Lubbock, Texas — Mike Leach doesn’t use his cluttered office much. It’s mostly for meeting with recruits. Not to titillate them with tape of Texas Tech’s record-setting spread offense, of course. No, it’s to show them card tricks. Leach saw a card trick during the 2003 Houston Bowl trip, figured it out and has been showing off to recruits and visitors ever since.

The office doesn’t even look like it’s occupied by a coach, let alone the coach of the second- ranked team in the country. It looks more like that of a props manager at Disneyland. There’s the life-sized pirate, looking as sinister as any of Leach’s linebackers.

There’s the pirate statuette ready to cut you off at your knees as you walk in.

When you finally sit across from Leach at his desk, you’re staring at a skull-and-crossbones banner reading, “The Beatings Will Continue Until Morale Improves.” Behind him, on a shelf, there’s a replica of an 18th-century rum decanter — empty — with two shot glasses.

I attended tech in 1988 and back then various student organizations designed and sold t-shirts for every game. I wouldn't be surprised if that is something they still regularly do. I wouldn't call it "aggie" at all though.
