View Full Version : Two lessons and a prediction from this BCS result.

First, background notes:
Our [OU vs TX] margins in the Harris and coaches polls both went down drastically versus last week, when including our OSU win and their aTm win. In fact, we actually went from (+16) in the Harris to (-5); we lost the Harris poll this week. We went from (+63) in the Coaches' poll to (+1) following those two results.

Having taken all that into account, it is unlikely that the Harris voters and the Coaches voters were drastically impressed with Texas beating their unranked in state rival at home, while at the same time being significantly unimpressed with our road victory over our in-state rival ranked #12.

Therefore:

LESSON ONE: The politics matters. I appreciate Bob trying to take the high road and all, but when the other side is cheating, you either cheat too, or get run over. If not for our superiority in the computer rankings, we would have come in 3rd in the BCS rankings, and it would likely have been because Bob chose to lose elegantly rather than do what it takes to win; tactics matter where the rubber meets the road when the stakes are high - even if the tactics involve the complete and utter cheating Brown was undertaking (take this from a former Al Gore supporter, wholeheartedly). I'm sorry, Bob, but if Mack is doing it, we need to be doing it too. When they call you to state your case during the TX/aTm game, you need to go on the air and make our case.

In addition, we improved our standing in all but one computer ranking by virtue of adding OSU's 9 wins to our data, while Texas added only 4 for aTm. However, this was not really the deciding factor - our margin would have been much wider if UT Chattanooga had been a FBS opponent (even Buffalo or someone), and if Washington had won a game or two. Furthermore, Texas can look in the mirror and point the finger at themselves on this element as well: they chose to play Florida Atlantic and UTEP rather than more respectable foes.

If either team had strategized differently (or in their crystal ball had known about the declines happening in Washington or Arkansas) and played better teams, the results in the computer polls could have been enough to salt away the ranking without much worry (in OU's case) or flip the result (in the case of Texas). Therefore:

LESSON TWO: Fail to dine on cupcakes in September.

Now of course, we are all glad that this came out as it did, and the unkind folks at PornFans are as livid as I have ever seen them. And we need to remember, there is one more game to go - we play Mizzou next weekend. A prediction, not about that game, but about PornFan behavior leading up to it, is in order, if only because they cannot be trusted to do the right thing at all in the coming days (as displayed by their fearless leader Lack Crown on the playback today, who I found to have made about a 6-minute political advertisement during an injury timeout during the 3rd quarter.)

PREDICTION:
All week long, the folks from PornFans, the UT athletic department, and the state of Texass in general, will plea to the media, voters, and anyone else who will listen, that Texas should be voted ahead of OU in the final BCS rankings if the Sooners fail to demolish Missouri by at least the same margin Texas did back in October.

In short, even if we win, this is NOT over yet. They will lobby, whine, cajole, and rig votes if they can, and even if we win next week, they can and will try to steal our spot in in the BCS title game.

Plan your propaganda for this week accordingly.

First, OU will demolish Mizzou. This year's OU team is better than last year's, and Mizzou is worse this year than last. Their D is a sieve, and they darn near got beat by Baylor. They were beaten in Columbia by that same OSU team that we put 61 on. Second, there isn't much that they can do. The computers will landslide in OUr favor. Their only shot is if we lose. Now, they may get momentum to get a split championship, but if we beat either an undefeated 'Bama team or a Tebow-led red-hot FLA team in the state of Florida, nobody anywhere will buy into it. I hope Utah comes in pizzed orf against UTerus, it would be a home field for them, in all essence. UTerus could complain, but it won't matter. No doubt, we have a vile enemy, vile indeed, who has lots of money and sway. I just think it would be too little, too late for them.

That won't work, even if OU wins on a fluke bad call. A win is a win, especially in a conference title game on the road against a Top-20 opponent.

The only thing that can really hurt (and I mean really hurt bad) would be for OU to lose to Missouri. That would send either UT or USC to the title game. The thought of that is unbearable.

