Since the BCS title game is most likely going to be SEC vs Big XII...I will do the SEC as well....probably should have did this on one thread but oh well.

Weezyanna State= 2003

Arkansas= 1977 (SWC), 2006 (SEC)

Auburn= 1983 (royally screwed out of the national title)

Vanderbilt= 1982

Rocky Top= 1998

Mississippi= 1960

Mississippi State= 1998

Florida= Potentially this one but for now 2006

Georgia= 2007

Kentucky= 1950

South Carolina= 1984

Alabama= 1979

I say Alabama MNC #'s 2, 17, 23, & 47 were better than that 1979 team.

Since the BCS title game is most likely going to be SEC vs Big XII...I will do the SEC as well....probably should have did this on one thread but oh well.

Weezyanna State= 2003

Arkansas= 1964 National Champions (SWC), 2006 (SEC)

Auburn= 1983 (royally screwed out of the national title) (though the 1994 probation team (12-0), and the 2004 "People's Champion" team (13-0) weren't too bad either.)

Vanderbilt= 1982

Rocky Top= 1939 (Undefeated, untied, unscored upon.)

Mississippi= 1960

Mississippi State= 1998

Florida= Potentially this one but for now 2006 (I'd put 1996, with their one avenged loss to FSU, over 2006 - the '06 team overachieved, and had one blemish at Auburn.)

Georgia= 1980 - Herschel Walker. 12-0.

Kentucky= 1950

South Carolina= 1984 (note: this was pre-SEC. They joined with Arkansas in 1992. They really haven't had much to crow about since (no pun intended.)

Alabama= 1979

Fixed again. ;)

Would agree with UGA in 1980 instead of anything they have had recently.

2002-03 Georgia

Hard to argue with those

In my limited SEC knowledge (I'm more of a Big 10/Big 12 watcher)... hell, I'll just go with the past decade or so, because I don't care about before then....

LSU: 2003
Ark: 2006
Auburn: 2004
Vandy: 2008 (until October)
Tenn: 2001
Ole Miss: 2003 (Eli loses to Jason year)
Croom: 2007
Florida: 2006
Georgia: 2007
Kentucky: 2007
South Carolina: 2007 (until October)
Bammer: 2002 (too bad you were on probation, but thanks for the BCS points!)

I dunno, man. I'm really not that fond of many of their schools, nor am I all "ooo, look at the shiny conference with all their NFL talent and rabid fans!" or whatever. You might have a better response with some of the recent BCS-bound teams, or recent title teams, perhaps?

Umm you do realize that SEC schools get better every year, because the SEC doesn't reload. The Correct answer to this question would be 2008...all of them. The worst team in the SEC would roll OU, uSc, Tech, or anyone else by at least 6 touchdowns. Now if you combined OU and uSc, we could get within at least 3 touchdowns of Arkansas

I have co-workers who graduated from UT-Knoxville. Trust me. I hear about the 1939 team at least once a season... then they shut up about, oh, mid-September. :)

The Bama team of 1961 was definitely better and more dominating than our 79 team. We gave up only 25 pts ALL SEASON en route to an 11-0 finish and Bryant's first NC.

Well I am not gonna look solely at records and poll finishes. Instead, I am also going to look at talent (and wasted talent as well) to make these observations:

LSU = 2003

The funny thing about LSU is that most of its success has been more recent. If you throw out the 1958-1959 and 1970 teams, they haven't done much before 1981. The 1958 Tigers come closest but they weren't an exceptionally talented team outside of Billy Cannon. The 1981 and 2007 teams were nearly equal in talent but both blew it in big games although the latter still won the title. I also like the resourcefulness of the 1988 team but they too came up short at the end of the year. In the end, the 2003 team that beat OU for a 12-1 finish is the most complete they have had.

Arkansas= 1964

It's hard to argue perfection, especially with a team that included Jimmy Johnson, Barry Switzer and Jerry Jones but this is considered the best Hogs team. In my opinion you could make a case for the 1977 team. Can you believe Lou Holtz coached the? With the exception of a 13-9 loss to Texas, the Hogs were perfect behind Ron Calcagni, Ben Cowins and Michael Forrest yet it was a freshman TB, Roland Sales, who propelled them to a stunning 31-6 upset over Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. The Hogs finished third in the polls in 1977. The closest they have been before or since are the 1965, 1969 and 1979 teams.

