Well, that was the accepted MNC before the BCS era, there was a split one in 1974, OU got the AP and USC won the UPI since the UPI would not include teams on probation so OU was unranked in the UPI that season.

NationalChamps.net (http://www.nationalchamps.net/NCAA/database/alabama_database.htm) shows them with 11 but their list (http://www.nationalchamps.net/NCAA/nationalchamps_history.htm) shows them with 10.
