okay, so this probably isn't the BEST place to ask for advice (no, I am not getting my tongue pierced because I like to SD..), but what do you all think about piercings? Right now I just have my ears pierced, but I want to get either my cartilage ear, nose, or tongue pierced. What is your limit on who you would hire? Would you hire someone with their tongue/nose pierced?

I am 20 and a chemical engineer, if that makes any difference.

that's a shame...

certain nose piercings are somewhat more accepted

the tongue, well it depends on how noticeable it is and how much it affects your sleep

easiest one to get away with, is the ear cartilage

If I interviewed two candidates, both equal in education and experience, and one had piercings and the other did not, I would hire the non-pierced one. Attitudes may be slowly changing about piercings, but right now the people most likely to be involved in hiring decisions do not "get" piercings. In my opinion.

Semi-related note: I saw this guy last week who had what they (I think) call gauged ears, so his his ear holes were about two inches in diameter. Only he had taken the jewelry out, so his lobes looked like meat tendons, just a flappin' and a wigglin' around all over the place. I seriously almost barfed it was so gross. Why? Why? WHY DO YOU DO THIS?

Yeah. I'm just not impressed by people who do weird stuff just so they can impress other people who do the same weird stuff. Maybe they should all hire each other.

Also, HSE can have rules regarding piercings that the feel may interfere with the use of PPE and other safety equipment

I'm with Doc: I just don't get it.

BUT that little nose stud isn't so bad; even "tasteful" one might say.
I have to say that because my daughter and 2 of her soccer teammates got their noses pierced like that when the team went to Copenhagen last summer. I think they were afraid I'd kill them or blow a fuse or something, but it was such a totally fabulous day in a beautiful city (despite the socialists ;) ) -- and I'd had a few large Carlsbergs -- that I just had to laugh. I did say I was VERY glad they didn't get tattoos though. I might have blown up if they did that.

Get a decent job...then get the piercings. You might wait awhile...like after your tenured or your work speaks for itself...or your doing the Boss and your a lock for Vice President. I'm 48 and I wouldn't hire anyone with visible piercings or tats. We also ask clients and our witnesses to cover or remove them at trial because people in Oklahoma are generally less likely to trust and/or sympathize with a pierced/tatted person. Fair? Prolly not. But that's just the way it is.

It's veiwed by a lot of upper class people as a pop culture fad that is waning. Problem is, unlike last season's fashions, you can't simply update your look by buying new duds.

One final note. Generally, people with neck and/or facial tats are condemning themselves to a job at which they wear a shirt with their name on it for life.

I am going to offer a counter view. I am someone who has piercings and old enough to completely discredit the whole idea that piercings are fashionable. With that being said, I think that piercings are personal and it is your choice.

You have to accept that there are those who will discriminate against people wearing piercings. That is clear from the responses in this thread.

My sister is a high school teacher and she told me that the girls that get tongue piercings get an immediate bad rep. Apparently, you are aware of this with your comment that you don’t do whatever. If you are comfortable with that and still want to do it, then go ahead.

I am somewhat amused by the attitude of my now deceased father who said that he would disown any of his sons who wore an earring. Apparently, he had no problem with tattoos. I’ve got piercings and tattoos.

It just seems to me that piercings tend to grow back and well tattoos tend to be much more permanent. That is except, like VK pointed out, those who insert increasingly larger gage earrings and stretch their earlobes out to near flapping.

I can wear earrings during the weekend and not to work.

Only one time I forgot to take it out and I noticed it in the lift going to my office.

In short, you should do whatever makes you happy.

Therefore, I'm going to give you the best advice possible.

Young women shouldn't get their nipples pierced because of the possibility of complications later during breast feeding.

Guys shouldn't get their penis pierced because of the possibility of multiple pee streams down their leg. And, never, ever get your penis pierced in San Francisco and then board a 12-hour flight to Asia. Airline toilets are not sound proof.

Concerning the other thing about the ring thing, not recommended for airline travel.
