OKLAHOMA CITY -- Republicans on Tuesday appeared to have gained control of the Oklahoma Senate for the first time in history.

Republican Dan Newberry defeated incumbent Sen. Nancy Riley, D-Sand Springs, for Senate District 37.

Republican James Halligan beat Democrat Robert Murphy Jr. for Senate District 21. That seat had been held by Senate Pro Tem Mike Morgan, D-Stillwter, who could not run again due to term limits.

Last session, the Senate was tied with 24 Democrats and 24 Republicans.
