Theoretically, it could have been sitting on the bottom of the lake for years. Maybe the bass only ate it last week. Kinda seems like a dumb thing to lie about.

Maybe some fisherman ate a bottom feeder with the ring inside it last week, got drunk, took a dump in the lake, and the bass ate the ring on the way down.

Maybe a mermaid was a drunk, ate her pet bottomfeeder with the ring in it, took a merdump and the bass ate the ring turd.

I don't know about bass, but carp can live essentially forever.

Viking Kitten

Silly woman. Merpeople live in salt water, not lakes. And honesty, I don't think they can take merdumps, because there's a big fin where their merbunghole should be.

Really, though, that's something Hans Christian Anderson never addressed.

Would the mermaid deposit roe and the man fertilize extra utero?

Thats a pretty big bass... Also if that bass ate another bass with the ring in its stomach, that ate a bass with that ring in its stomach that ring is going to go anywhere while the other fish gets digested. Also the ring could have been stirred up by the wind or something and then looked flashy and got eaten.