Auburn= 2004

I feel there were several Auburn teams just as talented (1993, 1983 and 1985 come to mind). I chose this team because they were the most complete team in Tiger history. They had the strongest overall backfield too, with Randy Campbell, Cadillac Williams and Ronnie Brown. They also had a strout defense. The 1983 and 1985 teams had Bo Jackson to build around and the 1993 team would have won it here but they were on probation. For those who cry about the 1983 team getting screwed over, do you really think they would have beaten Miami or Nebraska that year? I don't think so.

Vanderbilt= 1982

Wow this is an easy choice since they have been bad for so long. only three winning records all time. This team finished 8-4 and sported one decent player in QB Whit Taylor. Need I say more?

Tennessee= 1998

The long and illustrious history of the Vols can be encapsulated in blown opportunities and underachieving teams. Several Bob Neyland teams won fictional titles and lost bowl games thereafter. The 1998 team didn't have the most talent, they just had the most resourcefulness behind Tee Martin. The 1995 team finished 11-1 behind Peyton Manning but didn't even win the SEC due to a loss to Florida. The 1939 Neyland team gets a lot of press for holding their opponents scoreless throughout the regular season but they still lost their bowl game, which brings into question their true greatness. So did the 1940 and 1951 teams. I'd look closer at the 1938 team, which was the only other that finished undefeated for a full season.

Mississippi= 1962

The John Vaught and Bobby Crespino-led Rebels forged a perfect finish in 1962 and capped it with a win over Arkansas, the closest they have come to an NCAA title. The only other times they have challeneged before or since are 1960 and 1969 (remember Archie Manning?).

Mississippi State= 1981

The John Bond led Bulldogs had their greatest collection of talent and finished 10-2 with a loss to Nebraska in the Sun Bowl. There hasn't been a team with more talent than this in Starkville, including the 1998 team.

Florida= 2006

This was another tough choice. The 1984 and 1996 teams were super as well but neither had BOTH a great running and great passing QB ala Tim Tebow and Chris Leak. A lot of people overlook the 10-1 finish by Florida in 1984 because they were on probation. The 1996 team avenged a regular season-ending loss to the Seminoles thanks to Danny Wuerffel and a strong supporting cast. But neither of those teams had the defense that the Gators brought in 2006, although the team defense of the 1996 Florida squad had its moments.

Georgia= 1980

This is a toss-up between three years, 1980, 1976 and 1983. Sure they 1982 team had the most talent but they blew it in crunch time. I'll go with 1980 because of the impressive debut by Herschel Walker against Tennessee, the magical Lindsay Scott finish against Florida and the Buck Belue-led title triumph over Notre Dame. Mark Richt has brought respectability back to the Dawgs but their recent teams aren't in the league of the ones mentioned above.

Kentucky= 1950

This was the year UK was slapped with sanctions for the basketball team but their football team was outstanding. I still kinda like the Art-Still led 1976 team that finished 10-1 but they kinda came out of nowhere and still finished behind Georgia in the league.

South Carolina= 1984

No question about this one. With Allen Mitchell and Todd Hold throwing to Ira Hillary and Sterling Sharpe, they forged a 10-2 finish, with losses to Navy and Oklahoma State to finish an otherwise great season. I even got to hang out on the sidelines with the Georgia team when they lost to SC 17-10 early in the season. When you look at talent, this years Gamecock team is loaded on defense but only the 1980 George Rogers-led 8-4 team comes close otherwise.

Alabama= 1978

For all the 1979 fans out there, you must either not know about this team or you have a short memory. This team was infinitely more talented than the 1979 team and, even though they lost to USC at home in the regular season, they still won the title behind Jeff Rutledge, Barry Krause, Major Ogilvie and Dwight Stephenson. All the 1979 team had for talent was a resourceful QB named Steadman Shealy, a young O-line and a veteran tailback in Ogilvie. I even give the 1992 team a little props but the 1961, 1963 and 1974 teams were all more talented than that team. The Tide has such a great tradition, that this was probally the toughest choice of all.

I'm kinda biased towards Bama's 1992 team, but only because they were awesome.

Florida had a pretty good team in 1996, too, with a scrappy defensive coordinator who combined with a s-s-sick offense to win it all.

As for the other schools...

LSU 2003 is fair. Georgia 1980 is fair. I'd say Arkansas 1979, and Auburn 1993, I believe it was. As for Tennessee, they were better in 1997, but they won it all in 1998, so it kinda depends on how you want to qualify things... I liked 'em in 1998, 'cause [Dennis Green] YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME! Uga in 2002 was definitely better than in 2007, but they didn't sniff the BCS game thanks to an undefeated Miami and tOSU who lucked themselves into the championship.