If UT or SUC gets to the big game, that would be cause to shoot 6 holes in your freezer, or your TV

Personally, I would rather Bob take the high road instead of coming down to the classless whining and moaning BS that :mack: and the rest of the horns put the country through even if it did mean they got the nod over OU. :mack: does this every year. Its like the little boy that cried wolf. Eventually people are going to stop listening. That may have had something to do with it this year. People are tired of :mack: being :mack:

assuming they win this week, USC would be the media darling so fast if we lost to Mizzou it would be sickening

Voters should be ashamed they fell for the political aspect. They obviously got sucked into the bull**** and thus forgot that Texas lost a game so late in the season.

This system friggin' sucks

There is no way in hell that the coaches should have compromised Florida for the sake of OU/UT - if I were Urban Myer I would be screaming bloody murder right now..

They crushed Florida St and Texas still moved ahead of them for the simple purpose of trying to get them in the CCG.

What if and it is totally unlikely but possible - UT stays ahead of Florida in the BCS...

Computers saved our arse- these politics could have not only screwed OU but potentially screwed Florida - I think that is a real travesty that should be investigated when 17 million dollars are on the line.

As far as politicking I am glad we didn't and I was happy with Stoops shots at Mack in his presser..

If we had lost though- I would say well we have to join them or try and change the game.

I disagree, Yer. I think if that happened, they'd be on Tejas' jock even harder than they are now -- because then they'd all have "proof" that they were right when they said there was no choice but for Tejas to play in the CCG, because they have scoreboard on us.

I think some of those arseclowns would even start mumbling in their sleep about how Texas was "robbed" by the "senseless BCS", and deserves to play in whatever game it chooses. Assuming they aren't already ;)

This system friggin' sucks

...and screams for a higher level of accountability. Riddle me this...

Florida beats a ranked FSU...at FSU...by 30.
OU beats a ranked OSU...at OSU...by 20 (a team UT beat at home by 4)
Texas beats a 7-loss, unranked aTm...in Austin...by 40 (a team OU beat by 38 at Kyle Field).

Yet, Texas passes Florida in the Coaches' Poll, and passes OU in the Harris Poll. WTF? That can't be rationally explained by the results on the field from the last few days. It smacks of politics and agendas.

All human votes should be public...every week. And there should be some type of oversight committee for each human poll that monitors wacky votes and results. Remember last year when the Bowdens and, I think, Bellotti, among others, voted OU behind Mizzou...after we'd already spanked them not once, but twice? You're either a complete idiot, or driven by some agenda, to make that kind of vote. Either way, a situation like that deserves public scrutiny and unbiased oversight. Make an agenda-driven vote that cannot be justified, and you get your right to vote stripped for the remainder of the season (or the entire next season).

And I'm officially on the playoff bandwagon.

As far as lessons go, you are correct in such an unusual case as we had this year. And the BCS has some weirdness every year. But I don't think that is enough reason to schedule a bunch of tough non-conference teams - especially with the 12 game season. I think OU had the right balance with Cinncy and TCU and there is no way the Washington thing could be foreseen. And Chatty was a replacement for another weak team (middle Tenn?). Sure it hurts the computer rankings a bit, but not nearly as bad as losing a couple of them! I think the right mix for elite teams is to target 1 quality non-conf team and then middle of the pack teams from BCS conferences. But with 12 games, I'll bet there will still be a Chatty or Citadel in a lot of schedules.

I'm afraid that after next week Texas will make a jump at us since Florida or Alabama must lose and Texas will gain votes from the voters/computers who would have votes for one of those SECuck teams

You guys are spot on that the Florida results is a tell-tale sign of conniving (more hanging chad ? ;) ). The voters knew dropping the gators for a week while the vote is still secret wouldn't make any difference. If the gators do prevail next week, I fully expect them to be #1 in the now public human polls.

I'm glad all this non-sense is over, and no, UT will not get any love if we beat Mizzou because the vote will be public. I just hope there is no letdown next week, because Mizzou is dangerous.

No, but since Texas didn't have any #1 votes this week, I'll bet Mac votes Texas #1 next week and OU #5--if every thing else remains the same that would move UT ahead of us.

Keep in mind too, that it wasn't just Mack and all the UT fans out there lobbying for Texas. It was everyone who spoke on the air for any ESPN affiliate. ESPN led an all-out media war against OU.

Ummm a lot of people who were on Texas's side today will move to the Oklahoma side because the votes will be made public (at least in the coaches).
