A friend gave me a PS3 today that he got from his brother...he had no idea if it worked.

I just plugged it in, got a red pwr lite and connected the Red/White/Yeller cables to my TV.

Shouldn't there be a main screen, even without any game or anything in? All I have is a black screen, but when I cycle the power it flashes slightly.

Workee or brokee?

Any HELPFUL suggestions? :P

Thought of that.

My Xbox has a main screen, regardless of whether there is a game or not...I was gonna rent one if I got that screen thingy...now I'm wondering if the hard drive isn't working.

Cheaper to get fixed or buy a new console...?

You make sure you have your TV set to the right component?

Yes, thanks for helping....

I plugged into the front input (5) and also input (2) in the back. Get the "flash" each time, but no pic or sound.

Connector cable bought separately...S-video and RYW connections. I only use one or the other, yes? Not both...

When the power goes on, I hear a hard drive spin up, or a fan, but the noise isn't very loud.

You should have a black screen with icons running horizontally. I hate to ask this but did you push the front right button down? Hold it down until it beeps.

Actually, you might need both if you are using S-Video. It only transmits the video.

The red light means it is powered, but not on. So you are at least getting power to the dang thing. You might try putting in a normal ole DVD and see what you get.

I think the "ON" light color is either green or blue, so if you get that, you should be good.

I was an electronics instructor in the Navy...first thing we always say in troubleshooting: "Oh En, Oh Ef Ef Switch?"

I have the back toggle on and the front right button turns the light to green when I touch it...beeps and the fan/HD makes a noise, but not loud.

Does the light stay green?

Almost. I have white/red/yellow and the s-video...so, one more than on picture. Also, the s-video doesn't plug in very easily.

Ok, then you only use either the s-video or the yellow.

Have you tried just using the red, white and yellow RCA connectors?

And, does the light stay green, or does it flash and go back to red?

It may be set to a resolution that cannot be passed through the S-Video cable. If you have an HDMI input on your TV try hooking it up that way, it should be able to handle almost any resolution that it is set to.

Do a hard reset on the machine.

I'm guessing the person who had it before you was using HDMI and was getting a 720/1080p picture out of it, and may have forced HD output. If you've got it hooked up through either S-Video or Composite Video (the yeller cord) then it can't pass the signal.

How do you do a hard reset, Froze?

Power off with the switch in back.

Power back on while holding on/off button on front panel.

Wait for three beeps.

That should do it.

Frozen Sooner

If that doesn't work, from standby mode hold the power button for 10 seconds.

Actually, try that first.

Yup, that did it, but now get the component cables so you can get HD on it. :)
(s-video doesn't give HD, does it?)

Now...

What's the best way to learn about my new toy? I don't have a manual or nuttin. I'm clueless about PS3.

I did put my Sooner Legends DVD in and it worked well.

I have 1 HDMI input in the back of my TV and the DVR is connected to it. What's the best cable configuration?

(I'm still doleing out six-packs!)

I think they sell them at Radio Shack/Best Buy/etc. Get something like that and the HDMI PS3 cable.

You'll get some different answers from people on that.

Personally, I can't tell a difference between the two.

Use HDMI for sound.

OK...I bought a cheap system at the CC in Sherman, TX(closing sale) that has only one digital in(Toslink)...My JVC I bought 6 years ago has 4 digital in's(2 optical, 2 coaxial)...I wanted to try a HTS that had wireless rear speakers so I wouldn't have to get into the attic.

It doesn't sound bad...I just automatically assumed that anything new would at least have what my old receiver has in the way of connections. I bought a toslink splitter and a coaxial to toslink converter..my tv has the digital coaxial out on it

is that an adapter for the 3 colored cords that go in the tv? as it stands now, if i want to switch from tv to ps3 i have to reach in the back and switch out the cords. will this allow me to have both plugged in and choose if i want tv/ps3?

Hook the PS3 up through the HDMI cable and hook your DVR up through a component (NOT composite) input.

So Froze, if I get what STEP recommends, both gizmos with HQ cables, am I golden?

Frozen Sooner
11/20/2008, 02:30 PM
You could be. Sometimes the PS3 doesn't play nice with HDMI switchers because it doesn't get the needed HDCP handshake.

Sigh.

Well, I'll give it a shot. I would like to HDMI as much as possible...

Frozen Sooner
11/20/2008, 03:01 PM
It'll probably work. Mainly when you get those problems it's because you're running two HDMI switchers (ie a switcher into an HDMI switching receiver) at once. To be safe I'd make sure you power up the TV, then the switcher, then the PS3.

stoops the eternal pimp
11/20/2008, 03:01 PM
Thats the hookup I did on a friend's ps3...If I still had my switcher, I would just send it to ya..I bought a tv with 4 HDMI inputs on it and gave the switcher away

Lott's Bandana
11/20/2008, 03:37 PM
Great input guys. (sorry, pun.)

I have a 56" projection, DVD player (obsolete now?), Cox DVR and now PS3 to all plug in...I'll get the HDMI switcher and plug the DVR and PS3 into it HDMI with good cables....

I think that's it?

Now, I'm looking for some good external speakers...ha!
