Offensive player of the year
QB Colt McCoy, Texas: The Longhorns weren't even supposed to be a Top-10 team, let alone a national title contender. McCoy provided a huge lift with his passing, running and leadership.

He broke Vince Young's school record for quarterback victories and is just one of two players in the Bowl Subdivision with 3,400 yards passing and 500 yards rushing.

Defensive player of the year
DT Gerald McCoy, Oklahoma: This McCoy was nearly unblockable at times while emerging as the emotional leader of the defense.

When Oklahoma suffered key defensive injuries (Ryan Reynolds, Auston English), McCoy was a constant, despite routinely drawing double-teams. The sophomore has recorded 6½ sacks, with four of those in the last four games.

Coach of the year
Mike Leach, Texas Tech: The Red Raiders were lights out on offense, a given in the Leach era. But Leach showed he had more than one dimension in a breakthrough 11-1 season at Tech. A greater attention to defense, which began with the promotion of coordinator Ruffin McNeill, continued. The running game developed as a counterbalance to the passing attack. Tech eventually reached No. 2 in polls.

Freshman of the year
Robert Griffin, QB, Baylor: Griffin needed just one game to win the starting quarterback job at Baylor. Griffin brought great running ability, and he delivered, rushing for 843 yards.

He also showed far more polish as a passer than expected.

Griffin threw for 2,091 yards with 15 touchdowns passes and just three interceptions. He accounted for 28 touchdowns, a school record.

Orakpo got hurt a little down the stretch and his production faded...Mccoy dominated all yr...also look at Mccoys stats as a DT, they are unreal. You cant go wrong with him, lewis, or orakpo and you cant go wrong with Mccoy or Bradford. Ihave no problem with any of those getting chosen

Where on earth is Chase Coffman? I am assuming he made 2nd team TE, but since they omitted a 2nd team TE from the list I could be wrong. Oh well, Sooners are well represented and I have no complaints with McCoy/Bradford. I'm a little surprised with L. Holmes at safety, but maybe I just didn't watch him close enough this year.

I'm a little surprised with L. Holmes at safety, but maybe I just didn't watch him close enough this year. I feel good about DF on the 1st team vs Nic on the coach's 1st team. I haven't seen All-Big 12 play from Nic except some ill-timed PF penalties and some late after-completion seam tackles. However in fairness to Nic the AP-Sportswriters and the fans don't break down film like the coaches do, so there's a lot of away-from-the-ball quality plays that the fans and sportswriters never see that the coaches do.
