It's confusing for many folks IMO.

This years winner will be THE 2009 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS.

Yes...this is the 2008 Football Season but it ends in 2009.

I brought it up in another post today and there seems to be some confusion.

This is the way I see it. Feel free to discuss the point if you want...heck maybe you can even convince me I'm wrong. Good Luck with that though.

Anyway...I'll throw this little link in as support of my Theory.

The national Championship for 2000 was played in 2001 if I remember correctly. I just go by the numbers on the Press Box and they go for the school year not the calendar year the championship is played in.

Just some evidence. We defeated Florida State in the BCS Title Game on 01-03-01 for the 2000 Championship. We defeated Penn State on 01-01-86 for the 1985 National championship. We defeated Michigan on 01-01-76 for the 1975 Title.

there's no confusion -- the national championship has always been considered the season in which the games (minus bowl games) were played. this year it's '08.

The "Official" winner may not be announced until January 20th, 2009 at the Innaugural Speech...It will be Barack's first order of business to decide what is best for the Country by himself...It won't matter who won, but just who is the most popular team, to him, after the BCS Championship game...This is called a Gorism...Al Gore almost got away with this in 2000...

It could happen...Let's see if there are any references from the President Elect about who he thinks is the deserving team after the BCS Championship game...

Well, what's even more interesting is this season's Super Bowl Champion (played in February 2009) will be recognized as the 2008 Champion. It has always been like that but still....and many people will refer to it as the 2009 World Champion when in fact it is for the year in which most of the season was played in...2008.
