OK, according to friends from here in Atlanta, I've lived over 30 years on this planet and have not had a correct interpretation of what constitutes a second and third cousin... or maybe I have and people in Georgia are wrong. Here is what I have believed:

Ted and I are cousins. Our mothers are sisters. Ted has a kid, which makes me that kids second cousin. My kid is Teds second cousin. The relationship of our children to one another is third cousins.

Now from what I was told last night, this is not correct. For the first time in my life, I heard the term "cousins once removed". So now, apparently this is how it shakes out:

Ted and I are cousins. Our mothers are sisters. Ted has a kid, which makes me that kids cousin-once-removed. My kid is Teds cousin-once-removed. The relationship of our children to one another is second cousins.

So where do we go from here? What would Teds grandkid and my kid be? Cousins twice removed and then both grandkids would be the third cousins?

Whats the deal?

In Arkansas they call them "available".

It is the south, I think the "removed" part comes from the being removed from the "not date-able" pool. If you have a "removed" in there, that means they are available.....

I always thought my aunt's kids are my cousins and my great-aunt's kids are my second cousins.

This is not a criticism but I'm surprised how often people get second/third cousins mixed up.

To me the most obvious definition (second/third cousins are from the same generation just as first cousins) is the correct one.

Nope. That's what I had thought for years. Your great Aunts kids are your first cousins, once removed. That's what I had thought but according to genealogy.com, the once removed is legit and the sharing of generations is what qualifies for first, second, and so on. Your great Aunts grandkids are your second cousins.
