View Full Version : How long did you wait to vote?

My precinct is at I-235 and NE 48th (approx) in OKC. Got there at 645 AM and waited 15 min for them to open and about 10 minutes to vote after that. Despite being there so early, I was still almost the 20th person in line!

I really anticipated a longer wait. I brought my iPod and intended to stand in line awhile.

There just wasn't that many there when I went. There were eight voting spots in the Oklahoma-brand cardboard cutout voting booths, but after that, there was a young black lady that was told she was registered in Owasso (she wasn't too happy about that), a few other young black early 20s people in front of me, and an older white guy in his 80s or so with his toy-sized dog (wow, a really yappy one, too!). As I was leaving, there were more older people coming up (one with a walker, another that had trouble walking up to the door) that were ready to vote.

So really, a very diverse crowd out to vote today at my poll. I don't think there will be a huge line there at any point, but it's good to see such a turnout. I remember back in 2006 voting early - no wait at all in Cleveland County. I know its a prez year for voting, but still - it's a huge, huge turnout from the looks of it. Hope it breaks some records. It's time to stop being so apathetic.

I'll even reveal how I voted:
All Repub on the candidates...except for State Representative. I'll be damned if I vote for that chicken**** Aaron Stiles...and I sure as **** wasn't voting for Wallace Collins...so I left that one blank.
All no on keeping the judges...just because (like they're going to get voted out...then again, when was the last time a judge was voted out?)
All yes on the four State Questions...with a **** YAH! on the first one.

There was no wait at the church around the corner from my house.
At the courthouse I had to wait about 10 minutes.
Down at the public library the wait was a little longer cause there were too many Johnsons.
Over at the secondary school in the heights the wait was about 1 hour. That was the worse.
I didn't have to wait at all on my early voting since I just dropped that off.
All in all a pretty good voting experience and I am glad my vote counted. :D

District and Associate District Judges are an entirely different matter. Usually the local population knows if they are up to no good, especially in the tight-knit smaller communitites. What SSC and I are talking about are the Appellate Judges who don't draw opponents and are on the "Retention" Ballot.

I think my wait was mostly because I went early, right after 7. Usually I'm a lunchtime voter. In my precinct you're nearly certainly either an old, rich, white Republican or an activist Democrat. Except for my one little sliver of the precinct, which allows me to live there as a poor, white trash Republican. I think the activist Democrats are all going to make it for this election, and probably showed up early. And the old, rich, white Republicans showed up early because they never miss a vote and, well, they're old.

The Republican party called me in the afternoon to remind me to vote for McCain. I told them I had already been to the polls, and had done so. She asked how long the wait was, and seemed really interested when I told her (45+ minutes). Asked which precinct. Not sure where they would be going with that type of info.

Then, I made the mistake of volunteering that I had voted nearly straight ticket, save one in-state race where I had voted for a Democrat I think highly of and against a Republican that I don't. Didn't specify which race, but I'll probably be on some party disloyalty list now.

The trick is to always vote to retain when a Democratic governor is in office, and always vote to remove when a Republican governor is in office.
