the age of, let's say nine... then, if you still "accept the horsepigs," then you are dead to me. (Bump it up to eleven for kids that don't get out much.)

I wish with all my wish that we could have Top Dawg back for 100 percent of all sports, but I know it won't happen :(

Thus, at least we still have that one game at LNC last year where they honored the 1988 team with a brief cameo.

:( I so incredibly miss Top Dawg.

n00b alert! ;)

I'll be nice because you seem nice :) Top Dawg (also called Top Daug, because then there's an O and a U to interlock, I kid you not!) was discontinued in fall 2005. Top Dawg/Daug's last basketball season was 2005. OU went out in the first round for women. I don't remember what happened with the men. NIT, I think. Thus, an uneventful end to everyone's favorite costumed mascot - favorite mascot is still, by far, our little bandwagon that we all wish we could jump on :D

Top Dawg was replaced by two "ponies," whom were named "Boomer" and "Sooner" in fall 2005, first unveiled at the Big Red Rally before the opening football game. They were immediately farked and hounded by OU fans and opposition alike. We nicknamed them the "horsepigs" for their pig-like appearance.

Since then, they undergone two revisions - one that made them look more like dragons, and another that you see around now.

However, for us old folk (haha, I'm only 25) that have fond memories of seeing Top Dawg urinate on the Stanford Tree while dancing circles around opposing mascots wagging its ears, we want our dawg back :(

Here's Top Dawg at the 1988 tribute last season. You can see the current "Horsepig" in the background.

Someone already posted the original Horsepigs, so I'm not going to post another pic of their ugliness here

Here is the second version, which came out one season after the originals. Note the red hair

I was fine with the horsepigs until they started getting raunchy on the field. The past few home games they have had wrestling matches after touchdowns that look, well, a little disturbing. ;)

My vote would go to a covered wagon drawn by a couple of ponies--which was apparently satisfactory to everyone for at least a couple decades or so.

However, I cannot for the life of me understand how "sooner" = horsepigs.

I'm open to a rational explanation, however. Bring it on.

Yes, I believe the lovely and talented BSG is the original source of the term "Horsepig."Wrong.

BRING BACK MEX!!!!Mex is buried somewhere underneath the stadium, and no it was not BSG who coined the phrase "Horsey pigs." The nic name for the mascots originated from a father who told the story about how he and his little girl attended a the game together. She spotted them and said "Look Daddy, Horsey Pigs!"... and it stuck.

I agree, the schooner was fine, but as previously stated in this thread, we have fuzzy mascots and they're not leaving no matter what. So, how would YOU do it better?

Crucifax Autumn
12/14/2008, 01:42 AM
When I was a kid I didn't need any stupid horsepigs to keep me entertained. I watched the games without them every week and loved seeing the Schooner come out.

I watched the game and the players and was always proud to be a fan and enjoyed the schooner because no one else had anythink like it, much like now.

There is absolutely no reason to have something different "for the kids". Little boys have always liked wagons and so on and little girls have always liked ponies.

I didn't care for them much until they hassled Pistol Pete last year. Then the Pokes whined and cried about how Pete was mishandled so I decided maybe they weren't so bad after all. This year they knocked the Jayhawk off the retaining wall and that did it for me. They can stay as far as I'm concerned!

If their new mission is to wreck havoc, instead of to be cutesy human dolls, then count me in on their bandwagon.
