By TODD WILLS / The Dallas Morning News

What he did: Covey was one of five district champions as Coppell beat defending state champ Highland Park for the District 16 title. Covey had a bye into the finals of the 171-pound weight class before defeating Highland Park's Teddy Gambordella, 7-1.
[Spencer Covey]
Spencer Covey

The stats: Covey, a junior, is 40-0 this season with 20 pins. He said he is more likely to win matches because of scoring points than by getting pins.

Who is he? Covey, a member of SportsDay's All-Area team last year, was a fifth-place finisher at the UIL state meet in 2005.

He said it: "I can lead by example in my matches. I make matches exciting because I'm more of an aggressor instead of trying to hold back and defending."

Coach said it: "He's had an incredible year so far. The team is very important to him. He has won matches that have made our team step up and be better just by watching him wrestle." ? Carl Stralow

Did you know? Covey was an all-district kicker last fall for the Coppell football team. He had 47 kickoffs for touchbacks. He wants to kick in college and will attend several camps this summer. Covey also starts at free safety and played tailback behind Southern Cal-bound Emmanuel Moody.

I don't think he's been given the starting job yet. Just being given a shot.

hmmm two GREAT kickers from OKC (much better than Stevens), both passed up by OU.

Im not ready to give up on Stevens yet, he has been terribly inconsistent but the kid has alot of talent. Remember Hartley missing all of those extra points last yr or the yr before, remember that Oregon st kicker who missed like 5 fgs against lsu a few yrs ago and went on to win the Groza...I say give him a chance (I will still be very nervous when a big FG comes up though)

Hartley kicked it out of the endzone most of the time. That is hurting us more than a few missed extra points and 50/50 on field goals. I don't care who they let kick extra points and field goals. Just get a leg that can kick it deep.

What's Todd Thompsen doing right now? That dude was the unsung hero of the 85 team with all the kickoffs out of the end zone

"Mr. Powerfoot" is the State Representative for District 25.

Best player to come out of Sapulpa, IMO.

Stevens says he is going to see a Sports Psychologist - Says he kills it in practice but trys to do stuff different in games...

All we need is a head case at Kicker - We need clutch people not head cases..

Anyhow- the team should get him real drunk pat him on the back and say kick it like in practice or your done... simple as that...

well, there has been precedent under Stoops to pull a shirt late in the yr...

Is Tress Way just not all that?

The other day during the A&M game I'd switch channels so as not to watch the KO, been doing that for awhile now.

Hartley was also 5 yards closer to the endzone than our kicker is now due to the rule change. It seems like I am the only person on this board aware of this fact..... :pop:

And if Stoops hadn't done that, Hartley would be a senior this year.
And there's a good chance we'd still be undefeated.

No we wouldnt be.

But thanks for putting it on the kicker.

Kickers....
1. Kick the ball high and as deep as possible.
2. Play safety on coverage.

Coverage teams...
1. Cover kick by staying in assigned lanes.
2. Bust throw the wall.
3. TACKLE.

Oh, and 1 KO return = 6 points, not 10 points.

It was a little thing called momentum, our D was playing great, we just drove the field and went up 14-3 and then Shipleys KO return took the air out of the sails. Not sure if we would have won but that was a huge play in us losing

MojoRisen

That play hurt the hell out of us! We were getting ready to play some D with high emotions smelling blood... 21-3 would have had the horns reeling... and we may have got a turn over...

Even UT players were quoted as saying that the KO return was big because they were hanging their heads on the sideline

It's a fact that Stevens has smoked his kicks since Cordero got in his grill.

We'll find out next weekend if the "grilling" was cause or coincidence.

If it is causative, Cordero has earned his scholarship.

Actually hartely had to kick from the 30 yard line just like they do now, last year was the first year of the rule change.

First - Moreland handles kick-offs, not Stevens. Please direct comments of incompetency to the correct incompetent individual. ;)

Second - ALL kickers are head cases so seeing a psychologist is actually a good sign.

All I want is a kicker that can put it deep into the endzone. This is freakin' Oklahoma. Surely we can find a competent kicker
