View Full Version : UT Math or How OU Runs Up the Score

OUr counterparts associated with the big school in Austin, TX have been doing their part to clog the internet with post after post on hornfans.com complaining about OUr coach, Bob Stoops, and how week after week he leaves his first string offense in and runs up the score against OUr hapless opponents.

As Sooner fans, we followed OUr games from opening kickoff to final gun and know that the explosive Sooner offense was scoring at will in the first and second quarters (this was practically the only scoring in the first half of the season) and only played competively in the third in Big XII games.

The perception, however, is that the big scores OU won by were due to bad sportsmanship on the part of coach Stoops.

A relatively new poster to hornfans.com, Sooner303, tried to correct this misconception by pointing out a statistic (which I have not verified but it sounds about right) that a side-by-side comparison of Sam Bradford to Colt McCoy reveals the following numbers of 4th Quarter Minutes Played:

Bradford - 38
McCoy - 118

In reply, a UT fan, who no doubt majored in rocket science, said Sam played 15 minutes in the 4th quarters of both the Texas and OSU games.

Hmmm . . . so not only is Sam possibly the best QB to play for Oklahoma but he also plays on defense and special teams!

It was also pointed out to the readers at hornfans that OU scored on average only 6 points/game in the 4th quarter vs UT's 9.5 (42-point differential over 12 games).

OU's defense scored in the second half of the year via 1 punt, 2 fumbles and 1 INT returned for a TD, a safety and a 2-point conversion attempt return, for a total of 32 points (counting the PAT's).

This means 2.5 of OU's 53.3 ppg were a result of the defense scoring.

So unless OUr defense has practiced taking a knee instead of running towards the opponent's goalline when they find themselves in possession of the ball, there is a chance they will score.

Also this does not show the scores following a return (KO, punt, INT or fumble) that sets up the offense with a short field (such as the 2-yard line).

What it all means is that final scores show the final result, but do not indicate how or when the numbers were put on the board.

You are wasting your time if you think you can convince a horn fan that they are wrong. You can throw facts at them until the cows come home. It wont do any good.
Their mind is made up right or wrong. It is the way it is and the way it will always be.

Thats why they are silly, silly little horns. :D

Early in the year they were scoring so fast that they could have taken the first team out much earlier but even the first team players need snaps to get on the same page. They really needed to stay in for playing time more than anything else.

Here's a side by side comparison of the Sooners and Whorns showing scoring by quarter through the season.

OU: 1st - 215 tu: 1st - 104
2nd - 203 2nd - 173
3rd - 150 3rd - 135
4th - 72 4th - 115

The Whorns have scored 14 or more points in the 4th quarter 5 times this season. They have scored none in the 4th quarter only twice.

The Sooners have scored 14 or more points in the 4th quarter ONCE. And that was against oSu. We all know what that game was like in the 4th.
The Sooners have not scored at all in the 4th quarter on 4 occassions.

Oklahoma has scored 418 points in the first half of our games, as opposed to only 222 in the second half. That's a 196 point drop off in the second half of games.

saxet has scored 277 in the first half of their games, as opposed to 250 in the second. Not much of a drop off there! Only a whopping 27 point drop off in the second half of their games.

If we are running up the score, we have certainly figured out a strange way to do it! We run the score up on folks in the FIRST half of games!

well, they have found a new way to determine the Big XII champ.
Actually, I hope they change the rules and then get the bite in the butt next year based on this logic.

On the question "If MU beats OU"

shouldn't TTech go the the MNC based on their head to head victory over the horns?

Texas Tech doesn't get [censored] in the equation because, guess what, they HAVE THE BIGGEST LOSS!! SEE?

It's about how BAD you lost, and where. New rule. Made and established by THE University of Texas.

I'm still laughing over the concept of how anything on hornfans.com can be "Clogging the internet" when a gnat's phallus has more bandwidth than that message board.

SoonerBacker, you should have the honor of e-mailing this data to Kirky Boy and the ESPiNsters before Game Day. Just so they have their facts straight before they start showing their ignorance, spewing lies and promoting the whorns.
