Missouri offensive coordinator Dave Christensen, Gary Pinkel’s right-hand man the last 17 seasons, will be announced as the next head coach at Wyoming, a source close to Christensen confirmed to the Tribune.

Christensen, also MU’s offensive line coach and Pinkel’s assistant head coach, interviewed with Wyoming officials in Laramie, Wyo., Saturday night after MU’s 40-37 loss to Kansas in Kansas City. He and his wife, Susie, were expected to return to Columbia today for Missouri’s team banquet. Christensen has been unavailable for comment

It’s uncertain whether Christensen will continue and coach the Tigers through Saturday’s Big 12 championship game in Kansas City or in a bowl game. Christensen has called offensive plays throughout his tenure at Missouri, though in the past he’s credited his entire offensive staff for collectively designing MU’s game plans.

In recent weeks, Christensen’s name has also surfaced among media reports for the head-coaching openings at New Mexico and Washington, though last week Christensen told the Tribune he had not been contacted by Washington officials. Christensen has previously interviewed for three head-coaching positions during his time at Missouri, at Akron, Central Michigan and Washington State last December.

Christensen played three seasons as a walk-on offensive lineman under Don James at Washington while Pinkel was there cutting his teeth as the Huskies’ wide receivers coach. Christensen later spent two seasons coaching Washington’s offensive line. In 1992, after Pinkel’s first season as the head coach at Toledo, he shook up his coaching staff and hired Christensen from Idaho State to coach the offensive line. The Everett, Wash., native has been with Pinkel every season since then. He was promoted to offensive coordinator at Toledo in 1997.

When Pinkel brought his staff to Missouri after the 2000 season, Christensen passed up an opportunity to succeed Pinkel as Toledo’s head coach and instead became Missouri’s offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. .
