Here are the point totals for the highest scoring offenses in the modern D-1 era:

2006 Hawaii-656

1983 Nebraska-654

2005 Texas -652

2008 Oklahoma-640

!995 Nebraska-638

There are some higher scoring teams in college football history (in cluding 2 who scored over 700 points) but they date back to the late 1800's,early 1900's .With 2 games left, it is very possible OU will also crack the 700 barrier.

that's absolutely incredible. What makes it so impressive is the calibur of teams weve played and still put those numbers up on

I don't think it'd be fair for us to compare total number of points -- what's the list when we do it by points per game? That seems more fair, considering that we've got one more regular season game this season than they did in some of those other seasons, don't we?

I think that record is done by the end of the first quarter on Saturday.

2006 Hawaii- 656-(14g)

1983 Nebraska-654-(13g)

2005 Texas -652-(13g)

2008 Oklahoma-640-(12g)

1995 Nebraska-638-(12g)

I also double-checked to make sure point totals included all games including bowls.

IF we break 700 we will be only the third team in history to do so. I'm thinking SOMEONE LIKE hARVARD OR YALE WERE THE OTHER TWO TEAMS IN THE LATE 1800'S OR EARLY 1900'S. .I got the info For this from the Oklahoman but I can't find the paer to get the rest of the information.I tried looking on NewOK.com but couldn't find the story.

sORRY TOO TIRED TO EDIT.

I think one article I saw said the last team to top 700 was the 1904 U of Minnesota Gophers.

I think one article I saw said the last team to top 700 was the 1904 U of Minnesota Gophers. You are right about Minnesota (725 in 13 games),the other major college team to top 700 was Harvard in 188(765 in 14 games).
I still can't find the Oklahoman article but found this on a web search.

If OU scores 86 points(tall order,I realize) in their final two games they will be the all-time highest scoring MAJOR College team in history and not just modern era.Sorry but IMHO Harvard is not major college football.

We should go for that single game record of over 200 points Saturday night. Was it Yale that laid that on poor little Cumberland?

That was Georgia Tech over Cumberland in 1916. 222-0Everybody acts like that score is a big deal and I know it is the all-time highest score in a game but similar scores were not that uncommon back in the day.OU scored 179 on Kingfisher(I think in 1914).Other single game point totals by OU back in the day include 167,157,140 and even 104 vs. Arkansas.Bennie Owen(1905-1926 led OU to 8 games of 100 or more points.Funny thing is you would see scores like that in a season and 0-0 or 6-6 scores as well.

So we are currently 24th on that list. However, if you pare it down to Major College teams:

We are ALREADY the 11th highest scoring team in major CFB history! The 6th highest scoring team since 1900.

If you exclude the pre WWII era, in which football didn't have a lot of the rules and sportsmanship unwritten rules that we have today...we could become the highest scoring offense in the modern era quite easily. Being the first to crack 700 points on the season in this era would be extremely impressive, and IMO we would definately deserve talk of having the best offense ever.

True but if we score 86 we pass Minnesota as the highest scoring major college team of ALL-Time.

I see you got your info from the same site I used. :)
