Daylight Savings Time (http://www.redcross.org/article/0,1072,0_312_8350,00.html)

Spring ahead...fall back.

Friday, October 31, 2008 — Daylight Savings Time is coming to an end on November 2. The good news story is that most Americans nationwide will enjoy an extra hour this Sunday. Catching up on sleep will be welcomed by many.Earlier sunsets, longer evenings, and colder weather signifies that fall has unquestionably arrived and winter is just around the corner.

Did you know that this year marks the conclusion of the longest Daylight Savings period in American history?

If it seems like we're a little later than usual in setting back the clocks, you're right. Daylight Saving Time was extended by an entire month this year as a result of the Energy Policy Act, enacted in 2005.

Interestingly, Hawaii, most of Arizona, and parts of Indiana will not be setting their clocks back an hour like the rest of the country.

Even if you are in the parts of the country that do not turn back the clock, this is also a great time to perform important tasks around the house, including:

Resetting automatic lights and sprinklers to standard time operation.
Checking fire extinguishers and testing smoke detectors.
Restocking first-aid kits and emergency supplies.
Changing important passwords and personal identification numbers (PINs).
Rotating tires and inspecting the spare.
Something you might not have considered is how Daylight Savings could affect your health.

In a letter published in today's New England Journal of Medicine, findings of a new Swedish study suggest that setting your clocks back in the fall might protect your heart. On the other hand, losing an hour of sleep in the spring might be risky for the heart.

"There's a small increase in risk for the individual, especially during the first three days of the new week," says Dr Imre Janszky, one of the researchers behind the study. "The disruption in the chronobiological rhythms, the loss of one hour's sleep and the resulting sleep disturbance are the probable causes."

Morale of the story- enjoy your extra hour gift this Sunday, use it as an opportunity to prepare your house and even take a little time to reflect upon your personal well-being.

This will make watching the OU/NU replay at 3:00 AM better. In some weird way.
