Ian Bothwell, a 63-year-old Briton had a highly distinctive habit of picking his nose, which was a poor choice for his health. Bothwell`s habit cost him his life, because he picked his nose so much that he bled out to death, Telegraph writes.
- There is no explanation for this death other than he died from a nose-bleed, consistent with picking his nose. I do not think for a moment he knew what he was doing was going to cause his death - a Manchester coroner said.
The pathologist subsequently concluded that Bothwell suffered from dementia brought on by alcoholism, which is why he picked his nose until he died.
Alcoholism + picking nose = death
The building supervisor in which Bothwell lived found the tenant on the floor and thought he might have fallen and bumped his head, because he was clearly dead. Still, the autopsy assistant determined that he did not hit his head and that the only way he could have died was a nosebleed.
- My conclusion is that the most likely cause of death is epistaxis, the technical term for a nose-bleed. The most common cause of epistaxis is picking the nose and I believe that is likely to be what happened – the doctor who performed the autopsy told the media.
Bothwell was a normal young man, until he had suffered a brain hemorrhage, leaving him incapable of work. This led him to alcoholism, which, in the end, it seems, caused his death.
