Why does a one loss, SEC champ Florida team who played The Citadel get to the MNC in 2008 while a 12-0 SEC champ Auburn team who played The Citadel was denied the MNC game in 2004? And that 2004 dealio was purportedly BECAUSE AU had The Citadel on its schedule?

Here's Auburn's 2004 schedule:

Different circumstances, Florida and Oklahoma are the best teams in the nation, or best 1 loss teams, don't matter which way you look at it. Auburn that year was not the best team, OU and usc were.

I'm not so sure my brutha. AU was pretty stout in '04. I think they would have given usucc a run for their money in the MNC. Cadillac was running amok and they were posting ridiculous rushing numbers every game.

Look at OUr 2004 schedule and compare it to the 2004 AU schedule above. Remember, the most points AU allowed their entire regular '04 season was 20, with two TD's or less the rest of their games.

Sep. 4 BOWLING GREEN W 40-24
Sep. 11 HOUSTON W 63-13
Sep. 18 OREGON W 31-7

Oct. 16 at Kansas State W 31-21

The easiest answer is the BCS formula was different then than it is now. If the same BCS formula was used today we'd be playing Texas again.

That Adrian Peterson guy was posting ridiculous rushing numbers each game too.

That year, prior to the championship, OU, USC, and Auburn were ALL undefeated AND conference champions. They were inventing new awards just so they could give them to OU layers, and USC had Leinart, Reggie Bush, LenDale White, AND Dwayne Jarrett.

The computers just thought USC and OU were better.

This year the only undefeated is Utah, but the computers think OU, FL, and Texas are the top three and have to make a choice there. The difference is that this year, only two of the three won their conference and Florida happens to be one of the two.

Granted, OU and AU had won their CCG's. Of course, usucc plays in what passes for a BCS conference and didn't have to play a CCG game. All this leads me to the inevitable conclusion...WE NEED A DAMN 16 TEAM PLAY-OFF DAMMIT!:D

I know but usc and OU were 1and 2 from the beginning. Auburn was not in top ten. That's why preseason rankings matter sometimes

We get to play the horns every year - I say bring on the Gators. I was a student in '78 and the re-match with the Huskers was a big letdown from my point of view. Of course, it wasn't for any MNC and that was the biggest letdown, but re-matches suck. Besides, if we can win against UF, next years RRR will be awesome.

Completely irrespective of where my kid went to college, I was delighted to have OU play in the '04 championship game.

In fact, I had the vandalized Montgomery AL home and stolen OU flags to prove it at the time. Its an honest question because I remember I, and everyone else, were telling the AU folks the reason they didn't deserve a shot at the MNC was because they played a D-IAA team. That was, as I recall, the conventional wisdom across the fruited plain that year.

Just trying to figure out what has changed in four years.

What's your point?
