View Full Version : Venables interviewed for Clemson

Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables interviewed for the Clemson head coaching job Tuesday night in Oklahoma, sources said.

Initially, it was believed that Clemson officials flew to Oklahoma City to meet with Sooners offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson, who had played at North Carolina and would appear to have more ties to the Atlantic Coast Conference.

However, sources said that Clemson athletics director Terry Don Phillips met with the 37-year-old Venables sometime Tuesday evening.

"They have a job to do, I have a job to do," Clemson interim coach Dabo Swinney, who replaced Tommy Bowden last month, said Wednesday. "My job is to get this team ready to play Duke this weekend and try to go get some wins and take advantage of the opportunity I have to lead this program right now.

"That's really my only concern and the only thing I can control. All those other things are things that are out of my control, so I don't worry about that stuff at all."

Venables declined comment Wednesday morning, citing Oklahoma's long-standing policy not to discuss job-related matters.

The fifth-ranked Sooners (9-1), who are off this week, play host to No. 2 Texas Tech (10-0) on Nov. 22. A win for Tech would likely clinch the Big 12 South title.

Even though the Sooners' defense has struggled this season -- OU is ranked 51st in FBS in total defense and tied for 56th in scoring defense -- Venables has been considered a rising star in the business the past few years. Those who have worked with him say the Kansas native is sharp, energetic and charismatic and known as an excellent recruiter with a keen eye for talent.

In 2006, Venables was a finalist for the Broyles Award as the nation's top assistant coach. He came to Norman in 1999 and was named a co-defensive coordinator at 28. In 2004, he was promoted to associate head coach.

Venables was a linebacker at Kansas State and named honorable mention all-Big Eight in 1992. With his alma mater having a coaching vacancy of its own, the Salina, Kan., native is thought to be a candidate for that job as well.

Bruce Feldman covers college football for ESPN The Magazine and ESPN.com. Heather Dinich, who covers the ACC for ESPN.com, contributed to this report.

I've thought for a long time that Brent was going to sit tight until Bob decides to hang'em up...then he'll put his name in the hat for the head coaching position.

My only question is if Brent leaves then who take the D in the future. I think if he was to leave now then that might be Bob, but does anybody see anyone of the defensive coaches that could actually be the long term answer. I don't because I figure if we had great defensive minds then they would be DC's somewhere else by now.

Well, I'm young and realistic enough to realize that Venables is a dang good defensive coordinator.

You gotta figure that Bob Stoops has his hand in that defense as well. You know, since he was pretty much the best d coordinator in the nation coming out of UF and all.

Just let the men that get paid cash money to run our defense do their job. It's not like OU's been a team in the pits over the past decade. We've only been one of the best teams, year in year out.

As much as I like to complain about BV and our wonderful bend but don't break zone, he's much too valuable to lose because of his great recruiting. Same with Shipp, if he leaves as well.

BV is a good recruiter, but are kids coming here because of him, or are they coming to OU? If he leaves (as I cross my fingers) he'll be replaced with someone that can recruit as well.

I am just thankful we don't have a dumbass Athletic Director like Clemson, K-State, and all these other schools interviewing Venables. I mean all those guys have to do is come to Soonerfans.com to realize that Venables is the ****tiest coach in the history of defense. Do you realize that there has been 10 coaches that over the last 10 years that coached the #1 ranked defense..not a one is named Venables!! You know what pisses me off at Venables most of all is how he has to create schemes for 8 or 9 offenses unlike Switzer's boys who had to create schemes for 1 or 2 offenses(P.S. Switzer's boys got their *** beat by every good passing QB who rolled upon them) and somehow Venables can't scheme as well despite having so much more variety of offenses.

You obviously don't know what good defense looks like. And when he makes Blake look like Vince Lombardi at one of these schools dumb enough to hire him perhaps you can come back and post about how great a coach he is then.

the worst thing that can happen during this season is a coaching change; regardless of what we all want or don't want ... if BV leaves, our season is over since our kids will be either leaderless and/or severely distracted;

we learned this truth the hard way ... when bro' Mike left; i really really hope (if he leaves) that nothing is announced/done until after the season ... but i don't think my hope is realistic; gawd, this will kill our defense;

Yeah, and West Virginia learned that lesson last year, didn't they?
I hesitate to blame coaches leaving as the reason we can't win a bowl game.
I think it is focus. We have the same issues when we don't lose any coaches. Even Granger's deal was blamed last year. That should not affect a great team in the biggest game of their year.

Maybe the biggest game of the year for the fans. There were enough injuries last year the team was not at full strength. But on top of that, it really didn't seem like all the players wanted to be there. I speculate that they thought they deserved the title game slot as much as LSU and the Fiesta was a big let down. For what ever reason, the focus and intensity was no where near the CCG.

Just ask Texas fans about BJW. He was their DC for a bit and he coached secondary I believe.

While I was hard on Brents suckage I have realized he is a good coach and its the scheme more than anything.

Why can't BJW get a gig somewhere else and lets bring in another Secondary coach.

BJW was hired in 99 to recruit Texas. That was his function on the staff. anything else is kind of an afterthought. I do think it was a mistake to make him DB's coach since he was going to catch a lot of flak from fans there.

If that does happen, I wish him luck. I also hope if this does happen, that he will pack his stuff and joing his new team ASAP. We do not need a coach hanging around til the end of the season, knowing he will not be with us at the end.
