That's going to be awesome - I wish OKC had gotten it. Is gotten a word? Anyway, I think it will be really amazing.

Maybe they'll steal it and move it to OKC like was done with the capitol from Guthrie.

JWTK i read it that way at first as well

this is pretty big, actually, here is the height for the Statue of Liberty:

Height from base to torch 151' 1"
Foundation of pedestal to torch 305' 1"

compared to 176' and 220' for the thing in Tulsa

but who would travel to Tulsa just to see it?

The Fake Don Dokken

I think it looks like a giant statue of an Indian...I guess it works in Oklahoma. I was never so happy as to leave Tulsa last May...talk about a city with an identity crisis.

Cam
3/31/2004, 02:54 PM
It will be open year-round and will draw visitors from around the world -- an estimated three to four million a year. If those visitors were to stay over in Tulsa one night, the estimated economic impact would be about 562 million dollars a year and would create an additional 95-hundred jobs. Isn't this being a little over ambitious? Not that Tulsa's a bad place, but the Statue of Liberty and the Washington Monument are in cities that have a little bit more going for it than just those sites.

RacerX
3/31/2004, 02:55 PM
heh, he originally wanted it in OKC.

Yep. In Bricktown. But the city was concerened that it wouldn't fit in with the overall plan. I was surprised to hear that they had a plan.

Sooner51
3/31/2004, 02:58 PM
This is kinda bizarre.

It also has plasma screens.

Gray, who admits he doesn’t like windows, says the statue will be equipped with big screen televisions inside, so when tourists exit the elevators at the midway point of “The American,” they will see video of the outside vista—not the vista itself. link (http://www.urbantulsa.com/article.asp?id=1893)

there was an article in the Urban Tulsa where the sculptor and others admitted inflating the economic impact of this statue. Also, the newsmedia failed to explain that Tulsa would not see any money directly from the statue as all admission revenue goes directly back to the investors. Tulsa will see the indirect impact of people spending money at other places in the city.

Anyway, i thin the adjusted eco the impact was about 900k a year. Far less than stated, but we'll take it.

Also, this guy has never built a statue over 16 feet, so who knows if this thing will even be feasible.......

I am ever-so-hopeful that it isn't a scam. As in:

"We had private financing, but something happened, and now if you want us to finish it, you've got to give us the dough".

You know, something like that. If memory serves, they're now projecting something like 1/10th the economic impact they started with. I don't care--I still want it built. If it's on the level.

From the link (http://www.urbantulsa.com/article.asp?id=1893)

Presently, The American is a gift, but one not entirely delivered, Melanie Gray admitted that one of the Oklahoma City investors pulled out after Gray decided on Tulsa—leaving the project $10 million short of its budget. Even so, the artist reassured city leaders that an endowment has been set-up to handle the maintenance of the project after its completion.

I worry that this might turn out to be some sort of scam. But oh well, wait and see i guess.

As for Tulsa having an identity crisis, i agree, but it is well justified in my opinion. Tulsa was/is the economic engine of this state. I know some hate to admit that, but its true. And with the Oil and Gas industry leaving, it has left a vacuum which was filled by the telecom industry for a moment. Probably will be filled by the rental car industry or something in the future, who knows.

I just hope they put the damn thing on a hill. If they put in in west tulsa surrounded by the sunoco refinery, they might as well put it next to some ugly *** highway in okc.

yes, still in the works. there was a bit on the local news just the other day concerning the matter. a group is still gathering private funds for the project.

I just don't see it ever happening. Sorry, I think it would be kind of cool, but I just am not holding my breath.

On the other hand, a group of people said they wanted to re-start the Tulsa Philharmonic and needed a cool million by the end of the month to do that, and some mysterious gent drove up and left a cashiers check for that amount a few days ago, so who knows what can happen. There is A LOT of old oil money still in this town.
