I'd pick Bama vs. the spread easily and straight up with a bit of pondering.

I'd give a Bama victory about 65-35 odds. If everything plays out like I hope, the two teams that have been doubted the most in the media Bama (for whatever reason is getting "no chance" against Florida) and OU (because of the whole CCG thing) will advance.

I am leaning more and more towards Bama. What is Florida's signature win? So they crush inferior teams!! They make a lot of plays on special teams, but I think Bama controls the LOS and Tebow has really not been a great passer this year...and hasn't really needed to be. With Harvin's status unknown as well, Florida is iffy to me.

Bama, if nothing else, has been battle tested, even if some of the games were games they should have played better. They control the LOS, play attacking defense and will be the best team Florida has faced BY FAR!

I say Bama-OU in the title game. A great defense against a great offense. Classic matchup.

But I will be rooting for bamer

This is exactly why I like Bama in this game. I think they're just a lot more physical and a lot tougher than Florida. It's also why I don't like our matchup against them in a potential MNC game...

If Bama gets their run game established, they win....Florida could be missing a starter or 2 on the DL.....

But if they can't run the ball, they have no shot..John Parker Peter Tom Willis Wilson is not good enough to carry a team

being a gator grad, i'd like to see UF win. BUT, i think our chances are much better against bama in a MNC game. they simply haven't seen an offense like ours, and their offense isn't half as powerful as most in the big12 south - even baylor. i think UF would give us more trouble on defense, imo.

When I watch Florida, I get the feeling there system is a bit more "fragile" than Bama's. Fragile meaning it could be disrupted by a great game plan with good athletes behind it - Bama fits the bill. Also, the injuries to the gators are critical - especially to Harvin. It would be a good prelude to an OU matchup with Florida being OU-like wanting a shootout and Bama wanting to keep it low scoring.

Yep, but I'll have some beer handy to calm me down. ;)

No doubt Daniel will gets some yards on scrambles, but I don't think he can hurt us as bad as ZR did. ZR made some amazing plays, but we did force him to fumble twice (2 pt anti-conversion and the sack to end the game).

Yes. It also surprises me that many tackles are grabbing onto upper body, shoulders, etc. and trying to piggy back them until they fall. This may be typical in college ball these days. Why don't they coach to go for the legs more - take away their wheels and they go down faster.

This is why he doesn't make me all that nervous. He is a different kind of running quarterback. He is not a McCoy, Robinson type scrambler who makes a lot of those plays when a play is broken down. He is a guy who runs a lot of qb designed running plays...and he isn't elusive..heck he just runs right into ya....I like the odds of stopping him from running better than Robinson or McCoy. If I compared him to a QB OU saw this year, he is more Jake Locker than anybody we have seen in the big 12

I obviously think Bama, but I'll actually give reasons why.

- Bama will try to start the game on Defense with 7 in the box, probably in our famous Nickel defense (Saban's forte). If we can stop the run with 7 in the box then our Defense has the advantage. Do I think it can happen? Well we did it against Clemson and UGA, who have MUCH better running games IMO.

- If we are able to stay in the nickel the entire game, expect a lot of disguise blitzes from our safeties and CB's, mostly from the outside on the strong side of the ball. This will force two things to happen: Either our DB's get a clean shot at Tebow, or our DL is matched up 1v1. I like our DL vs their OL 1v1

- Also, we will probably play press coverage with safeties over the top when we dont blitz; to contest short passes while still having a safety net against the big play. We MUST stop the big plays and force Florida to go on mythodical drives. I think we keep the big plays to a minimum, and Florida starts making mistakes once they get frustrated.

- On offense we will start out with play action passes to start the game, just as we did against everyone else that stuffed the box. Watch for Julio, Hanks (an unknown freshman that is coming on strong), and our TE's to catch short to intermediate passes. JPW cant throw the deep ball, but is better than average at timing out routes and medium crossing routes. Florida's secondary is good, but they have only been tested when they KNOW the other team is going to pass. I expect Florida to stack the box to stop the run, and that will put their secondary on islands.

