I have a co-worker that has a family member who is "suppossedly" familiar with the discussions, he is indicating that an offer has been made as well.

I would post his cell number for more calls as I am upset that he is even considering but we are pretty tight so I guess I won't

So how was that 3 pm presser with Venables going to Clemson?

well when I talked to Kevin he kinda implied that while he wants to be a head coach that Miss. State is probably not what he wants. he doesn't wanna end up like Chuck Long. However they have put a sweet offer out there

Between $2 and $2.5 million per year, four years guaranteed. Yeah, that's pretty sweet.

He does NOT want to go to MS State. I just left that area of MS, and he would have the left overs when it comes to recruits after the upper tier of SEC schools choose, i.e. Florida, LSU, Alabama, Auburn and now Ole Miss.

Are you saying Miss St is going to use their Katrina money and some Bail Out money to hire Wilson? Otherwise, I don't see how they can afford him.

Sylvester Croom was making $1.7 million per year, FWIW.

Maybe Miss St should hold out to see what KW's "offense" can do against a real D like he'll see week in and week out in the greatest conference in the history of the universe. Once our O gets completely shut down in Miami, maybe they'll have second thoughts...

KW KNOWS he is a hot commodity,he will hold OUt for a top job(miami,Georgia,Auburn,Tennessee,Nebraska,ND).Ye s I know all those teams have coaches already,I am just saying that is the level of job I think he waits for.

Congrats to KW. I'd worry a little more about losing him if it wasn't for Norvell on the staff which I think is our ace in the hole for Jan 8 if KW gets a head-coaching gig. I'd be worried a helluva lot more if since Bob is a defensive specialist if it our offense was left to Josh, Cale, Shipp and Patton. Although I'm sure they're all qualified, Norvell has been an OC at 2 previous stops. With the way the economy is on the downturn, I can't say that I would blame him if Miss. State would guarantee around 1.5 mil for 4 years, even if Miss.St is the Big 12's Iowa State of the SEC. He probably should take the money and do what's best for his family unless of course another school like Auburn gets interested.

With respect:

1. Florida hardly ever gets a player from Mississippi.
2. Auburn is in danger of setting their program back 5 years at the moment. Yeah we fired Croom, but his offenses averaged 108 in the nation over 5 years - it would be hard for us to do worse. Auburn fired a great coach in Tubbs - it is going to be hard for them to do better.
3. Ole Miss landed a great coach in Nutt, but he has always (going back to ARK) had the tag of being a lazy recruiter. Look at Nutts' class this year after their breakout season - his class is ranked around 45 and MSU's is ranked in the 20s. Our AD (who has been calling our commitments) has out recruited Nutt since Croom was fired!!!
4. It is a fact that Bama gets a few studs from MS each year and LSU pretty much owns the Mississippi Gulf Coast, but Jackie proved that you can win at MSU. We have TOP NOTCH facilities and we are willing to increase his salary by 8 times (from $225K to $2 Mil).

Nutt is surely a horrible recruiter. Just ask Darren McFadden, Felix Jones, and Matt Jones.

I didn't realize that Miss.St. had top notch facilities and just figured they were like Okie State w/o T-Bone nor did I realize that 2 mil was in the equation. I can't see how he could turn that down if it's guaranteed for several years unless Miss St tries to make up for it by low-balling his future assistant's salaries to make up for it.

Good point, thanks.

Darren McFadden and Matt Jones were both from Arkansas. The University of Arkansas is the only major university in the state, so recruiting to the "only game in town" shouldn't be too hard. Mississippi has roughly the same population as Arkansas (if not less), but we have two SEC schools in MSU and Ole Miss, as well as USM (C-USA). Between MSU, Bama, LSU, and USM - Nutt will not fare as well in securing talent similar to what he brought to Arkansas.

If I remember correctly Felix Jones was a 2* recruit and was not highly recruited. So although Nutt deserves credit for his evaluation of Jones, I don't think that he won any recruiting battles to sign him.

