Let's say we have a 3 way tie in the Big 12 South and it ends up as follows:
Texas lost at OSU by 1 point.
OSU lost at home to Texas Tech by 20 points.
Texas Tech lost at home to Texas by 20 points.
The final rankings are Texas #2, OSU #7, Tech #8.
OSU would be within five points of Texas so the rule dropping Tech from consideration would apply and since OSU beat Texas OSU would go.
Is that really better?
The facts are:
1. There is no perfect tie breaker. What looks good one year might look terrible the next.
2. No conference gives any consideration to where you play. A loss is a loss and a win is a win and it's always been that way - even in tie situations.