- Our OL vs their DL. We match up well here. Expect Coffee to see and exploit major cut back lanes as the game passes on. As Florida starts to get tired on the DL, expect them to start 'cheating' against blocks, leaving the back side wide open. Both Coffee and Ingram have excellent vision and are awesome at backside cuts. Florida will also be lacking a bit of depth on defense for this game.

- Our WR vs their DB. Not in the passing game, but in the running game. Florida hasnt seen down field blocking like they will see Saturday. Our WR's are big and physical and Florida's DB's are not.

- The 4th Quarter. We are tougher and in better condition, both mentally and physically, than Florida is. If its close going in, expect our OL and DL to dominate the LoS. We really ram it down people's throat in the 4th quarter. I expect our 4-6 yard runs to turn into 10-15 yard runs late in the game.

- Lastly, the biggest match up of the game. Cody vs their center. Will Cody draw a double team the entire game, or can their C block him 1v1? Our run defense DEPENDS on him drawing double teams. I like our chances in this match up.

Final Score?

Bama - 27
Florida - 13

If you saw the FL/FSU game last weekend (something I doubt many sooner fans did, judging by what people are writing), you would understand why Tebow won the Heisman last year, and would understand, that Tebow is actually a better player this year, than last year. It isn't only about Tebow's power when he runs, it is about his decision skills, and leadership. McCoy isn't close. And if you think he isn't elusive, you are mistaken.

I'd take that too. Alabama will slow this game down..... I know you cant really "compare" games to games. But.... Alabama blew out Georgia and so did Florida. I think it will be a 4th quarter game, with Tim Tebow pulling it off at the end, getting Heisman credit. :(

That's the standard line when someone's stats go down. Stats don't lie and while Tebow may have a better team around him, he is not the most dominant player in college football. That guy wears number 14 at OU...and HIS stats don't lie, either.

I'm rooting for Bama. Better for OU to prove to the world it belonged in the NCG by beating an unbeaten team that beat Florida. Our defense can handle John Parker Wilson better than Tim Tebow. All those freshmen and sophomores in the NCG game for Bama... waiting for them to unfold in the big game atmosphere and for OU to pounce and exploit.

I'm just curious, more complete in what way?

And BTW, if you want to say a team that plays on Saturday is overrated, that would be Bama. 7 of the 12 teams they have beaten are not going to bowls. In contrast to that, only 3 of the teams Florida has played are not going bowling.
Good luck on the cold on Saturday. I'm looking forward playing you, if we beat Bama (which we should- as you guys are saying- stats don't lie).

Doesn't the fact that 3 QBs have similar stats this year, playing virtually the same opponents somewhat diminish their accomplishments?

I'm just curious, more complete in what way ?

More complete in the sense he's a better traditional pocket passer, and comparable to Tebow as a running quarterback. It's hypocritical how Texas Tech's quarterbacks are routinely disregarded as merely being system qb's, but Tebow gets a pass. I'm not trying to diminish anything Tebow has accomplished, he's a great player, but he is a system qb.

And BTW, if you want to say a team that plays on Saturday is overrated

I never said this.

Doesn't the fact that 3 QBs have similar stats this year, playing virtually the same opponents somewhat diminish their accomplishments?

You're obviously referring to Bradford, McCoy, and Harrel. You can try and manipulate the numbers any way you want, but nothing diminishes the accomplishment of 46 touchdowns to 6 interceptions.

wickedgator
12/5/2008, 12:39 PM
Tebow doesn't have more yardage simply because he doesn't need to throw the ball as much. We have run over 300 yards in the last 4 games. 4 runners in our team have 500 yards this year. Average yards per carry is close to 10 for Demps, and close to nine for Percy, and Rainey. And all this is done against top defenses in the country 6 of them ranked higher, than the top 3 that OK has faced.
Now you say Tebow is a system QB, but it is more like a victim of the system. He doesn't need to carry the team like last year.
And Tebow has thrown for 2 interceptions this year- against better defenses.

This will all get clarified at bowl time, we just have to be patient.

Good luck, and may we get to chat more on the way to Miami.