Thanks to ESPN's new SEC TV contract ($40 Billion over 15 years) our share of the league's TV revenue will go from $5 Million per year to $15 Million per year (starting next year). Plus we were left a large sum ($100 Million +) by an alumini who passed on a few weeks back. So I wouldn't expect a low salery for Wilson or any assistants that he hired.

Felix Jones was a pretty good back playing Tulsa high school ball. I think the only reason OU didn't try to recruit him was because we had a guy named Adrian Peterson.

$8 million guaranteed over four years would persuade me. I suspect he'll be given free reign over how things are run.

This was addressed on the Sports Animal today.

Al Eschbach talked like he knew something but could not say. However he did say this... He did not think Wilson would take it because coaches take jobs because 1) they have a chance to win or 2) it is a stepping stone to another, better job.

Only 1 coach since 1955 has left the school with a winning record. That coach was Darrel Royal. Likewise Miss state really does not have a powerhouse record and they are not much of a stepping stone to somewhere else.

Have you got a link to that figure being offered KW or is this just rumored fan speculation? or does that 2 mil figure include all of the possible bonuses such as winning the SEC west, winning the SEC title game, winning the NC, etc, etc. I find it hard to believe that a 1st year head coach would get that kind of guaranteed gravy when an established coach like Leach has just been offered a little above 2 mil a year to remain at Tech.

Jackie Sherrill only had a 50% win record over his career from 1991-2001. MSU's record from 1922 to today is still under 50% (.481) Their best streak was from 1939-1948. That was when most of the boys were off fighting in WWII.

I always find it amusing that with McFadden and Jones as well as current Denver Bronco Peyton Hillis in the backfield last season, Arkansas won fewer games than MSU did. That's classic Nutt in a nutshell (no pun intended) for you, one of the most overrated coaches in all of college football. Again, just wait till Orgeron's studs leave the roost, we'll see how good Nutty has it in Oxford.

As someone who pulled for MSU when Croom was there, I hope you guys hit a home run with your hire, whether its KW or somebody else.

I think the wise thing to do would be wait for the impending national championship with the highest scoring team of all time, take 'em right back next year, and accept an offer from a better team but with the agreement that he starts the new job in january after the bcs championship game.

Big money, big respect.

we (Miss State) are willing to increase his salary by 8 times (from $225K to $2 Mil).

As Croom was reportedly getting $1.7m per year, seems reasonable they would bump that a bit, considering that the SEC is coaching up right now.

Anybody remember when Leach bolted to Tech? Interviewed, withdrew is his name, tearfully resigned from OU? The arguments on the Sooner boards at that time were:

"Heck, he's offered $750k for 5 years, he has to take that. If he gets fired, he can be an OC anywhere..."

Well, that's worked out OK for Mikey. If I was K Wilson, no way would I turn down the $2m if it was a five year contract.

That is too much money and too much financial security to say no to.

Cruci, that sounds good to me, but as devil's advocate -- "take 'em right back next year" may be a tall order.

The O-line starts coming apart (due to graduation) next year, our running backs are in flux, and we might lose Sammy.

Seems like something of a rebuilding year for the O, and a MAJOR rebuilding year if Sammy jumps.

We would still contend for the Big XII, but it's hard to see how we could put up staggering offensive numbers again.

i think this might be KW's time to punch his ticket.

Just for the sake of accuracy, you don't remember correctly. Jones was a 4* recruit.

Yes, but didn't they ban him from killing and maiming any animals resembling opponent's mascots after the steer de-balling?

(Which in my personal mythology is one of the funniest "ways we beat Texas" stories in college football)

I do know that the AD and asst. AD at state were in KC this weekend, they also were in Dallas on Monday. by hearing what readers are commenting on, they would love Kevin Wilson to come and yes, MS State does have the money to pay him due to the fact the fan base wants to win and win now. would he take it? he wouldn't return calls to the paper down here to discuss it but overall, i don't know if he would. all i know is the fan base here wants an offensive minded coach, besides that, they really don't care. if you have watched state the past few years, you can understand.
