A deal is in the works to reopen the Cherokee Casino Resort as Hard Rock Casino Tulsa, the Cherokee Nation announced Friday morning.

The tribe has entered into a license agreement with Hard Rock Hotel Holdings to make the casino the first Hard Rock-branded property in the region. The agreement is pending review of the National Indian Gaming Commission.

The casino, 777 W. Cherokee St. in Catoosa, is undergoing a $155 million expansion. The new gaming floor is set to open in December, and the newly branded hotel will welcome its first guests in spring 2009.

According to a news release, the new property will bring the Hard Rock experience to Oklahoma with influences from Cherokee heritage, the state's history of musical artists and a blend of the property's current and future amenities and entertainment.

"Being part of the Hard Rock brand, combined with our current expansion, will set us apart from any other entertainment option in the region," said David Stewart, CEO of Cherokee Nation Enterprises.

The tribe will retain full ownership and management of the casino.

"The Hard Rock brand is another tool that we are using to create a diversified, growing economy in northeastern Oklahoma," said Chad Smith, principal chief of the Cherokee Nation.

The new resort will include the traditional Hard Rock décor, memorabilia and merchandise. It will also feature a 19-story tower; more than 350 guest rooms; a 110,000 square foot casino; indoor and outdoor pools; 30,000 square feet of convention space; a 2,500-seat theater for concerts and sporting events; restaurants and cocktail lounges.

BULLL****!!!

No really - that's seriously who they think their competition is. Not other entertainment areas in Tulsa. Not Bricktown or anything else in OKC. Not the casinos in KC. Vegas.

This is actually something that would allow them to complete even more with NOT Vegas, but the rest of Oklahoma, which has most casinos per capita than... well, Vegas.

(probably not really, but I've heard that we have way too many casinos here)

This sets them apart from every single other entertainment venue in Oklahoma. There isn't a Hard Rock Cafe anywhere in Oklahoma yet.

Soooo... who else wants a t-shirt? :D

Hard Rock Hotel Holdings is owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Interesting venture for the Cherokees.

I would be remiss as a Tulsan if I did not have a Hard Rock: Tulsa shirt.

Hopefully if you gamble there you can get the otherwise over-priced bad food for really cheap.

Hard Rock Casino & Hotel is also being built next to Kansas Speedway with Phase 1 completed by Oct '09 so they won't be the only one in the region for long.

Unless they are only talking about Oklahoma as the "region" :D

It's hard times in Vegas baby. Lots of developers have lost their shirts. I know one mega-church there that has laid off 30 employees.

Tulsa might get to host some good fights out of that since they would probably get access to Seminole Warriors Promotions as part of the deal. They promote some pretty entertaining fighters.

Funny how everyone talks about how bad the economy sucks, yet Casinos are popping up everywhere and there are no shortage of people that go there on a nightly basis

Casinos traditionally do well in hard economic times. The total drop is down, but the handle pulls are steady or increasing. Difference is the $1 machine player becomes the 25 cent machine player.

Hard times make people look for a way to make some quick cash and casinos offer that. Unfortunately they offer it to very few.

Will they lower their prices, because you can fly to Wendover, Nevada and back and stay in a deluxe resort for three nights for 159? To me it's worth it just to get away. They were priced at 99 last spring. Oh and the jacuzzi suites are AWESOME!
