One game does not a pattern change. I'm certain with two weeks to prepare, Bob was heavily involved in the defensive scheming and prep work as he had seen enough.

That said, the defensive effort may have convinced some A.D. tonight that his school should have BV as the head football coach. That would be a win/win, IMO.

Or maybe you should be saying, how about Bob Stoops? Anyone that thinks this is in any way a product of Vulnerables alone is a homer moron. We've got 4 years of him ****ting up the defense. Hopefully, Clemson will view this as a good reason to hire this idiot and we won't have to worry about another 55-19 jerk-off fest.

It's apparent that he can't keep the d focused for 60 minutes as they gave up a td with 11 seconds. that and 400 yards, it's disgraceful, how can we put up with this crap.;)

I am reserved for one week. If OU can do this again...maybe he has listened or at least changed some things up...which he did against Tech.

I would also say...the LBs are starting to gel together. That makes a HUGE difference!

I'm forced to admit, BV has managed to coach up the defense far better than I thought he could, and far better than I said he could or would.

It's possible he's not only not as bad as I thought, he might actually be pretty good at what he does.

While I'm much chagrined by this possibility, I'm also much pleased :D

After watching our back 7 play throughout the year, I didn't think there was a snowballs chance in h*ll that we would could cover the Tech receivers like we did tonight while at the same time our DL were bull-rushing with discipline while keeping their heads up to not only knock down passes, but also keep Harrell in the pocket. Da*n fine coaching job the last 2 weeks.

I'll back of the bandwagon alittle. The D needs to perform well against the pokes and hopefully in the Big 12 title game.

Good, no, GREAT job tonight coach.

Let's look at the "body of work" and compare this defense to others this year.
You don't even want me to look at the past few years.

This year, we've given up > 25 points 6 times in 11 games.
By contrast, USC has shut out 3 teams, held 4 more to 10 or less, and exactly 1 team scored > 25 points.
Texas has given up > 25 three times.
1 team has scored more than 25 against tOSU, Florida, and Alabama.
Ball Freakin State has not allowed an opponent to score 25.
Neither has Penn State.

So far, doesn't compare very favorably to other Top 25 programs.
It is comparable, almost, to LSU and Texas Tech who have allowed 25 points five times.

Do we need to look at the whole Top 25? Not me, I've seen enough.
See, I start with the premise that our defense should be dominant.

This defense made the same mistakes for 10 straight weeks.
The biggest weakness continues to be...tackling.

If he doesn't get another gig this year, BV at least needs some more help getting these kids ready to play every week.

Not very good defensive rankings. OK, 10th ranked rushing defense. Pretty good. Not dominant when you're not in the top 50 in total D and pass D.

Especially when we are up by 30 by half almost every week effectively forcing opponents to pass the ball.

Completely bogus. The only valid comparison is Texas. No other conferences are facing all the spread offenses that we are every week. Ball State?! Do you know why Ball Freakin' State hasn't allowed more than 25? Probably because the play in the freakin' MAC. I imagine our defense would do well against the MAC, don't you think? Or the Big Ten++, where the big boys still employ the three-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust offense. Or the SEC, which has stunk it up offensively this year outside of Florida. USC's defense is frightening on first glance...but the Pac-10 is weaksauce this year.

We won't know anything for sure until bowl season.

Yup, Gandalf. You're right. They're #1 in total D in the Big XII. And if you accept mdklatt's premise that it's because of the amazing offenses in the Big XII then you won't be convinced.

The first half of the season I was trying to figure out if the offenses in the Big XII were that good or the D's were that bad. After watching us flail and whiff tackles for 9/11 games this year I've decided it's both.

They looked good in 2 games. I've watched great defense for years. I watched it last night. But I haven't seen it from this team consistently since Mike Stoops left.

I was just trying to answer your last question and I believe I just named 4 teams in the Top 25 with statistically worse defenses. Also, look at USC...they have played 1 good offensive team and they got shredded. OUr defense hasn't been that great but they also have fared better than any of their brethren in the Big XII

This D is bad. Sure they're young and banged-up, but they were bad before the injury bug hit. Serious improvement is in order.

I agree completely.
I've mentioned before in the BV/Defense threads that my concern with the D (more than just this year) has been inconsistency. I thought we had a great game plan for tech last weekend, but we always seem to have an answer for tech, so I wasn't overly surprised our D could slow them down. So I was not about to jump back on the "Keep BV" bandwagon. And I'm still not ready.
Year after year more often than not and as seen last night, BV has a problem finding answers against mobile QBs and it still seems our D plays inconsistently. So as I said a few weeks ago, (when nearly everyone finally seemed to be mentioning BV may need to go), I'd like to see improvement/something fresh or new that can be consistent against teams. It's why BV gets paid the big bucks, it's his job to find solutions to stop or slow down offenses. And whether that means bye bye BV or whether it means Stoops needs to get even more involved in our D coaching than he already is...whatever it takes I hope they can fix it.

The game plan last night was atrocious...and that is being nice.

All too often we left pulled our LBs out of the middle of the field and actually dropped them 10-15 yards deep.

It seemed like all we were worried about was the deep ball to Dez Bryant that we forgot how to stop the rush.

Pathetic showing by our defense...but I am not calling for anyone's head. It was a good game and we should be in KC next week. Lets see if BV can game plan for Missouri like he did last year.

If OU does not win it all, the fan's should call for BV's resignation. The offense is too good, for BV to fail us.

The fans can yell all they want, BV is not going to get canned after an 11-1 regular season and a #1 or #2 rating in the conference in most defensive stats. Bob would be a total wuss if he listened. But I'm sure all personal and schemes will be evaluated after the seaon is over. We don't have a great D this year and it isn't going to magically change in the next 2 games. We are going to have to win the way we have all year - a relentless offense and a defense getting a few critical stop and turnovers. If that is not enough to win out, then we don't win out.

The difficulty against running QBs seems to me to be linked to middle linebacker play. We weren't having that much difficulty with it this year until Reynolds went down. It sagged a bit and then improved, though we didn't face another really good running QB after McCoy until Robinson. Box was struggling with it, and then he goes down. After Balogun entered the game...man, I don't know. He may not have much experience yet, but he looks like he's got the makings of a great LB. It will be interesting to see what he does with Daniel, although Alexander and Beal may make his acquaintance early and often.
